Cryptography and Network Security

Rate this book

Cryptography and Network Security: Principles and Practice is an extremely practical book that provides in depth information on various topics governing network security, as well as cryptography. The book deals with the importance of security in times of electronic connectivity on a global scale. This security is particularly critical due to prevalence of hackers and viruses, electronic fraud, electronic eavesdropping, etc. Along with in-depth information the book also explores the practical applications of cryptography as well as network security.

The book is conveniently divided into parts, and this allows users to easily focus on the broad subject areas with each chapter further detailing into the intricacies of the subject matter. The book also includes an extremely useful recap section of the key terms along with review questions that help in testing the comprehension as well as understanding of the users.

The first part of the book provides a logical introduction to the subject areas of cryptography as well as network security. The reader also gets an understanding of the features as well as capabilities of cryptography and network security. In the second part users get to understand the implementations of the technologies in the real world. On the whole, the book is divided into seven sections, and they deal with aspects such as symmetric as well as asymmetric ciphers, mutual trust, cryptographic algorithms, system security, internet security and legal, as well as ethical aspects related to security implementations.

The book has been written by William Stallings, a subject matter expert with experience in excess of 30 years within the fields of computer as well as network security. Some of the other books written by the author include Computer Organisation and Architecture: Designing for Performance and Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles. You can shop online for the paperback edition of the book published by Pearson Education with ISBN-10: 8131761665 and ISBN-13: 978-8131761663.

The edition I had was probably a bit out of date but it was readable and fairly clearly explained, although there were some parts where it seemed like the author was just rehashing the relevant RFC/standard. This is good for people who know nothing liek me as a sort of overview, but if u are looking for theoretical details or at the other end of the spectrum, practical implementation details, better find a different book.

EDIT: please note a lot of stuff in this book e.g. the PGP email stuff is out of date and not secure, has problems

This isn't one of the harder books on the topic, but sometimes that can be a good thing. This is one of the better intro type books I've read. Definitely recommended.

It was great to have it from my friend , and you know it's a study book for that I rated it with 3 , but really I didn't read the whole book , and still I didn't like the way its information presented to the students :( , it was really black , and no more hash explanation that I personally like to see in IT Books. even that I like Cryptography so much , but this book wasn't something which will make you love it .

I gives you the principles of cryptography, although some believes it's a good start, I think you need to be an expert or someone with IT background to get the benefit you expect. Great book to add to your library, very detailed and concepts are well explained.

Not the easiest book to read or study. Fairly dated in this edition, still valuable as starting point.
