John grew up on the plains of rural Iowa as part of a good, but unbelieving family. After he, his sister, and his father nearly died in an asphyxiation accident, his mother began seeking God. A few years later John's sister came to personal faith in Christ through the witness of friends. She in turn led John to faith in Christ while he was in junior high school. Later, as a young adult, John sensed God’s call to ministry and began training for His service.

John studied at Crown College (Saint Bonifacius, MN), earning a BA in Bible and Theology and then at Columbia Biblical Seminary (Columbia, SC), receiving the MDiv.

From 1987 to 2001 John served as the senior pastor of the Plymouth Alliance Church (Plymouth, Wisconsin). During that time John earned the DMin from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

From 2001 to 2020 he served as the senior pastor of the Stow Alliance Fellowship (Stow, Ohio).

Since 2020 John and his wife have served an international church in the Middle East.

By God's grace John has taught God’s Word beyond the local church, in countries around the world and in the United States in conferences, camps, seminars and on college campuses.

Life as Worship has become one of my favorite reads this year. Dr Kitchen takes the reader on a expositional journey of the Psalms of Asaph. His scholarship is superior as is normally the case in his writing. What sets This book apart is the practical application to everyday life. No matter where you are in your spiritual journey this book is a must read. I will be using it in my discipleship process when I talk about worship with an individual I am discipling. This book can also be used as a sermon prep resource on any series on worship. Thank you John for lifting my soul.

From the moment one begins reading "Life as Worship" and throughout the journey that follows, John Kitchen continually points the reader in the same direction along the path of God's goodness, faithfulness, and mercy. Pastor Kitchen exhorts us to take a deep look inside ourselves, not from a self-perspective but from God's perspective of coming to "the place of worship" that God calls us to come to – His place, a stature of worship. The depth of worship described in the pages of this book goes beyond just a good read, a suggestion, a method. As a matter of fact it is not that at all. It grips a heart on the edge of turning to stone or even one that has turned to stone and allows the Holy Spirit to uncover layer by layer areas that one may have left unturned. Not even so much because of the words of the book; while the writing, the teaching, the history, and the balance of self-divulging stories are magnificently shared by Dr. Kitchen; but because of how once again the Holy Spirit has used his vessel to unpack and dissect His scripture to grip our hearts and bring us to yearn for an entirely new perspective on worship. This would be a great book to use for individual study or small group Bible study.
