I wish I'd known about this book years ago. Obviously written for use in schools (with accompanying discussion questions and vocab lists), this straightforward account of African American experiences in Florida fills in a lot of gaps in my education. Now definitely also on the hunt to see some of Augusta Savage's sculptures in person!

This is a great format for introducing the reader to many notable people in Florida:
Good to get the background on Jonathan C Gibbs, for whom Gibbs High School is named
Now I am looking forward to Marilyn Nelson's book on Augusta Savage, Sculptor
Who knew Howard Thurman was from Florida?
Also, this book points out how difficult the struggles were for many, and lest we think the past is over - how RECENT.

I really liked the explanation of the painting that is on the cover, The Gulf Stream, by Winslow Homer

Thanks to Maxine Jones for her work. I would love to read a sequel highlighting people since the 1993 publication.
