Paul, expat writer and cofounder with Eugene Jolas of
"transition" (the biggest little magazine), left Paris in the
early 30s and tried to figure out his life in the tranquil
town of St Eulalia on Ibiza. "Here at last is peace. I have
attained a zone of contemplation where the voices of land
and sea say, You may rest."

He didn't have a dime, but soon married a divorced heiress,
the third of five wives. The locals -- fishermen and farmers,
landowners and shopkeepers -- were tolerant, unassuming people

I don't know that many people will find this book interesting any more, as it is based on the Spanish Revolution. I feel that it is important given how near we may be to war.

It can be tough to read because of the number of names and places that Paul lists, but he is trying to detail the entire life and death of the Spanish town. You could say the story only "gets good" near the middle but the point of the book is not to tell you the story. Rather, the point is to make you feel the life of the
