Itulah pertanyaan kunci dalam buku ini. Karya-karya sastra yang dikritisi adalah A Tale of Two Cities yang memasukkan unsur-unsur Revolusi Prancis, War and Peace menegdapankan bagaimana Napoleon menginvansi Rusia, dan Gone with the Wind yang mengisahkan apa dampak dari Perang Sipil.

David Thelen pernah menulis dalam Journal of American History pada 1989, “by connecting history with its origins in the narrative form of everyday communication, attention to memory transcends specialization by speaking the language of face-to-face asociation and firsthand experience”; melalui suatu karya historis, pelaku karya dapat menuangkan gagasannya dalam bentuk naratif dengan bahasa sehar-hari dan dengan demikian penikmat karya seolah-olah dapat memiliki pengalaman yang serupa dengan pelaku sejarah di masa silam.

Dalam Chapter 1, Cullen menuangkan gagasan “The Past Keeps Changing”—masa lalu selalu berubah (dapat diartikan sebagai perspektif tiap zaman yang terus berubah). Bab Konklusi sendiri lebih ditujukan sebagai kritik mengenai ke mana arah “seni bersejarah” digunakan. Bahwa sejatinya dalam karya-karya seni sekalipun (entah fiksi/non-fiksi), tidak semestinya ada penyelewengan terhadap kejadian-kejadian yang benar terjadi di masa silam.

Shelby Foote called the Civil War “The crossroads of our being” as Americans. In A Reusable Past, Jim Cullen writes that “officially, the Civil War ended in 1865, but culturally, it was just beginning.” The war’s meaning was at stake; if history can be said to be written by the victor, outside observers might find it hard to understand that the South lost the war.
