Dit boek geeft een overzicht van drie millennia architectuur, alhoewel dat dan vooral een westers verhaal is (Europa en Noord-Amerika), en de wortels van die architectuur in de oude beschavingen van Egypte, Griekenland en Rome.
Er is enkel een zijstapje naar de islamitische architectuur, maar verder geen woord over Aziatische, Latijns-Amerikaanse, Afrikaanse, origineel inheemse en koloniale architectuur.

In het begin van het boek is er een tijdslijn met de verschillende kunstperiodes, die ook als inhoudstafel dient, en achteraan vinden we een begrippenlijst waarin bouwkundige termen goed worden uitgelegd, en een architectenregister, waarin men zeer sdumier over het leven van de betreffende architect kan lezen.

De tekst is vrij droog, en is bedoeld voor architecten of studenten architectuur. Er zijn wel foto’s die het geheel illustreren, maar voor een leek is de tekst te technisch, zijn er iets te weinig foto’s en ontbreken er luchtigere verhalen en weetjes. Vandaar dan ook mijn drie-sterren-beoordeling.

A bit opinionated at the end, bashing post-modern architecture in general, but maybe not without reason. Otherwise a thorough and learned walkthrough of architectural history that leaves little to wish for. Being extremely concise by nature, it would maybe benefit from a section at the end listing other notable buildings from each epoque in a compact format. Also, it ends in 1995, so maybe it's time for a revised edition.

Contains a lot of the authors own opinions and somewhat strangely veiled political commentary. Very eurocentric and brushes off almost all other styles except french and german church architecture. You'll probably be better off reading something else.
