A Beautiful Keepsake for Every Family~
I must confess I am shedding some tears even as I write this review of The Reading Promise, and in a good way. As a mother I can tell you this book is the perfect ‘keepsake’ read for every family that can be handed down for generations. As a teacher, it is the perfect ‘read to’, only if the teacher has a handful of tissues nearby. This poignant story is of Katherine, a young mother who is struggling to get by with raising a new baby. Unable to purchase new t

“The Reading Promise” should be in every parent’s hands! If every parent read to their children each night, many of our literacy problems would be overcome in only a few short years. The book is beautifully illustrated with soft pastels and contains a page for the parents to record their promise. My only criticism is that the story is for adults, not for children. The book’s purpose is to encourage parents to read. It is not a bedtime story for children. Buy this book as a baby shower present fo ...more

This charming and beautifully illustrated book is ideal for young parents of young children. Its audience is not children directly, though it is written in simple style. Rather, it is a book to be read aloud to a child being introduced to narrative books but not yet a reader. It is a gentle encouragement to parents to make reading to their children a habit and, as the title implies, a promise to be kept. It would be ideal for a summer reading program in which parents or caregivers help pre-schoo ...more

The Reading Promise is a lovely award-winning book by teacher/author Troy Kent, who teaches the value of reading to children in a wonderful way. It’s a story of a young mother, without much money, who discovers that she can give her young son a gift of love and closeness by promising …”I’ll read to you every night and end with a kiss.” As the boy grows, and begins to love to read on his own, she honors her promise by continuing to give him a kiss after he reads to himself at night, tiptoeing int ...more

Beautifully illustrated and crafted! The Reading Promise is a wonderfully illustrated, moving tale of the unique kinship between mother and child. This thoughtfully penned picture book tells a story of struggle and economic hardship, and a mother's devotion to providing her child with the greatest gift - knowledge. The Reading Promise also speaks to the important role that libraries play in contemporary society, during a time in which economic inequality reigns, in bridging the divide between th ...more

The Reading Promise is a very sweet story of a mother's love. This book tugs on your heartstrings and gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling that you get when you find your new favourite book. Troy Kent is a brilliant writer that went from Stinky Blinky, one of the most hilarious books ever written, to The Reading Promise, a heartwarming and truly lovely story. Troy Kent is this generation's Robert Munsch and I believe we are all waiting at the edge of our computer desk chairs to see what he will ...more

This book is absolutely fantastic. It was recommended to me through a girlfriend, and my hopes were set high due to the amount of awards it has won, but I wasn't let down! It is a very heart-warming story that emphasises how important reading is, but at the same time you don't need a lot of money to enjoy spending quality time with your children. This book has become an all-time favorite of mine, and I will cherish it forever. I believe it will become a classic, but I have to warn you - have a b ...more

I got this book through Goodreads First Reads. It was a sweet story, in which a mother with small means promises to read to her new baby every night. It is written through the mother’s thoughts and really not through or to a child. The book encourages parents to make reading to their children a habit and the tradition it can instill.
Although I enjoyed the overall concept of the book and the story, my children enjoyed having the book read to them and understood what the author was trying to conve

We follow the lives of Katherine and her son, Daniel. They have few possessions, but create a loving home for themselves as they fill their days with library books and excursions based on the books. Each night, Katherine recites a touching promise to her beloved child. As Daniel grows, becoming a parent himself, and Katherine ages, the roles reverse. The ending completes the circle in a most life-affirming and tender way.

I got this book through Goodreads First Reads. It was a sweet story, in which a mother who can't afford a huge amount of toys, etc., promises to read to her new baby every night. This really impacts her son...but I won't spoil the end for you! Read it yourself. I'd recommend it to new moms and anyone with small children or who just likes a cute story.

This is a truly beautiful book. The story is touching and well written, and the artwork is just fantastic! I won this in a giveaway and had planned on giving it to my niece but after reading it with my girlfriend I just couldn't part with it! I'm going to read it to my niece but keep it for my own children in the future :) I'm so glad that I can add this to my bookshelf, its a real treasure.

I received this book free from Good Reads First Reads. It is a nice book with a great message to parents and their children. It is a little long for my daughter at this time, but she will be able to grow into it. I especially like the removable reading promise certificate in the back of the book.

One of those real gems that you read and just have to tell a friend about. I loved the theme to the story. So simple yet very powerful. I have to admit to crying at the end and my little boy asked me what was wrong!
