Burning the Grass: At the Heart of Change in South Africa, 1990-2011

In the great modern narrative nonfiction tradition of Ryszard Kapuściński, Burning the Grass is a literary masterpiece of true crime based on the April 2010 murder of Eugène Terre'Blanche, firebrand leader of the far-right AWB (Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging--the Afrikaner Resistance Movement), who espoused white Afrikaner rule even as it was ending in South Africa. It tells a universal story of small-town life where every face is familiar and people's immediate experience is hardly touched by national trends or ideologies. Jagielski intrudes on the intimate lives of the inhabitants to give us writing that jumps off the page for its immediacy, scope, and ambition. Never before has there been a book about South Africa like this.

A white Afrikaner runs the Blue Crane Tavern on the outskirts of Ventersdorp that caters to blacks, a failing enterprise that he clings to obstinately. A black African is a local politician from the township of Tshing who commutes to the Town Hall in the white town as an advisor to the local government, but who is never asked for his advice. Everyone knows Eugène Terre'Blanche--for his cruelty to the workers on his farm as much as for his leadership of the AWB. The Boardman family--outcasts for being of British descent in an Afrikaner world--are at the center of Jagielski's story, a family that is ostracized almost equally by their black and white neighbors.

Like Janet Malcolm in her true-crime narratives, or even Truman Capote in In Cold Blood, Jagielski uses death to enter into life, keeping our faces close enough to the pulse of it to let us smell the blood and know it as our own.

Author of a book Dobre miejsce do umierania (1994 - A good place to die), effect of few years of journeys to Caucas in time of fall of Soviet Empire and crating new independent countries. Published in 2002 Modlitwa o deszcz about Afganistan was nominated for NIKE Award 2003. It got Józef Tischner Award, Readers Award in Podporiusz 2003 and Amber Butterfly in Arkady Fiedler Competition. Wojciech Jagielski got also Dariusz Fikus Award for 2002.

Czytałem wcześniej "Wieże z kamienia" i "Modlitwę o deszcz" i chyba pierwszy raz Jagielski jest tak spójny. Nie zamęcza dziesiątkami miejsc i nazwisk. Skupia się na kilku bohaterach, którzy są uosobieniem skomplikowanych przemian, jakie dokonały się w RPA. Świetnie napisane i wbrew pozorom niejednoznaczne.

Literacko jedna z najlepszych, być może najlepsza książka Jagielskiego, ciekawa struktura, zmieniające się formy narracji.
Sama historia pozwala z bliska przyjrzeć się napięciom w Południowej Afryce, pozwala na próbę zrozumienia stron, opowiada też historie po których o porozumienie musiało być bardzo trudno.

Doskonale studium apartheid´u i ludzkiej natury.

"Jesli ktos na Terre´Blanche´a czekal, to raczej czarni. Moze wiec to im byl bardziej potrzebny niz bialym?
Biali potrzebowali go, by bral na siebie ich uprzedzenia, takze te najglebiej skrywane, usprawiedliwial je, zdejmowal z nich pietno wstydu i zla, uwalnial od poczucia winy i strachu przed osamotnieniem. Ale najwyrazniej potrzebowali go tez czarni(...) Kazdym swoim uczynkiem, kazdym slowem, a nawet samym istnieniem sluzyl im za rozgrzeszenie bledow, opeszalosci i zaniechan."

Uff... czegoś takiego potrzebowałem po tej dramatycznie złej książce o Tytusie-Chrystusie.
Kapitalni, z krwi i kości bohaterowie, bardzo ciekawa opowieść, na dokładkę mikro kurs z dziejów Południowej Afryki. Nie na miarę opowieści Brinka ale jest tu coś, co zdumiewa. Ani słowem Jagielski o tym nie wspomina, ale dzieje ćwierćwiecza wolności w Polsce, i w RPA są wręcz przerażająco podobne. Niemal tak, jak podobne były zbrodnicze systemy, które tyle lat zatruwały i niszczyły życia, ludzkie więzi i umysły. Znakomita książka.

Bardzo ciekawy opis historii relacji pomiędzy białymi i czarnymi mieszkańcami RPA. Książka pokazuje, że obie strony nie są bez winy, biali również byli okrutni w trakcie walki o "swoje". Mało optymistyczna wizja dalszej historii tamtej części świata. Warto przeczytać, żeby nabrać trochę dystansu i obiektywizmu.

Swierzutenka opowieść Jagielskiego o upadku aparthaidu z punktu widzenia mieszkańców małego burskiego miasteczka. Wspaniale sie czyta zaraz po podróży po RPA. Jagielski kolejnym razem dowodzi ze zaraz po Kapuścińskim jest mistrzem polskiego reportażu!
