"Isn't it terrible when love is not enough?"
In the action-packed sequel to Complicated Creatures: Part One…
Jack Roman was perfectly happy living the life of a high-powered and charismatic philistine. He had time, money, women and a penchant for the fast life. Until he met his match in Samantha Wyatt and his obsession with her would take him to hell and back…
Wes Elliott’s been dreaming of the muse he let go of as a young man—the woman he never forgot throughout his travels and the successes he’d left her to find. He always thought he’d see Sammy again—he just never expected her to be fighting for her life when he did…
Samantha Wyatt is being challenged by her past, tested by her decisions, and hunted by her nemesis. As her dangerous present and enigmatic past collides, Samantha conducts the riskiest operation of her life, and the men who love her will be forced to decide: Do they trust her enough to let her protect them? And do they love her enough to let her go?
*Update* I can't give this book 2 stars. It's unjust. I'm not kidding when I say the writing is beautiful. The only real problem I had with this book was Wes and the gone-to-hell relationship drama. I enjoyed everything else; the action, the suspense, and the dynamics between Samantha and her team & family (excluding Wes). So 3 stars it is - I liked it.
-
No. How could this happen? It's like my worst book fear came to life - an agonizing sequel to a 5-star book. I guess they call this the middle book syndrome? Ok, this wasn't that bad, in fact, the writing was still damn breathtaking. But the love triangle that developed? No fucking thanks. I was perfectly fine with Jack Roman. I initially contemplated on giving this 3 stars until So disappointed.
I loved it - great suspense story with many twist and turns, the romance got really complicated and thre was just one particular episode that I'm still not sure how I feel about.
It ends on a sort of cliffhanger and I already can't wait for the completion of Sam's story.
This was an emotional and action-packed sequel to Complicated Creatures: Part I (my review) which I thoroughly enjoyed. Its'w ritten in the same engaging style - detailed and well-researched with a lot of depth of feeling. We see even more character development and plot twists kept me on the edge and turning the pages impatiently.
While this books continues Sam and Jack's many additional characters also take center stage. Wes tries to find his way back to Sam and even though he is a good guy by all means and I was not happy about the love triangle that he fromed with Sam and Jack. There was a particular episode in the story which some might consider cheating, thought I personally don't thing so, yet it made me feel a bit uneasy and really bad for Jack.
Sam's personal and professional life goes compeltely off in this installment. Everything around her is in motion and changing but this also leads her to re-examine a lot of her personal issues. For the first time we see this warrior-like woman who appears so strong and in total control, in a state of inner turmoil and completely lost.
Things get even more difficult for Jack and I felt bad for him. His love for Sam is so strong, all-encompassing, yet it scares and confuses him. He is led by the best of intentions but he also makes some costly mistakes that affect everyone around him.
The story is told in multiple POVs and it's working really well, giving the readers different perspectives. This creates a lush background to all that is happening with the characters, main and supporting.
The book ends with a kind of cliffhanger, not the worst possible, yet there are lot of things left to be cleared in the final installment in the series. Things could go either way for all the characters and there are still secrets from Sam's past to be revealed.
It's a recommended read for anyine who have read and enjoyed the first book. If you like romantic suspense with strong and intriguing characters and a lot of military action, you should give this series a try. There is also a novella told from Rush's POV coming in between books 1 and 2 and you can get it for 0.99 on Amazon and for FREE if you sign-up for Ms Alexi Lawless newsletter.
Just finished the hellish tale of Complicated Creatures Part 2. Again Alexi Lawless has left the building and in the debris that is left in the aftermath I am left in withdrawals in the corner waiting for all this dust to settle and to figure out what is left and who is is left standing.
Another excellent, thrilling hot trial of writing, words, complicated characters, hot steaming sensual set ups and the dark corners of the souls, all with underlying needs and wants. This book has it all and I am so hooked that I will need another book as soon as I can hook it up.
This work is amazing in all the detail, and the unfolding.Every turning to the next page left me greedy for more, there is so much substance in these characters, all of them strong and with an agenda. There just aren't enough stars to give the girl her due here!! And I just can't go into the detail and all the twists of this series to do justice to this writing.
This may be a new road for the writings of Alexi Lawless, but I am sure in the corporate world where she came from her twisted head was writing pages of detail all along. I thank you for ditching the world and hitting the road and letting these people out of your head! What a great job!!!
This is definitely not your typical romantic suspense book. There isn't yet sign there will be the predictable happy ending (that I admit I tend to hope for...) and I can truly say I'm not sure I'm "rooting" for any of the main characters necessarily (romance wise) as they are all a bit messed up, BUT I think that this is more realistic of the complicated and messy nature of human beings. I must say I still hope for redemption and some happy endings but I'm not sure for who and in what form. I hope that the third part comes out sooner rather than later so I keep the book fresh in my interest and brain and I hope it wraps up the relational drama of the main love triangle at least. In the future reads I would love more of the parallel story lines that have been alluded to in part 1 (the "accident" of Sam's dad and brother, as well as the Rush romance). In summary, great author, action packed, bad-ass female lead, amazing supporting characters that really make this a robust read, and an interesting take of relationship and life issues. Can't wait for some more romance (even if it isn't super realistic).
Bravo Alexi. This 2nd part deserves very high accolades. It was actually better than the first part. The characters are fascinating and exciting. The story was seamless from part one to part two. I love both Jack and Wes, don't know which I like the best but at this very moment I would have to say Wes. Sam is some kind of woman, tough, intelligent and not afraid of anything, Thanks for the very entertaining hours that you afforded me to read. Go get-em Alexi, can't wait for part 3. This book deserves 10 stars,
Love this book! It was even better than the first part. Great action, less sex than the first one, wonderfully written and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was sad when it ended, and even more disappointed to realize that I'm going to have to wait for the next part to be written. This is an ADDICTIVE series. I can't believe how realistic it is, and how exciting. Definitely worth paying for.
All I can say is, wow. The author once again creates a world I got lost in. Even though the story line may be a bit unbelievable, I still bought into it. The author writes in a way with detail that makes it believable. In the first books, I loved Sam. In this book I started not to like her. I found this interesting because the author created a good character in the fact that is truly how people can affect you. My only problem with the book was the bickering between Jack and Wes. I do not believe men fight with words like this. Cannot wait to see what happens in the next book! One of my favorite book series so far. Lets see if it continues.
The second installment of Complicated Creatures by Alexi Lawless is another fast-paced, gorgeously written, winner of a book. From the first page to the last I was pulled right in.
This gem has a little bit of everything. Action...check. Romance...check. Suspense...check. Love triangle, cool villains, awesome supporting cast...check, check, check.
The writing is flawless and paced perfectly. The only potential negative for this book is the cliffhanger ending, but I don't mind them.
I will be rereading this book. I will also be waiting with baited breath for the next. Kudos Ms. Lawless on another fantastic adventure.
Wow this book...just wow! I enjoyed this series immensely! My hats off to the incredibly strong woman who does what ever it takes to protect the people she loves. Even if it means hurting then to do it. I absolutely can't wait for the third installment of this series! Definitely 5 stars!
Like Nothing I've Ever Read may have some spoilers This was one hell of a ride...we take up exactly where we left off at, which I believe is the airport. From there the story just moves, it never slows down. We are in deep with needing revenge against Lightner and Nazar. Unfortunately that does not include Jack. Jack has unfortunately fallen so in love with Sam that he can not see his life without her. And that leads to a bad road for him. While Jack struggles to get a grasp on life without Sam, Sam is planning her offensive against her enemies. While trying to fend off her affection for her first love Wes. We are gifted with all points of view from Sam, Jack, Wesley & Roxie. Roxie is our newcomer and also a kickass lady with a bag full of tricks. I was definitely very disappointed throughout this second part, especially with Jack and his behavior. But I couldn't fault him for his weakness. He dealt his whole hand and lost big, but can pull it together when he needs to and realizes that he's not willing to give up on Sam. Wes weasles his way in under Sam's armor and takes advantage of her weakness for her first love that had no real closure. Sam is not unrealistic in her attempt at revenge or exacting her version of justice. Which ultimately leaves us with unresolved questions at the end of this one again...except the third book isn't even listed on Goodreads yet...and I'm left feeling lost. hehe So what will happen with Sam? We leave her after the final showdown and are just barely given a bone at the end. Will she even have the energy to pick between the two men...will Jack even be there to fight for her? Wes will be there though, and I'm sorry but I'm totally team Jack even with his faults, cause Sam disappointed me too...I accept it as a form of closure for her, but I still don't like it at all. So we still are left hanging again....but I still love how beautifully written these two stories are. This leads me to reviewing Alexi Lawless in her entirety, can I hear a hell yeah! This one is the first one in this genre that I have found that I can honestly say wow. Its written with so much detail that it must have taken her months to get it just right. From all the different languages (Italian, Spanish, Russian, Persian etc), to doing it from multiple POVs, fight scenes, to military speak just wows me. Awesome job and although I'd love to rush you on the next one, I want it to just as great as the other two!!

Everything I said when I reviewed Complicated Creatures applies to this. This is what I said:- COMPLICATED CREATURES: This is Part One of a Love Story with an Action/Adventure Background. Alternatively it is a thrilling page-turner of a story in which two of the central characters happen to fall in love. No red-blooded male reader would not wish to change places with Jack, and female readers will likewise change places with Sam (Samantha) though they may not always approve of the way she treats Jack. Sam is an ex-special forces girl, expert marksman with a rifle, brilliant martial arts expert in all disciplines, particularly Judo her first choice. She is co-head of a firm specialising in bodyguard work, including finding kidnap victims and recovering them. She is from an oil-rich Texas family, but with a firm of over one hundred employees, she is now rich in her own right. Jack is a qualified architect and financially very successful property developer. Beautiful women meet him and then immediately lust after him and now, for the first time he meets a woman who does not, ------Sam. I recommend this to you both for the love story where the two main characters are believable in everything from action to speech, and for the brilliantly written action sequences when Sam and her team are at work. The main story is complete, except for the cliff hanger at the end when you will be left wondering just how the problems keeping Sam and Jack from –Happy Ever After will be resolved (or indeed if they even have a future together). In Part Two gets even more complicated as before long Sam has two suitors so it becomes a triangle. Enter Wes Elliott, a successful photojournalist and the first love of Sam’s life. You will enjoy that same high standard of story telling and characters’ development. The cliff-hanger ending is one of the most dramatic I have ever read and anyone hooked this far will, like me, be waiting for Part Three.

Complicated Creatures: Part Two: Hell or High Water picks up exactly where Part One left off, providing details on what has happened to Carey and how Samantha is dealing with Wesley and Jack. Samantha has always been in control but when a danger from her past with the military threatens those she loves, that control is tested and she will bring war to their door. Jack continues to struggle with Samantha's past and her closed emotions, while Wesley fights to take his place and be the man Samantha once use to love. Part Two delves into what happens when love is not enough and how mistakes from the past can destroy everything. The fast pace story-line and continued character development, easily makes Part two my favorite in the series. All three main characters are strong-willed, determined, and are trying to save the ones they love in their own way. Again the side characters added depth and I enjoyed being able to see the relationships being supportive. Like part one, Part two does end on a cliff-hanger and with Part Three not being out yet, I am anxiously awaiting how this story will end: Will Samantha get her revenge? Who will she choose? Will Jack or Wesley be able to overcome their own demons or will they have to let Samantha go? Fans of strong characters, heroines who can kick-ass, adventure, and romance, will love this book! I for one could not put it down!
I am so totally in love with this series!! Sam is such a bad-ass. I can't wait for them to finally make this into a movie! I've already started casting the characters in my mind (though I totally stalked the author's Tumblr for some added inspiration)
Could this be Sam??
Jack?
Wes?
or this guy instead??
Either way, I am completely captivated. Can't wait for the 3rd book to come out! I know it's supposedly the last of the trilogy but I'm kind of hoping the Lawless sets it up as a series, like Jack Reacher or James Bond, except for women. That would be SO COOL. Hurry up! Hurry up!!
To say this series was "hard to put down" would be an understatement.
I read this book on the train to work and my poor husband in the seat next to me had to ask me to stop gripping his arm! This book is packed with suspense, drama, action... It will leave your chin on the floor more times than your realize!
Over the course of the last few books, the writer has done such a great job of painting each character that I can't help but put faces in my own life to them. It's like watching a movie that sticks with you and leaves you wanting more.
I'm dying to know what happens to Samantha in the next chapter! Hurry up Alexi!!
This book continues on from Complicated Creatures Part 1, you must read Part 1 first. Can Jack and Sam make it through? Will Jack accept Sam’s extremely dangerous lifestyle. Then there’s Wes her old flame from School who wants her back no matter what. With a love triangle and the people from Sam’s past that want her killed what decisions will she make? The story really starts to unfold and take shape in this book(Part2), a compelling read that I really couldn’t put down. This book had me on the edge of my seat and I had to read this in one session ! Highly recommend and well worthy of 5 stars, can’t wait for Part 3.
I loved part 1 and may live this one just a little bit more! I enjoyed learning more about Sam, Jack, Wes, & Bear. I think I want Sam to end up with Jack. I hate cliffhangers and can't wait to read part 3. This series is so well written, the thoughts and feelings of the characters are developed and have depth. I could visualize the whole story and think it would make a great movie. The best part of this series is Sam. In this book we get to see her more vulnerable side which only ,makes her seem stronger to me. This book needs to be on top 100 list,
I was disappointed on reading the part 1 of this series. I didn't like Sam on how she treated Jack. I still don't like Wes since he is so flaky. I couldn't even continue with book 2. I liked Samantha on the Goddess Rising better. Writing is good and the actions. I gave this two stars due to the big Cliffhanger. I recommend this book but don't expect any HE A. I don't t think I will b e reading the last book since I can't relate with Sam and Wes. Couldn't stand Sam going back to him.
I didn't think it could be better than the first one, but true to form, Lawless outdid herself! I devoured this book and loved every second of being submerged in this fast-paced world. The rich details make for an engrossing read and the characters are so beautifully crafted. Eagerly awaiting the next installment!
Too much sappy love triangle crap. Loved Goddess rising but not the other two so much. Romances just aren't my thing. I like the back story of Sammy - her rise and fall she is the complicated creature. The love interests are textbook and cliched. The author could have had a great suspense story without the love story triangle.
I love this series! Kept me on the edge of my seat and couldn't put it down as I had to know what happened next. Can't wait to learn how this story ends.
I am enjoying these books - the only think I don't like is the other languages used which are not explained such as Italian and Spanish. There are references but you need to go and look at the endlist at the end of the book. It does not always well on Kindle Unlimited when trying to do this.
