I was deeply immersed in the riding world when a herniated disc in my lower back forced me to give it up. I had invested not just dollars, but huge blocks of time, my best energies and I loved the sport. The pinnacle of my riding career was doing a cross-country course in Ireland which is detailed in my story Irish Mist. Back home in California I was doing three-day events on an amateur level with my mare. I adored her and loved every moment we shared together on the trail and in the riding arena. Writing this story helped me get through the tremendous loss that I felt when I had to give her to Hearts and Horses a non-profit that helps handicapped children.(less)

This is one of those books where I'm not immediately drawn into the story. The beginning felt rushed, and I didn't care for Jorge, though I quickly started to like Gemcie, the main character, and within a short time, I started to care about other characters too. Once the first chapter was out of the way, I quickly fell in love with Gemcie and her passion. The setting and description really brought the story to life, and I loved that both Gemcie and Brady were animal lovers.

I really enjoyed list

Horse-related books make me feel so alive... Especially when I'm away from my horses and I desperately want to ride them. This one was no exception and I truly enjoyed my time reading.

I found the beginning of the book rushed and hard to keep up with, which is why I feared it wouldn't be as good as I expected it to be. However, as soon as I started reading it again, the story hooked me and I couldn't stop reading. The landscape descriptions, the feelings of freedom, the calmness of the mountains

After reading the description on the back of the book, I was excited to pick up The Cowgirl Jumped Over the Moon because I had just returned from my own horseback riding adventure in Wyoming. It was easy to picture the lead character, Gemcie, riding a wonderful horse through mountain terrain on a trek of self-discovery.

Ballou's book deals with some difficult topics - an equestrian accident, recovery from spinal injury, an unfaithful spouse. The accident portion was a little hard for me as a hor

From the opening hook, Linda Ballou’s The Cowgirl Jumped Over the Moon paints a rich picture of not just the show jumping world that Gemcie had earned her place in through hard work and dedication. The accident that dashes the ambitions of Gemcie and her Irish Hunter, Marshal, leads to other events that unravel her life, create new sub plots and take Gemcie into another world dominated by the high Sierras and a different style of riding - western.

The language continues to evoke images and sensat

Grand Pix has never been more intriguing! Linda Ballou creates a scenario of charismatic characters, beautiful surroundings, incredible inspiration, and horse adventure. Ballou’s own personal experience shines through as she takes you on the inside track of owning a horse, riding a horse, and all of the emotions that go along with being an equestrian. A great story of the ups and downs of life and the thrills of owning a horse. A must reader for every horse-lover.

4 Star Review of The Cowgirl Jumped Over the Moon by Linda Ballou
Linda Ballou was a new author to me and I listened to this book on audio and really enjoyed it.
This was one of those books that I listened to with a great deal of interest since I was not familiar with the world that it is based on. It is obvious that Ms. Ballou knows the world of horses and showings.
What happens when you lose almost everything you have worked for, that is the position that Gemcie finds herself in. Struggling to

Linda Ballou’s The Cowgirl Jumped Over the Moon takes readers on an adventurous ride through the high-level show world and a vastly different encounter of discovery with Mother Nature. Ballou’s experience as a travel writer comes through vividly as she describes protagonist Gemcie’s trip through the Pacific Crest trail as she sets out to find herself after she feels she has lost most of what she has cared about in the past. Her descriptions are beautiful, and one feels as if they are in the scen ...more

Linda Ballou knows her horses! Her accurate and authentic descriptions of the high dollar show world were very enjoyable and engrossing. Her vivid description of the sights, smells, flora and fauna of the high Sierras took me back to my nineteenth summer when I taught horseback riding at a summer camp in the Colorado Rockies. She nailed the mountains! A very pleasing story!

Linda Ballou’s The Cowgirl Jumped over the Moon is a thoughtful story that holds appeal for more than its targeted new adult reader. Beyond bond between horse and human and the culture of equestrian competition are layers of environmental concern, human and familial relationships, love of nature, and finding one’s place in the world.

While the main thread of the story begins and ends with 19-year-old Gemcie McCauley’s ultimate quest aboard Marshal for the World Cup, her deeper and more personal

This book was very different from the type of book I usually read however it appealed to the horse rider in me.

The story follows Gemcie, a young showjumper competing at the highest level, who is badly hurt when she falls from her horse during a competition. Forced to stop riding for a period as she works to recover, her main rival takes over her ride and moves in on her husband. Gemcie has to re assess her life, overcome her fear of falling and decide what she wants to be. To do this s

The story started out very strong, with Gemcie and her horse Marshal, competing at the top level. After a bad fall and even worse, a cheating husband with one of her rivals, she decides to set out on her own to follow the path of her estranged father. Interesting and different from other stories it will keep you reading.

Gemcie is a talented and determined rider who has a great sponsor, an exceptional horse and a supportive husband at the young age of 19. It seems she is destined for great things in the equestrian world.
A freak accident and a battle to get back on the horse are enough hurdles to overcome...

Gemcie seems to have it all at the beginning of this story. But she shows how quickly things can change. We get to see her grow and to realize her limitations of things she cannot change. She takes us along on her journey of self-discovery. One thing this story made me come to realize is this is one where I need to "set the mood". I look forward to the time when I can listen to her story again.

I didn't mean to read another book! But instead of working, or heading to the barn, or going back to school shoe shopping for kids, I was reading this book. Kept telling myself one more page and then I will wait to finish...but one page became another and another and well....thats what happens when a book is good! I received this book in exchange for an honest review...and loved it. If you wonder at the title, it is explained in the book and makes perfect sense. And if you wonder how the author ...more

I received this audiobook free in exchange for an honest review. The author has a lyrical way of writing that I quite liked. She put a lot of depth into the book, with details of riding, show jumping and what goes into show jumping, as well as the beautiful mountains that the main character finds herself in. Overall, it was a very enjoyable book to listen to.

I did have some problems with the way the narrative seemed to jump around at times; sudden switches of topics. Now this might have been bec

Just when Gemsie thinks she has her life figured out!!

Author Linda Ballou entertains you with beautiful details which allows you to experience the scene as if you were actually there.

At first Gemsie seems to have it all. She has recently married "the love of her life", and into an extremely wealthy family to boot! As a result, she is able to ride an extremely well bred stallion and is expected to win the Grand Prix! Unfortunately, while competing, she has an severe accident that will most likely

I found it hard to find info on this read other than the brief description, but being a horse addict decided I wanted to read it anyway....I’d got the impression it was a romance – well, there is romance in it but its a very small part of the story, beautifully written and very bittersweet when it does come. Its really an essential part in the story of Gemcie’s recover

Sometimes life knocks you around and all you can do is hold on, and try to find yourself again.

The Cowgirl Jumped Over The Moon is such a story. Gemcie lost everything in one moment. Her fall would cost her the chance at the World Cup, her marriage and the horse she loves above all else. The basics of the story can be found in the cover description. What you won’t find there is the heartache, the recovery and the spirit of this amazing young lady. This novel is

A love triangle of extremes has proven to be a solid base for my writing. From my roots in Alaska I receive strength, solitude, centeredness and respect for the awful power of nature. In Hawaii I found nurturing, a spiritual awakening, sensuality, peace and my heroine for my historical fiction, Wai-nani-A Voice from Old Hawaii.
