Nightcats
Not yet published
Expected 26 Oct 26In this feral feminist vampire novel, cats—and cat ladies—are out for blood.
It’s 2005, and Vera Valcourt is an aimless goth waitress in New York City, desperate for something to sink her teeth into. Caged by her Catholic upbringing, her dead-end job, and her deadbeat boyfriend, Vera’s only solace is her rescue cat, Sammy. But when Sammy disappears, Vera is forced to claw her way out of the domestic life she’s been trapped inside.
The frantic search for her missing cat drives Vera into the dark underbelly of cat lore. Following a blood-soaked trail blazed by a medieval abbess and a roaring twenties witch, Vera is cast into a world of ancient myths and ancestral magic, ruthless cults and cutthroat cat ladies. If she and her beloved Sammy are to survive, Vera must uncover the secrets of a deadly feline species with more than nine lives.
A suspenseful mix of occult horror and urban fantasy drenched in dark humor, Nightcats explores the unbreakable bonds between women and their cats, and what we sacrifice to keep our teeth sharp in a world that wants us defanged.

i am hissing with the pussycats while they spark hisses of witchcraft!
⏾⋆˙⟡ 🐈⬛ ”midnight on four legs, he sang, your blood to her is sweet. little girl, stay far from the caves, he sang, for even monsters need to eat.”
CATS + NOCTURNAL + FERAL FEMMES?!
OH I AM TELEPORTING WHEREVER THEY ARE!!
nightcats is a gorgeous, feral, feminine vampire novel featuring women & their unbreakable bonds with their cats.
they sacrifice what is ”to keep our teeth sharp in a world that wants us defanged.”
you know what caught my attention immediately?
the black cat on the cover and it saying ‘a vampire novel’ which means.. dun dun dun.. instant request!
this novel is drenched in feline mythology, occult, folklore, witchcraft, vampiric cats, & egyptology!
bloodthirsty mystical cats? nothing more morbid i could ask for and not a single target was missed!
delivered all the goodies and was everything i expected it to be to get you psyched up in october!
to all the weird girls, this one’s for you!
3 women across 3 different time periods & povs:
vera valcourt (present day) - her beloved cat sammy goes missing which leads her to a deadly feline species.
as a cat lover girl myself i deeply understood her madness out for blood in search for her
cassandra blackmayne (1925) - witchy woman!
the abbess (1232) - enduring a wrath of priests †
⏾⋆˙⟡ 🐈⬛ ”cats over children. magic over men. sisterhood over society.”
i revered in the strange, gothy, & eerie ambience!
however, this did feel a tad overwritten and drawn out in the middle but i am definitely settling for a 4 stars because it just makes most sense. the tiny snippets of quotes in between the chapters were a satisfying addition.
this entire novel was excitingly set in motion pretty much perfectly with dark magical cat lore hidden behind mythical history and powerful perspectives stuffed of engaging prose. there’s a lot of animal harm so you should keep that in mind before jumping in. another arc marked off for the books!
always grateful to gain early access to read my approved arcs!
overall, i very much suggest giving this a go if you enjoy each of the tropes i said above!
the orange glowing eyes are lurking, ready to feast, wrapped in the midnight shadows.
maybe in another life i will reincarnate as a vampire black cat
⏾⋆˙⟡ 🐈⬛ ”a black cat leapt upon the altar and buried its face inside the chalice. stunned by the spectacle, we looked on as father reinhold coughed and the creature drank his most precious blood.”
thank you netgalley & feral eye for providing the arc in exchange for my honest review!~

Thank you NetGalley and Feral Eye For the ARC. Nightcats releases October 26, 2026.
Nightcats by Kristen Sollee is a purrfect read for me. I adore cats. I’m obsessed with them, and this book is also cat obsessed! There’s like Vampires and cats, and fun lore, and some culty, witchy stuff and it’s just so fun. I am going to preorder a physical copy of this book because I love it and want to read it again.
I’m going to rave about this book to everyone I know, for years to come and it’s very high on my list of best books now. It’s so good and so interesting. I really had to take my time with it because I wanted to savor it and absorb everything. There’s a perfect balance There’s some messed up stuff that happens but it isn’t over the top or too much.
Overall, in case you couldn’t tell, I would highly recommend this book and really loved it.

“Nightcats” - “Cats over children. Magic over men. Sisterhood over society.”
★★★★☆
Feral Femmes, Clever Cats, Creepy Cults and Vigorous Vampires, what more could a morbid mortal ask for?
This novel delivered everything I expected when I read the premise.
The story shifts between 3 timelines and blends them in such a way that it reveals pieces of the bigger picture over time and that is a picture you’ll want to feast your eyes upon.
If you are looking for a tale with dark gothic, mystical and occult elements, loads of claws and fangs, “Nightcats” might just be the answer to your call. Because “She” will want you to read it and you won’t disobey “Her”.
Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC, I leave this review voluntarily.

The premise of this seems really promising, but it leaves a lot to be desired. It moves exceedingly slow, so much so that it adds little to the overall story. There are too many needless details which slowed the pace way down, and it felt like a chore to push forward. The boyfriend absolutely sucks and the fact that he's still relevant however many pages later is ridiculous. It just feels like wannabe goth on repeat.

We know that cats get a bad rap. Associated with witches and the occult, cats are oftentimes described as aloof and unpredictable. The novel Nightcats reinforces some of this. We have ancient zombie-like vampiric cats who feed off of human and other animal blood and kill anyone who might get in their way.
The story follows three women from three different time periods; an unnamed abbess from an abbey in the 1200s, Cassandra, living in England during the 1920s, and Vera, a young woman living in NYC in the early 2000s. Vera’s cat, Sammy, disappears which sets into motion her strange discovery of the history behind ancient cat lore, ancestral magic, witches, and bloodthirsty cults.
The female characters are well-developed especially Vera, from whose perspective we gain most of the knowledge behind vampiric cat history and cult. She struggles to make sense of the loss of her beloved aunt Brenda, her problematic relationship with a loser boyfriend and her lack purpose in life. Throughout the story, we see Vera become stronger and more accomplished at solving problems and uncovering the truth behind the complex nature of the ancient cat cult which seemed to have originated in the Egyptian culture with the goddess Bastet.
The story is exciting and fast paced, for the most part. There is a bit of a lull in the action in the middle of the novel, but this is mostly due to focus on the historical background of the cult. There is a strong emphasis on the patriarchy and how women throughout history have not had control or agency in their own lives. The Abbess, for example, must endure the wrath of oppressive and violent priests who attempt to keep the nuns in their places. Vera must contend with a selfish and deadbeat boyfriend who has little regard for Vera’s wishes and most likely abused Sammy, Vera’s beloved cat. Cassandra has been shunned by her fiancé and family for practicing magic and exhibiting witchy ways.
Well written with an interestingly powerful perspective and story-line filled with engaging prose and strong character development, the novel gives the reader a lot to think about in terms of women’s positioning in a male- dominated world and how they reckon with getting some of their power back.
There are many graphic scene, blood and gore, references to animal abuse and overall disturbing creepy cat encounter, but a truly exciting story.
Thank you to Net Galley, Feral Eye Publishing and Kristen Sollée for a copy of Nightcats in return for an honest review.

If you too are a big fan of cats, vampires, occult, and goth women, this book may be for you!
Vera may have questionable taste in men, but she makes up for her inability to tell her boyfriend to get wrecked with immaculate taste in aesthetics, and she also has a cat; we love cats. We start the story with Vera losing Sammy. No, not because of anything Vera did; her useless boyfriend purposefully lets Sammy out, and when an indoor cat goes outside, well, you typically do not see said cat again. In hopes of finding Sammy, Vera begins a hunt around the city, and eventually ends up in the heart of a pretty wild, witchy-occult cat cult.
I don’t think I was smart enough for this story. The pacing was slow, and the timeline hops and perspective hops ended up being too much. I also found myself not as interested in anyone but Vera. I was so invested in Vera trying to find Sammy, and I was very hopeful as I finished each chapter that the next chapter would be the one where she leaves her boyfriend. I really thought this book would have been for me; I love cats, I love witchy-occult horror, and I love vampires. And I did love those things in the novel; it just felt like it was doing way too much.
I also didn’t love the character growth, or I should say lack of it, from Vera. I’m not saying that every character in a novel has to grow, but I didn’t buy Vera’s character. She’s sold to us as a goth baddie, but in most cases in her life, she lets people walk all over her. She also partook in self-harm, which could have fleshed out her character more, but even that was brushed under as “she just likes to do it.” Some parts rubbed me the wrong way, and people can contain multitudes, but she wasn’t fleshed out enough for me to understand why she did the things she did.
The premise does a lot of heavy lifting because it is interesting: I do love cats, the occult, and vampires (as I’ve now mentioned I think four times in this review), and that helped throughout the book. The ending is a lot of fun, but you have to get through the middle of it to get there.
With all that said, I enjoyed it, but again, big fan of cats, vampires, the occult, and goth girls, so there was never a world where I wasn’t going to enjoy this at least mildly.

Okay… CATS + NIGHT + MYSTERY?! You really didn't need to do much more to convince me. 😂🐈⬛🌙
Nightcats had me intrigued from the start. There’s something about a story wrapped in nighttime energy, mysterious felines, and a little bit of the unknown that immediately hits that part of my brain that says, “Yep. We're reading this.” 🖤
I really enjoyed the atmospheric feel of this one. It has that wonderfully strange, slightly eerie quality where you feel like there’s always something lurking just beyond what you can see. And honestly, give me a mysterious cat appearing at night and I am following it into the darkness despite knowing that is probably how horror movies begin. 😂🐈⬛
The mysterious elements and darker undertones kept me curious, and I loved the way the story leaned into the strange and unexpected. It definitely has a distinctive atmosphere that makes it easy to get swept up in.
There were a few moments where I wanted a little more depth and development, which is why I'm settling on four stars, but overall this was an intriguing and atmospheric read that kept me entertained.
If you love mysterious cats, nighttime adventures, eerie vibes, folklore, supernatural weirdness, and stories that make you question exactly what is hiding in the shadows, add this one to your TBR. 🐈⬛🖤
And honestly…
Would I follow a mysterious cat into the darkness?
Unfortunately, yes.
Do I trust my decision-making skills?
Absolutely not. 😂🐈⬛

The cats are not alive but their essence is roaming through the streets. A feminist tale that looks back to the ways of matriarchal cultures and practices. You can experience the love that Kristen writes with as she creates a world that values the misrepresented in society. She chooses a society that is clawing its way back to the mainstream. The relationship between the woman and her cats is undeniably beautiful. An undead fairy tale for those who lean towards the macabre way of storytelling.
This was a fun vampire store that I was immediately excited to dive into. This is a slow paced read that starts to build up the setting with nuance and Egyptian mythology. Bastet of course makes her presence known and the cats are devout to show her ways. Of course, Bastet is not the only one we meet on our travels. I wish the Egyptian mythology were explored deeper to build a stronger connection between the cats and the living dead. I absolutely appreciated the mention of DC’s Catwoman and the way the mythology is written into the being of that power.
What does it mean to come into your divine power? This is what you find out as you read about the bond between one human and her felines. There is something unbreakable here that is hard to deny. I sat with this for a moment before deciding how I felt about this book. I would have loved to see the explanation of the paranormal thrown throughout the novel but I appreciated the appearance of the undead cats. Peculiar and interesting read for the spooky season. Thank you Feral Eye and Netgalley for this advanced digital copy. All opinions are my own.

cats…cats…and more cats
Thank you to NetGalley and Feral Eye Publishing House for the EARC!
This book is everything it promised to be: vampire cats, secret cults, mythology, gothic vibes, witchcraft, and, of course, cats. It definitely explores some dark and uncomfortable themes throughout the story, so be prepared for things to get weird.
We follow four main characters across three different timelines, slowly piecing together the mystery of the NightCats. Candy takes us between the modern day and the Roaring Twenties, while Vera, our main character, is a goth waitress in the present day. Cassandra is connected to the origins of the modern-day cult, while a medieval abbess takes us all the way back to the beginning of the NightCats mystery through her journal entries.
I really enjoyed how each timeline and character revealed another piece of the puzzle. As Vera (and the reader) slowly figures out what is actually happening, the story keeps you guessing. Honestly, some of the plot twists were AMAZING, and I never fully knew what the next page was going to bring.
The worldbuilding was also one of my favourite parts. There is so much strange mythology woven throughout the story, and the combination of witchcraft, religion, cults, and gothic horror creates such a unique atmosphere.
I especially loved the book's exploration of spirituality through Vera. It offers an interesting critique of organized religion while exploring what spirituality can look like outside of the boxes that society has created for us.
Overall, NightCats is strange, gothic, unsettling, and completely its own thing. If you're looking for something bizarre and witchy to read this fall, this is definitely a Weird Girl Autumn must-read.

Between the cover featuring a cat & that the story features vampire cats, I was immediately drawn to this book. It's a heady volume of feline folklore entwined with witchcraft & the occult, modern goth, & urban fantasy. However, be sure to read the content warnings before you dive in - there are some graphic descriptions of animal harm & death, self-harm, gore... check the full list on the author's website.
The mythology and occult woven throughout the story create a macabre atmosphere that was very visceral, making it easy to visualize the dark & ominous settings. Definitely a great read for spooky season. I also loved the music & movie references.
The novel does a great job of capturing the historical (and present) stereotypes of cats & women and how our patriarchal society uses that to control women and then subverting that to show women taking power and asserting their independence...feral feminism at its best.
I was hoping to see more character growth from Vera the main character, though the struggles she experiences in her relationships are relatable. Self-harm plays a role in the plot, but it seemed glamorized to me, and this portrayal didn't sit well with me. In the end. it was the graphic depiction of animal harm and death that detracted from my enjoyment - I think reading this while my own cat was snuggled on my lap made that less palatable. I prefer more suspenseful horror over gore & cruelty.
This book might be for you if you like cat vampires, goth women MCs, cults, & gore.

In the end. it was the graphic depiction of animal harm and death that detracted from my enjoyment - I think reading this while my own cat was snuggled on my lap made that less palatable. I prefer more suspenseful horror over gore & cruelty.
This book might be for you if you like cat vampires, goth women MCs, cults, & gore.
Thank you to Netgalley & Feral Eye for the opportunity to review this book. All thoughts my own.

Cats and witches have always been intertwined. Who is Sabrina without Salem, Freyja without her chariot pullers? This book goes one step further, pulling readers into a world of vampiric cats and a cultish coven. Vera, a goth with not much going for her, has her life turned upside down when her cat, Sammy, disappears after her wanna-be rockstar boyfriend leaves a window open. Accidentally following the footsteps of her aunt, she finds her way to a cat shelter where things aren’t quite right. Can she get her beloved cat back without a catfight?
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, as any witchy cat lady would! I loved how well-written the girls were, and the switches between current time and the past. I’m very picky when it comes to changing view points, but the author did a delightful job. The lore of the side characters makes this such a terrifying ride, and it kept me guessing! The ending left me wanting a little more, but I didn’t mind it was left with a little untold.
My only complaint is the self-harm. It’s written in a very beautiful way, a little too beautiful in my opinion. It veers on the edge of glorification, and unfortunately that’s not for me.
Overall, I would absolutely read this book again, and I would pay to be able to read it again for the first time! The perfect witchy read for this autumn.

Do you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sabrina the Teenage Witch? You will probably enjoy this campy horror as much as I did. Truly such a spooky and entertaining fall read. Get your candles out and your witchy music playing!
I really enjoyed the different perspectives of the story and how they ultimately came together. It was also fun how Sollée enmeshed historical witch and cat elements throughout the book, although the Egyptian side of things was never quite clear to me. There were also sometimes where it felt a little overwritten and in need of just a smidge of extraneous detail trimming. And one near steamy kissing scene that seemed a bit superfluous and I ended the chapter wondering why it happened and it never came up again.
A fair warning, there were a few parts of the book (one in particular that haunts me) that made me gag. So if you're squeamish about blood you might want to skip this book - but you probably wouldn't be interested in vampires anyways.
This book made me look differently at my cat for a few days and I wouldn't stop talking to people about it. If thats not a sign for a fun read - I don't know what is!

So, I'd be lying if I said the cover didn't immediately catch my eye, plus those edges wow.
But also, a cat so I'm sold.
Three time lines spill out telling us about three women, Vera the one from the most present day and her cat that has disappeared. She dives into searching for answers and finds some dark history around vapire cats while struggling with her regular day life and the loss of her Aunt.
The Abbess who is forced to deal with violent fucked up priests and control being exerted over them, the dangers of a woman who had time to think, to breathe is one too much for the men and oppressors of her time.
And Cassandra, her family punishing her for just being different, nothing bad, just finding peace finally in her craft and coming into her own magic.
Fuck Vera's boyfriend. For real, absolute trash.
This is about cats and women, women who find their own inner core to draw on and become the strong women they were meant to be. It's horrifying and awful the things they went through, but through put history and the book, we see both overcoming the hate and overcoming the men that shove them down.
I really liked this.

“Cats over children. Magic over men. Sisterhood over society.”
I received a NetGalley arc but all thoughts are my own!
What a unique and engaging vampire novel! I found myself relating to Vera more than initially anticipated its rare to find a good story with a goth FMC. This has a beautiful beginning that wraps you within its shadows. However, this book suffers from a dragging middle that almost has me putting it down. But, you must push trough to find yourself at a spectacular ending! I fell in love with all the references to the goth subculture, from the jokes about its Winklepicker clad elders refusing to accept anything that came out after the 80s to the many movie and musical groups mentioned through out. If you find yourself confused by some of these musicians I highly suggest giving them a listen! Most though are huge goth bands so I would be very surprised if you haven't heard of them or heard their music before without even realizing.
However, there are some descriptions of cats that should have had a trigger warning attached. I wasn't a fan of that.

I absolutely loved the premise of this book. Feline vampires? What could be better?!
When I first met our leading lady, Vera Valcourt, I felt a kinship, most likely driven by her undying love for her cat, Sammy. When Sammy goes missing, Vera tumbles into a frantic search that uncovers mysteries from centuries past and a cat-loving occultist sisterhood. This was like catnip to me.
However, I struggled with the multiple POVs. The book jumps from 2005 to 1232, but both read like 2026 - which is fine, I guess, but it took me out of the story every time we switched characters. I found myself dredging through the other POVs until we got back to Vera. I wish the book stayed with her the entire time and uncovered the history in a different way than multiple story arcs.
Content warning ⚠️ Nightcats includes an unexpected and graphic depiction of self-harm which could be VERY triggering to a reader who has this lived experience.

UMMM HELLO???? VAMPIRES AND CATS???? I WAS SOLD IMMEDIATELY.
Nightcats was such a fun, weird, dark, and completely feral read. I loved the combination of occult horror, vampires, feminism, cats, and dark humor. It’s such a unique concept and somehow manages to make cats feel even more mysterious and terrifying than they already are 😂.
I really enjoyed Vera’s journey throughout the story, especially watching her slowly claw her way out of the life she felt trapped in. The whole exploration of women, power, independence, and what we sacrifice to survive was SO interesting.
And the cat lore??? YES. I loved how much mythology and occult history was woven into the story. It gave everything this creepy, gothic atmosphere while still being genuinely fun.
This was such a strange little book in the best possible way, and I absolutely ate it up. If you love cats, vampires, feminist horror, occult mysteries, or just books that are a little unhinged, you NEED to pick this up.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Feral Eye for the ARC!

In this feral feminist vampire novel, cats—and cat ladies—are out for blood.
Cats have long carried an unfortunate reputation as mysterious, aloof, and tied to the occult. Nightcats leans fully into that mythology with ancient, vampiric cats that feed on blood and kill anyone who gets in their way.
The story is creepy, atmospheric, and fast-paced, with beautifully lyrical prose that adds an almost dreamlike quality to the darker moments. With strong characterization, an intriguing premise, lyrical writing, and plenty of blood and gore, Nightcats is an unsettling and engrossing read. It offers plenty to think about regarding female agency and reclaiming power while delivering genuinely disturbing encounters with its vampiric cats. Readers should be prepared for graphic violence, animal abuse, blood, gore, and some deeply creepy imagery.
Easily a 5 star read.

The first thing I need to say here is that this book does contain animal harm and death. Proceed with caution, especially if you're a cat lover.
The author does provide a content advisory at the start of the book.
That aside, I did enjoy Nightcats.
There's a lot going on in the book, across multiple points of view and timelines, which keeps the pace ticking along. And with vampire cats, a cat lady cult, and a sprinkling of magic, there's plenty to explore and discover. I really don't want to say too much, because I had a lot of fun working out what was happening. I especially enjoyed the Lonetal Heresy chapters.
There were times when I felt the book could have been more compelling or that I was missing something, but everything came together in the end so that was probably just me.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy.

Nightcats is a unique foray into feminism, folklore, and history. The story follows three women in vastly different timelines experiencing magic, mysticism, and cats! When the timelines begin to overlap and connections are made it really makes for a crazy time. I enjoyed aspects of this book, but I do feel that it could be significantly edited down. It could be very slow at times and almost on the boring side. I also think that to enjoy this book you really have to have a strong interest in feminism and cats (which I do) but outside of those topics this probably would be a challenging book to get through. Also tw for self harm, and gore for sure, plenty of blood, which almost goes without saying because this is in fact at base a vampire story. I give it 2.5/ 5 stars, rounded to 3 here. Thank you to netgalley for this arc!

Brutal and atmospheric, Nightcats was a hissing good time for cat, cult, and vampire lovers! I really enjoyed the feline mythology; it was well researched and fascinating.
Multiple POVs can be hit or miss for me. While each one was distinct and thoughtfully crafted, I found myself connecting with Cassandra and the women in the Abbey in 1232 (both of these POVS were historical fiction). I wanted MORE of them! This book would've been 5 stars if it would've read like historical fiction throughout the entire book and if it was written only from those POVS. But that is just a personal preference on my part. Overall, I really enjoyed this ferocious book!
Thanks so much to Netgalley, author, and publisher for an ARC.

I loved everything about this book. It’s probably my favorite horror book of the year, especially because I love Egyptian mythology.
The vampire cats were such a fun and creepy idea. I loved the whole mythology and lore surrounding them, and the mix of occult horror, ancient magic, witches, and dark humor worked so well for me.I loved following Vera as she went from being stuck in this miserable little life to getting pulled into something completely bizarre and dangerous because she refused to give up on Sammy.
This book was weird, creepy, funny, and completely entertaining. And obviously, a horror story involving cats was always going to have my attention. 😂
I honestly loved this one from beginning to end.

A Sisters of Mercy tee, coffin-shaped wallet, and Razr phone—this is the authentic early 2000s goth experience! With fall (slowly) descending outside, I want to oil up my Docs and artfully rip my tights so I can go hang out with Vera, the main character.
I expected a fun, nostalgic romp through the metaphorical (or real) graveyard, and the book definitely delivered. It also had unexpected depths—without giving anything away, we learn almost immediately that Vera used to be Catholic, and this book deals with supernatural themes. I found her struggle raw and authentic.
Creepy, visceral, atmospheric, this a must-read for anyone who loves cats, goths, and badass women.

Okay, this book was MADE for my dark little horror-loving heart. 🖤 Nightcats is weird, creepy, bloody, gothic, and completely feral—and somehow manages to make cats even more terrifying than they already are.
I loved the occult lore, the vampires, the goth atmosphere, and especially the way this story digs into women, power, independence, and what happens when women stop letting the world keep them small. Vera’s journey pulled me in, and the mythology surrounding the cats was absolutely fascinating.
This is the kind of strange, dark horror I love finding—a little unhinged, a little feminist, and wonderfully creepy. If you love goths, cats, occult horror, vampires, and badass women, you need this book.

Cats? Witches? Vampires? Say less.
“Cats over children. Magic over men. Sisterhood over society.”
The story blends horror and urban fantasy with dark humour while still exploring some heavier themes surrounding womanhood and spirituality. Beneath all the supernatural chaos is also a surprisingly heartfelt story about the bond between women and their cats. As a cat person, I completely understood Vera’s willingness to burn everything down to find Sammy. You can tell the author did thorough research into the lore/mythology of cats. A spooky season must read!

Nightscats is a truthfully feral book field with cat cult history, with feminism, with a lot stage of grief and a little bit of cats obsessions. You also have religious cult in general and about the cats. This book Is not for everyone , truly this isn’t for everyone because from all of above we also have lot of violence against animals, expecially cats, lots of blood, self harm, sexism and slurs. This is a feral book I couldn’t think about this and have and better description, it’s unapologetic and cruel. I can give at this book three point five stars for the most but I have enjoy it so I can raise my rating to four stars

I fear this book is not for me despite the attractive cover and description sounding great. The author uses the cat's name, Sammy excessively and it was starting to grate on my nerves. Just for giggles, I decided to search to see how many times the word "Sammy" is used in this book and it's 308. Gee, I wonder what the cat's name is. I know this sounds petty and I totally get that the cat is a huge part of the story but I'm over it.
This book may be a hit for others, but it was a "nay" for me.

I'll admit the opening had me worried the pacing felt slow to start, and I wasn't sure it was going to hook me. But once I settled into the rhythm of the story, it really came together and I found myself genuinely enjoying it.
The standout for me was Cassandra's POV. Her chapters had a different energy to the rest of the book and I looked forward to coming back to her perspective every time it came up. That alone elevated the read for me.
Not a perfect start, but it earns its four stars by the time you're through it. Recommended if you can push past the first stretch.

DNFed at 68%, and I really should have quit at 20%. I like horror, but I do not like senseless gore. I felt like the book was a bit too long and should have been edited down. I also believe that if the timeline were linear, I would have believed in the entity's power and the intrigue of joining its ranks instead of just being grossed out and a little confused about what exactly the feminist ideas in this book were supposed to be. Great idea, odd execution.

Thank you to Netgalley and Feral Eye for an Arc of this book.
An intriguing blend of fiction, folklore, and the occult. The writing pulls you into the atmosphere completely as the secrets of the past and present are revealed.
The middle drags a bit, but you're left with a chapter cliffhanger that had me speeding through the chapters to get back to that pov and find out what happens next.
The novel definitely delivers on the premise and I enjoyed this unique read.
