I grabbed this Pride and Prejudice fanfic as a Kindle freebie. It's a collection of two novellas and a short novel, all based around alternative storylines in the P&P world:

* What if Darcy had gotten up the nerve to actually have a heart to heart talk with Lizzy in the library at Netherfield? (Worth the price of admission just to read about Darcy putting Caroline Bingley in an armlock when she tried to put the moves on him, lol! So out of place for Darcy's character and his time, but it I grabbed this Pride and Prejudice fanfic as a Kindle freebie. It's a collection of two novellas and a short novel, all based around alternative storylines in the P&P world:

* What if Darcy had gotten up the nerve to actually have a heart to heart talk with Lizzy in the library at Netherfield? (Worth the price of admission just to read about Darcy putting Caroline Bingley in an armlock when she tried to put the moves on him, lol! So out of place for Darcy's character and his time, but it made me laugh.)

* What if Elizabeth saw Wickham trying to force Georgiana Darcy to go to Gretna Green and marry him, so she wrote a quick letter to Darcy, saving Georgiana but compromising herself, so Darcy marries her in a quick marriage of convenience to save her reputation? (This is long before they met in the actual book.) The weird alternative universe thing here is that sweet, quiet Georgiana is a spoiled brat. Elizabeth tries to take her in hand, but meets with some resistance from Darcy, not to mention Georgiana. Bonus plot device: slaveholding concerns, which was quite interesting.

* What if Elizabeth and Darcy met when she befriended Georgiana on a family stay in the seaside town of Ramsgate, when Georgiana catches Wickham kissing Mrs. Younge and goes running to Elizabeth to stay with her until the cavalry (her brother) arrives? More freaky alternative universe things happen, as other characters get involved with people who are not the ones they marry in the actual book.

It's not too bad for fan fiction, if you don't mind:
- some characters who are totally reimagined from their personalities in the original book. Mr Bennet, for example, gets a hard knock in the second story, as well as Georgiana.
- the Regency setting being thin, with lots of anachronisms that will drive Regency sticklers nuts.
- Elizabeth and Darcy being all sappy about each other very quickly, in every story (even the arranged marriage one), and both are Practically Perfect in Every Way®. For example, Darcy admits that he lied when he said Elizabeth wasn't handsome enough to tempt him; really he thinks she's lovely and has wanted her bad from pretty much the very start.

Well, I have to say that one of the markers for how I will rate a story is whether or not it brings me to tears. In reading these three stories I was brought to tears by two out of the three. I had read the first two stories Online as WIPs. I had enjoyed them there and enjoyed them just as much in the re-reading.

THE LIBRARY: This novella is set, for the majority, at Netherfield during the time Elizabeth spent nursing Jane. As you may recall, Jane became ill after being sent to dine with Caroline Well, I have to say that one of the markers for how I will rate a story is whether or not it brings me to tears. I had enjoyed them there and enjoyed them just as much in the re-reading.

THE LIBRARY: This novella is set, for the majority, at Netherfield during the time Elizabeth spent nursing Jane. As you may recall, Jane became ill after being sent to dine with Caroline Bingley and Mrs. Hurst on horseback during which she encountered a rain storm. I loved the changes that evolved in the library. Both Elizabeth and Darcy are sitting within reading Hamlet, but Darcy is soon caught staring at Elizabeth as her face undergoes many changes while she reads and even as she laughs. (He does not remember any humor in that play.) Elizabeth is as we know - totally unaware of why Darcy watches her, sure that it is to find fault, to make judgments, and Darcy is also as we know him from canon - sure that any woman would welcome his attentions, even his offer of marriage. We read in delight how the emotions of both evolve through conversation ALONE in the library. And upon reflection, Darcy realizes that this opportunity is what is missing from so many courtships...a chance to really talk and learn of another's character and opinions, even to attempt to correct certain mistaken ones, without interruption and without concern for onlookers and their censure. Caroline Bingley makes a short abrupt appearance while a certain footman stands guard outside the open library door. (Love the part where he watches Caroline adjust a certain part of her décolletage.) I am sure you will enjoy reading of two people making changes in their suppositions and coming to a better understanding. There is also a humorous epilogue, in which the footman makes another appearance.

MARRIED: Again, I enjoyed reading this a second time, probably even more so, as it was without the interruptions of waiting for another chapter to be posted Online. I loved Elizabeth’s wisdom in dealing with new relatives and even in holding her tongue rather than saying, “I told you so.” in certain situations.

Elizabeth’s insights and good judgment make an early appearance in this novel. But in rescuing a young lady in distress she has unfortunately now compromised herself. And at times it seems SO TOTALLY UNFAIR. Even her beloved father cannot see any solution but that with which our dear Col. Fitzwilliam has come up.

I do not want to write SPOILERS here so cannot say too much. But Georgiana’s behaviors, her learning through a visit to Mrs. Timmons, Lady Matlock’s support of Elizabeth and insights (even in recommending a companion for her niece), her decisions about her own marriage relationship, Lady C.’s and Lord Matlock’s nefarious schemes behind the scenes, and the appearance of Lord and Lady Devondale at the opera all add up to a wonderful read full of angst and romance, after the fact, in a MARRIAGE. Who is it who said, “…to start as you mean to go?”

(Politics of that era come into play – but read to find out just how important that part is.)

RAMSGATE: We go back to the scene of Wickham’s and Mrs. Younge’s attempts to gain control of Georgiana’s dowry. But they didn’t plan on certain families, the Bennets and the Gardiners, also vacationing, next door, in Ramsgate. Without saying too much…you must read of the role ODG plays in helping to rescue Georgiana and consequences when her guardians show up. Darcy just can’t let go of those opinions about society and appropriate levels AGAIN despite the stirrings of his heart. Then, the scene on the boardwalk is so laughable. Going out for ices and the subsequent “dance” as ladies vie for position on the arms of one or another escort! You must smile here.

The Bennets, the Gardiners, Bingley with his sisters, Lord and Lady Sternhaven and their daughter, Olivia, Colonel Fitzwilliam and Lady Catherine all make appearances and play parts, large or small.

I read this beginning late one evening and then over the course of the next morning. I am still smiling with pleasure. ...more

Wonderful -- three JAFF stories in one! I particularly loved the novel-length one which included Elizabeth's interference with Wickham's plans at Ramsgate and dealt with the issue of slavery--fascinating and heartfelt.

Absolutely delightful!!!

To start with, J Dawn King is an absolutely delightful writer!!! This is her second book, and I love this one as much as her first, "A Father's Sins". Mrs King knows how to draw you in, in constant want for more, but she also leaves a lot to the readers imagination. She knows how to write that perfect balance.

In "One Love - Two Hearts - Three Stories," we see 3 different options for how Elizabeth and Darcy meet and marry.

1. The Library - what if Darcy could not help Absolutely delightful!!!

To start with, J Dawn King is an absolutely delightful writer!!! This is her second book, and I love this one as much as her first, "A Father's Sins". Mrs King knows how to draw you in, in constant want for more, but she also leaves a lot to the readers imagination. She knows how to write that perfect balance.

In "One Love - Two Hearts - Three Stories," we see 3 different options for how Elizabeth and Darcy meet and marry.

1. The Library - what if Darcy could not help himself from looking - staring - at Elizabeth more than propriety allowed? What if they talked things through? What if Caroline was so clueless yet so brazen? (LOL had to throw that one in there!! Haha!). I loved this short story. It shows how flawed ODC really is and how arrogant and prejudiced they BOTH were. I loved the fact that they held a conversation and put things on the table!!! Well done!!

2. Married! - what if during the elopement, Elizabeth was on the same coach as Wickham, Georgiana, and Mrs Younge? What if Elizabeth was summoned home as the prospective bride of the slimy Mr Collins? This is a more full-length story, and very delightful in how Elizabeth and Darcy meet. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, it had just the right amount of angst that I wasn't a nervous wreck, but enough that it wasn't boring. Some may say it was to quick with the emotions and attachment of ODC, but that is the prerogative of the writer. This is not exactly canon, but it is in a way. I actually enjoyed the stubborn and entitled Georgiana struggling to understand how her decisions have consequences, and how Elizabeth is amazing with the reformation of Georgiana. I always felt she got off too easy in regards to her near elopement with Wickham.

3. Ramsgate - what if the Gardiners and Bennet's were in Ramsgate at the same time as Georgiana? What if Georigana fell fast in friendship with Elizabeth? This story was short but sweet. It starts with Elizabeth and Georgiana becoming fast friends while vacationing in Ramsgate. With this friendship, Georgiana finds she has someone to turn to when she finds things aren't as they seem. With Elizabeth's guidance and support, Georgiana sums Darcy to Ramsgate. Again some may not like the short but sweet, but I loved this story, it was refreshing to see Darcy not struggle so much with his affections, and to have the support of Colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana.

All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any and all JAFFer, especially if you are in the need for a D&E book with reduced angst!!!! I look forward to what else the talented J Dawn King publishes in the future, she has a devoted reader in me!!!! ...more

The one thing readers of JAFF have always wanted was more face time with ODC [our dear couple]. In this short story by J. Dawn King we have that. The reader was witness to a window of time when Elizabeth and Darcy are in the Netherfield library during the time Elizabeth helped care for Jane during her illness.

Austenesque anthologies seem to be all the rage at the moment! I love that authors are writing Austenesque-inspired short stories, and novellas – not every plot bunny can be fleshed out into a full-length novel! I will have to go back through the audio version to see if I can find the other two stories. Until then, this is Ramsgate...

This was an alternate Pride and Prejudice story, audio version.
It was an utter surprise to me. I'm aware of, and have even read other books like this, where they take a classic and tell another story within it. But this one changed the original so much that there was no comparison. Character names are the same, but that's about it.

In it Charlotte (Mr. Darcy's sister) has placed herself in a socially compromising posisituation, about which Elizabeth Bennet writes to Mr. Darcy to rescue his sister. The end result is Richard, Darcy's cousin, in some convoluted plot, convinces Elizabeth and Darcy to marry which will give another story to Charlotte's scandal, making it not such a social fopaux which could have ruined the Darcy name. It was odd and confusing, but everybody agreed with it, albeit reluctantly.

So this starts their marriage, which was at first difficult because her station in life was far enough below his to raise some eyebrows. But as they become "passionate", and he becomes aware of her intelligence and wit, he begins to feel she's a worthy spouse.

Meanwhile Elizabeth has to discipline 15 year old Charlotte (her new sister-in-law) for her lack of wisdom, and for the consequences that changed the futures of many around her. She was to learn how to be a housekeeper. If she had been caught with Wickham, and had to marry him, she would have been a wife without the income with which she's always been accustomed. There really was only one lesson mentioned that I can recall, and that was how to make lemon tarts.

There were continual references to intimacies, which is also quite unlike Jane Austin's work. None were graphic, just that the reader is aware they are going off to, well, you get the idea... or public displays of affection, (hugs, etc.) which was also just not done in polite society in this era.

Nothing with a spiritual element at all that I can recall. No church, no praying, no references to God.

Other than the narrator, who was quite good, I can't really recommend it. ...more

I enjoyed all 3 stories immensely. There is something about the author’s writing style. It resonates in my head. I don’t think of anything else but the story. And they are hard to put down.

I recommend this book highly.

Great short stories, that left me wanting for more. All three of them have D&E relationship progress quickly, without majority of canon misunderstandings and angst. Luckily, J. Dawn King writes her short stories in such a way, that they don't suffer too much from their length.

Two Ramsgate stories are my favorite, I love Elizabeth disturbing Wickham's plans. With many entertaining original characters, and plenty of humor, they are a delight to read.

One Love – Two Hearts – Three Stories by J Dawn King

The title of the latest release by J Dawn King, One Love – Two Hearts – Three Stories, is perfect for this book and I do love it. All three stories are about Darcy and Elizabeth. One of the things that I fancy best about them is that each story has much time with Darcy and Lizzy in company. Add to their together time, an extremely good plot and you have some fine reading. It does not get much better than that.

The first short story is ‘The One Love – Two Hearts – Three Stories by J Dawn King

The title of the latest release by J Dawn King, One Love – Two Hearts – Three Stories, is perfect for this book and I do love it. All three stories are about Darcy and Elizabeth. One of the things that I fancy best about them is that each story has much time with Darcy and Lizzy in company. Add to their together time, an extremely good plot and you have some fine reading. It does not get much better than that.

The first short story is ‘The Library’. It takes place at Netherfield Park when Elizabeth is there to care for Jane. The author took this instance from Pride and Prejudice and elaborated on it. She gave it her spin with a great ‘what could have happened’. Then there was the footman who stood guard at the library door. He was a likable character and his role added a fun dimension. ‘The Library’ was a charming variation that I much enjoyed.

‘Married!’ is the second story and it is a full length book. I must say that I adored this one. Darcy is wonderful and made me love him all the more. Lizzy is true to character and lovely too. Mr. Gardiner, Lady Matlock and Colonel Fitzwilliam are three of my favorites as supporting cast, although the Colonel does play a larger role. Lord Matlock and Lady Catherine are two peas in a pod and a despicable pair at that. Georgiana is a spoiled teenager but does have some endearing qualities. She grows under the careful tutelage of Lady Matlock and her new sister.

In one part of the story, Colonel Fitzwilliam is watching a scene between Darcy, Elizabeth and the ever distasteful Mr. Collins. Following are his thoughts…’He watched Darcy and Elizabeth stand as one against the pompous pimple. Yes, it would be a great partnership.’ I laughed at that suitable description of Mr. Collins. Pompous pimple, indeed!

There are so many brilliant parts to ‘Married!’ and I highly recommend reading it. It is wonderful to read the scenes where Darcy and Lizzy are growing closer and falling in love. All does not run smoothly but that makes the path to happily ever after all the more deserving. Oh, but one of the most delicious scenes was when Caroline Bingley discovered that Elizabeth was Mrs. Darcy. I had to reread that one several times to savor the moment! Well done, Ms. King!

The last of the three and a short story, is ‘Ramsgate’. The interesting twist to this plot is that the Bennets and the Gardiners are in Ramsgate and meet Georgiana Darcy. As one would assume, George Wickham and Mrs. Younge are also there but that is where the similarities to the happenings at Ramsgate end. It is entertaining to watch Darcy and Elizabeth getting acquainted and to see how different their relationship is in this ‘what-if’.

“Elizabeth Bennet was impertinent and Darcy’s heart was lost. His will was like iron, hardened by adversity and fire. His heart was virginal, untouched by tender thoughts of any woman, until today.” I love those lines in ‘Ramsgate’! Such an apt description of Fitzwilliam Darcy.

These stories are full of romance and some angst, but mostly overall good feelings. The plots move along and hold interest throughout. They are well told and well written. I didn’t want to put the book down and hated for each story to end. Anyone that enjoys reading Pride and Prejudice retellings and variations will treasure this book. Thank you, J Dawn King, for a very good read.

This is book with two very short but enjoyable stories and one longer and wonderfully busy story. This book is clean and fairly angst free.

The first story The Library is what convinced me to buy. It is a unique spin on Darcy and Lizzy in the Netherfield library where all is explained and love can blossom.

The Second has Darcy & Lizzy marrying to cover up Georgiana's attempted elopement. This is a little more angsty and dramatic. There are plenty of twists and turns Miss Austen never ...more

I loved the three stories....2 short Novellas and one full length story. Joy writes in a way that has some angst, but not too much.

The first (novella): The Library is what if Elizabeth and Darcy had talked while Jane was at Netherfield.

The second: (full length novel): Married is when Elizabeth is called home from the Gardner's to marry Mr. Collins.

The third (novella): Ramsgate shows how Elizabeth helps Georgiana in a time of need

So I started out really liking the first short story, until IT WENT SO FAST! Like a lot happen in the library! Then I started out with the second, much longer story, and it was pretty good, something I hadn't read before AND THEN IT WENT TOO FAST WITH TOO MUCH GOING ON! By the time I got to the third story I knew exactly what I was in for but still was like WHO IS THIS FAST AND FURIOUS DARCY!?

If you like your stories tied up tout suite this is a great collection of three!

Since this book has three different stories I will be looking at each story individually.

The Library - This is a cute little story. The main premise of it is Darcy declaring his love way before Hunsford in the Netherfield library. The only thing that gets me is that Elizabeth at one point tells him that she doesn't love him but by the time they leave the library she's in love with him. 3 stories that are pretty decent length in themselves give us a different take on the story of Elizabeth and Darcy.
The first story takes place during that time that they spent alone in the library at Netherfield. What if they conversed instead of sitting in silence? Elizabeth gets to know real Darcy. Although I think the progression of their relationship over one conversation is too fast it was a cute happy story that made me laugh especially at Caroline's expense!

- Married - Miss Darcy elopes with Wickham and Mrs Younge in a coach heading north through Meryton. Also travelling with them is Miss Elizabeth Bennet who becomes concerned for the welfare of Miss Darcy.
- Ramsgate - what if the Gardiners and the Bennets met and befriend Miss Darcy while Wickham is in Ramsgate.
Enjoyed all three stories and wanted them to be longer.

These were easy light and fun

Once in a while you want a light read. And that's exactly what these three stories were . Nothing too heavy but very much enjoyed. Thank goodness for fan fiction. Jane Austen can live on forever and write on it as well. I hope to read other works by these three authors in the future

I feared we were off to a bad start when the first of the three stories had headed into Darcy's inappropriate thoughts about Lizzy's body parts. Nothing bores me quicker than that. I much prefer his attraction to her fine eyes and quick wit. I thought about just closing the book up at page 6 but decided to give it a little more of a chance. Luckily the rest of the book didn't follow this path which lead me to wonder why it was even included in the first place? It was so totally unnecessary.

I'd probably rate this at a 3 overall but I really liked the middle story up to a 4. Balance it out to a 3.5 average.

The first story, The Library, and last, Ramsgate, were nice but definitely on the shorter side which left me wishing they were just a bit more fleshed out. Married! was the longest and that let me get more from it which added a lot of enjoyment. Obviously none of the premises were new but I do appreciate the care and detail that King adds to each.

Interesting variations of pride and prejudice

A collection of three different versions of pride and prejudice. The stories were not unnecessary long or tedious. I have read many pride and prejudice versions but thus book managed to introduce new twists to the subject matter. I enjoyed reading all three tales.

Nice story

It's been a while since I've read Austen's Pride and Prejudice so it took me a while to get reacquainted with the characters. This was a fun addition to the original story and I'm glad I found it.

Of the three works in this set Married! was my favorite. The Library was fun (I think that is the first time I have ever felt sorry for Caroline Bingley). Ramsgate was cute but everyone outside of Elizabeth and Jane felt a tad OOC.

Enjoyed all three

These were good variations of P&P. The second left me a little uncomfortable with the portrayal of Darcy's sister. I recommend this book.
