After having her heart broken on her wedding day, Carson Breaux flees her New Orleans home for the bright lights of Seattle. Determined to start over and finally pursue her own dreams for once, Carson spends years working towards her goals.
When a car accident takes her best friend LuAnne, Carson finds herself the guardian of LuAnne's five-year old little girl, Landry. Between mourning the loss of her dearest friend, raising Landry, and trying to get justice for Lu, her life becomes a whirlwind of drama.
Kyler Richards grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, although he worked hard to accomplish his own goals. He meets Carson during a brief encounter but can't shake the pull he feels to her. The friendship between the two quickly becomes the potential for more but when Carson’s life is turned upside down by the accident, both their worlds are torn apart.
Can their relationship survive everything that’s thrown at them?
**Author’s Note** Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.
Enjoyable, but I felt like it was really rushed at the end. I didnt feel like the book was primarily romance. It followed the h's struggles (which were plenty) and the relationship between the H and h felt to me like it was kind of a side note. It had angst, suspense, a little steam, and a little romance. I feel like it would've been nice to have more about their relationship, though I did appreciate that they didn't jump to "I love you" right away unlike many stories do.
Carson's heart is broke by the betrayal of those closest to us right before her high society New Orleans wedding to Chris, her childhood sweetheart. She leaves after letting those closest to her know she will never forgive what they have done to her.
Fast forward 5 years later and Carson bartends while she finishes up at Culinary school. She is best friends with Luanne and Luanne's 5 year old precious daughter. She meets a hot, mysterious guy at the bar one night and they start some harmless flirting. But the same night, she butted heads with a real asshot, Jerrod, who is more than a little unstable.
Luanne's car is run off the road and she is killed; Carson is hurt and Landry is unharmed. But there is devastation left behind. The mystery guy, Kyler has proven to be a rock for Carson. But she is dealing with so much, Jerrod is threatening her, her best friend is dead and the custody of Landry is up in the air. And then the bombshell hits...and Landry's father is revealed and Carson is left reeling.
This one has it all-romance, suspense, intrigue, betrayal, redemption and eventually-forgiveness..
Raising Landry is one of those books that make you feel good about people and that maybe fate is something real. We have all been in that place when life just defeats you and knocks you straight on your ass. When Carson finds herself running she never knew she would be running towards her future. I think we are all nervous taking a chance on a new author, but I think taking a chance on Ms. Michelle would bring a story into your life full of love, hope and happily ever after.
Carson is strong and opinionated, I think that is what first made me feel a kinship to her. She didn’t take no shit and walked away from a situation that was toxic. The thing that really made drawn to her was that when Kyler wouldn’t take no for an answer she embraced it and didn’t run from it. I just knew that Kyler was going to be the rock of the story the glue that holds them all together when all they really want to do is break.
I can’t wait to see what Ms. Michelle has in store for us next. This story was well thought out and flowed so well. I hope to see this author explore her creative mind as with this book for a first release I think there is so much potential to bring to life.
Andee Michelle's debut novel brought together Carson, Landry and Kyler in a bittersweet (yes, there's some heat, too) standalone contemporary romance. When an enraged man causes the death of Carson's best friend and a single mom, LuLu, in a car crash, there's a little girl left without parents. Carson is appointed as her guardian and the storyline takes on not only a romantic but one with a bit of suspense as well. I really liked the journey this author took readers on and for a first book, she did a good job of it. It certainly had some weak spots and a few areas that I felt could have used a little more depth, but for the most part I truly enjoyed reading this one.
I binged on this author's books after reading Slam during the weekend so I'm looking forward to reading more from her. 👍🏻
I liked the heroine but really woman? I guess she was trying to be the "biggest person" with her forgiving her cheating a**hole of a fiance and her cousin, COUSIN, her blood.. People, her best friend, the one who she grew up with. Yeah no sorry honey I wouldn't have forgiven her and him. Nope Nope Nope.
Hero was ok I guess, I didn't like how he acted when he saw the heroine talking with her ex cheating a**. Cute kid, I loved the heroine's relationship with her.
Debut novel that I really loved. Little more telling than showing but otherwise I see great things from Andee Michelle. On what is suppose be her greatest day Carson Breaux is betrayed by almost everyone she loves. Her fiancée, her cousin who is her best friend, he parents...she is hurt so deeply that this is the final straw and leaves her home in NOLA and cuts them all off. Now she is living in Seattle, graduating culinary school soon and ready to open her own dream restaurant. While at work she meets 2 completely different men. Jerrod who is a rich, entailed douche living off his daddy's money. She put him in his place and he doesnt take that too well.
Next we have Kyler. He gives her the feels something that hasnt happened in the 6 years she has been living in Seattle. With finals and life in general being busy they exchange numbers when they see each other again. Become friends through texting and calls. A date is set but it wont happen cause tragedy is about to strike.
Lulu, Carson and Landry, Lu's 5 yr old deaf daughter are in a tragic traffic accident that claims Lu's life, severely injures Carson and throws her world into upheavel. When a 'jilted' Kyler learns why he was stood up he rushes to her aid and the two grow close but then twist and turns begin and this story really gets interesting!!!
What a great 1st novel. I wish it felt more "show me" than "tell me". As an avid reader I see that a lot with 1st time novelist but a first novel like this shows me this is a writer, an author, someone to be watched
I'm sorry but did that really just happen!!!! Wdf :O I get all the forgiveness mumbo jumbo but did that cheating ho (Jenna) really just say she wanted to make it clear to Carson that that's her man :O !!!! Omg I can serious cut a bitch right now!!!! She Was the one who BETRAYED HER FAMILY ,HER OWN FLESH AND BLOOD !!!! She even knew in the beginning but didn't even stop to think about what she was going to lose and thereafter lied to everyone saying it was a goddamn drunken mistake :|!!! I can still feel my blood boiling towards that skank!! I'm sorry but she deserves no frikken curtesy or fucking forgiveness for that matter Grrrrrrrrr !!!!
And Carson my god she should be petty just once and just freeze them out cause it's nothing less than they deserve, why the ever loving fuck should she be hug her and blah blah blah for ripping her life apart!!!! Everything ended good but wdf serioussssssly there was a better way of doing it then cheating and lying for so long and separating loved ones. Carson couldn't even be there for her father because of their betrayal and I'm sorry if it makes me a bad human being but I'd hold it against them till I was six feet under and not be all happy chappy I couldn't be with the only parent I loved dearly when he was dying because of their whoring ways!!! The man was dying and because of them and what they made him do he couldn't be with Carson !!!!!!!! I love my parents and if someone did something like that I'd go all hurricane Katrina on their ass. They didn't deserve happiness after what they did and I'm not saying that as a woman scorned but I have firm value on cheating and betraying and what was written in this book seriously pissed me off. They're weren't even sorry I mean why did Jen rub it in Carsons face about her getting some , she felt no remorse or guilt about what she did and Chris he slept with both of them , they should've both been worried about whether he was going to give them some sort of std! They can cheat around but not have the guts to speak to Carson and apologize if they so called "loved" her so much??? Yeah total bullshit.
And Luanne what the heck!!! She didn't tell him about his kid cause she was so goddamn selfish and didn't wanna complicate sh1t with her bf at the time and her baby's father!!! What kind of person is that selfish and only thinks of herself !!!???
I really thought it was going to take more time for ky and Carson to be together since he told her it's not their time and when they didn't take more time it disappointed me, there should've been more scenes as a family, growing together and other stuff but sadly none of that happened.
I really wish I never came across this book there's no words to describe how angry I am :e
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book was good I enjoyed the journey of Carson after being devastated by the people closest to her she has to learn how to survive on her own and she does it spectacularly with the help of some real friends Lu and her daughter Landry and the awesome Kyler I guessed the twist early on it takes a big person to forgive cause I know I never would so Carson was definitely a good person I'm glad her mom got what she deserved and it was emotional with Carsons dad and jarrod got what he deserved to thank god lovely HEA great epilogue
Great book, loved the story line. The story line had me hooked from beginning to end. All the characters were perfect in this story and blended together perfectly.
The book starts off with a bang as far as setting the stage for what Carson goes through that forces her to leave her hometown of New Orleans and relocate to Seattle. I had to see how she was going to pick herself up and start over elsewhere. From there, I had trouble connecting with her as well as the rest of the characters because they fell flat for me, including the hero. The storyline is predictable as far as any twists are concerned. There's also a sideline suspense portion that felt over the top and just an accessory for added drama. But I can appreciate the underlying messages that the author tried to convey and how it helped the characters to mature and grow.
This book was nothing like what I was expecting. From the blurb alone I was expecting an angsty story about a woman struggling to raise a child that was not her own, I was pleasantly surprised to discover it was actually romantic suspense. The plot was a little bit predictable in parts and did drag occasionally in places but overall I really enjoyed it and will definitely look at reading another book by Andee
I debated between 3 and 4. I liked some parts of the story, but some things annoyed me. Nevertheless I need to admit, that this author writes excellent heroines, of course for my taste. I floved Slam, and after that brilliant, amazing book I decided to check author’s previous stories.
This one was a debut. Really? Respect! Extremely good for a debut novel, high five!
What I liked - likable strong sassy heroine. I admired her strength after her fiancé cheated on her with her cousin/her bff. This side story, which unfortunately ended with IMO unnecessary forgiving fest, made me so mad at the end!
---> The heroine forgave her ex and his wife/her cousin – it was ok; h wanted to get a closure and despite me being not a forgiving person, I could understand her intentions. BUT, as she started to spread lines like: I knew they were meant to be together. I knew he didn’t love me enough. I knew she was his mate. And so on. REALLY??? Girl, the a$$ cheated on you with your friend, got her pregnant and wanted to marry you anyway, because you, dumbass, would understand and forgive him apparently. REALLY??? He cheated on you and you not only forgave him, but also wished him luck? Aaaaaaa, so NOT my story… *grr* Don’t let me start with the cousin, the girl h’s fiancé cheated with and later married. She loved her husband… REALLY??? This man cheated with you on your friend, wanted to marry your friend despite you were pregnant and you still forgave him, married him and gave him 2 children? Aaaaaaa, so NOT my vision of life… *uhg* Phew, sorry for my outburst, but this side of the story made me furious! I hated that they gave these 2 cheaters a HEA. They didn’t deserve any happiness.
No good relationship can be built on the ruin of another one!
As to the story itself, I liked the heroine. I didn’t always supported her decisions, but I could relate to her. I didn’t blame her for stalker/incident drama. Though it was OTT.
Loved the small girl. Adorable kid.
I wasn’t a fan of a trope secret-baby-hello-daddy. Heroine’s BFF/mother of the Laudry kept her pregnancy and daughter secret. Like in a good soap opera the hero turned out to be the father. I liked that he met the heroine before the drama happened, so I can honestly say, that the girl wasn’t the only reason these two came together.
I didn’t like the hero a lot. I lost him after the scene, when he induced h’s panic attack and then just did nothing as he couldn’t find her at home (she was at the hospital). He did nothing! She had a stalker and he didn’t even call the police! The h found him sleeping on the couch when she came home.
He wasn’t a bad guy and I’m sure many readers would see him as fully redeemable and he somehow was… But I’m well known for holding a mean grudge *lol*
Overall the book was very interesting and well written. I can stomach much as long as I have a strong decent heroine.
But Slam was MUCH BETTER for me!!! The author made a brilliant job. Looking forward to her next books!
This was a really good book. Caron Breaux leaves her New Orleans home and all her family and loved ones for Seattle. She's a bartender for work and she's finishing school at a Culinary School. One night she meets a complete douchebag at the bar but also she meets another gorgeous and hot man. She gets in a car accident with her best friend and her best friend's daughter and her best friend LuAnne is killed.
Carson grew up with a father that loved her greatly and a mother that had more interest in spending her father's money and such. She was set to marry her best friend and her father's law partner's son when she overhears that he cheated on her with her best friend and cousin and got her pregnant. Her parents knew and didn't try to warn her. She feels deeply betrayed and leaves New Orleans to maker her own life. She moves to Seattle and makes a wonderful friend and starts her life how she wants it. She has a trust fund but she hasn't touched it because she plans to use it to open and create her dream restaurant. She loves to cook and wants to share that with the world. Her best friend, LuAnne, has a child but Carson is like a second mother to the little girl. Landry when she was a baby got sick and now is deaf. She meets a crazy and horrible douchebag one night at the bar that seems to be the son of the owner. He thinks he's better than everyone else and sets out to hurt her for disrespecting him. He's the cause of the car accident and LuAnne's death.
Kyler Richards is a wonderful and gorgeous man. He grew up rich but he also has worked long and hard to be a good CEO. He meets her at the bar that she bartends at and is instantly pulled toward her. He doesn't know what it is but he wants to know her. They start talking as friends to get to know one another so he kind of keeps his name out of it for a little while. He doesn't want her to just want him for his money but to care about him for being him.
Most Blissful Novel I Have Ever Read In My Life. No Doubt.
I will say that I had doubts starting another romantic novel because the ones I have be reading lately just suck basically, but let me tell you that this book, is the best book I have ever read. Never in my life have I had my emotions pulled in every which way in a book. I cried as much as when I saw the ending of The Notebook for the very first time. I even laughed more than I ever thought was possible, from this book (which kinda earned me a "shut the fuck up and go to sleep you bookaholic" I totally deserved it though because I read this book until 5:30 in the morning.)Non stop. I couldn't put the bloody book down!! Andee Michelle, you are literally now my favorite author. Literally blogging that shit and tweeting it. No shame. I believe now, without a doubt, that I will never read a book as good as this, ever again in my LIFETIME! So, ignore all those haters on the review (cuz I mean, we all know that is horseshit anyway) AND BUY THIS BOOK. RIGHT NOW. I WANT MOREEEEEE!!!
This is a story of developing romance, suspense, hardship and challenges which still manages to be a beautiful story. After a car accident kills her best friend, Carson becomes legal guardian to her best friend's deaf 5 year old daughter that she helped raise. All of this happens immediately after she meets and starts getting to know Kyler, who both feel an immediate connection with each other. Kyler is determined to be with her, but she's now a packaged deal and he finds out details re: the accident that will change his life forever. After a few bumps in the road, Kyler proves he is a stand-up guy and wants Carson and the little girl she's raising in his life. That is if the reason for the car accident doesn't get in the way of their happy ending. I've said enough!! This is a very enjoyable read, a standalone with an HEA. What's even more impressed is this is the author's debut book and I'll gladly read any future books written from her!
Again, I debated a three and four star rating. I'd probably give it 3.5 if we had that option. My problem was without knowing that it was a debut novel, I could tell it early on. It flowed nicely, and there were minimal errors with grammar. The storyline was inventive and interesting. The male lead was lovable.
However, there were areas where the newness of the author showed. It was predictable, but I don't think the author intended for it not to be. Some of the dialogue was stilted. There were some dragging, unnecessary details. The female lead gave me whiplash wavering between weak and strong in her reactions to certain events.
Did all this detract from the story? Not enough to make it a bad read.
Holy emotional rollercoaster! This book will put you through the ringer but the ride is worth it. There are plenty of laughs and scenes to make you hot, give you the warm & fuzzies, and shed a tear in empathy for the curve balls that life throws at Carson (The main character, story told from her perspective). This book is perfect for a curling up in a comfy chair on a rainy day with a cup of hot cocoa. It's also a sit down and read-it-all-at-once kind of book so clear your schedule and make time for this heart-warming read with a touch of suspense to keep you changing the pages. A spectacular debut from Ms. Michelle!
This book is a standalone, and although there are many ups and down, twists and turns, it triumphantly ends with a happily ever after.
loved this book. From the very first page, she has you hooked! This book has it all, from drama to romance (but not over doing it) to suspense. The main character, Carson, is very independent and strong. She doesn't take crap from anyone but at the same time is very loving and loyal. You get introduced to each character and have time to fall in love with each of them, which is so refreshing to read after having read a dozen books where boy and girl see each other and its instant love. There is a lot of things that happen during the course of this book to Carson and she still stays strong and uses her head. I would highly recommend this book and I can't wait for more books from this author!
I will start by saying I enjoyed this story. Overall the book was good. I will say it was pretty predictable; however, I also have read what feels like a million romance novels and I started to feel like I had already read this story before. I knew I hadn't buy pieces were very similar to other books I've read.
I do love the characters though and it was an interesting twist of fate for a change. I whipped through this book really fast, so I clearly still enjoyed it even though it felt familiar.
Just finished this story! It was beyond amazing and such a beautiful story!! I loved everything about it. It was such a feel good story. The main character Carson has so much strength from everything life throws her way. She just keeps on keeping on! From the moment I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. If you want a story that grabs your heart and doesn't let go, then This book is for you. I cannot wait for more from this new author.
Absolutely loved Carson! My heart broke so many times in this book for her yet she never gave up. And Landry, I just wanted to pick that little girl up and hug and kiss her and never let her go. You could feel Carson's love for her seep through the pages and the you have sweet Kyler! The instant love he had for Landry.....heart melting! So glad I picked this book up. Thanks for an awesome read Andee Michelle!
This was a great debut book! I really enjoyed reading the story of Carson. It was definitely heartbreaking at times, and at others kept you on the edge of your seat with suspense. I loved Landry & Kyler and was not expecting the twists in this book. I look forward to reading more by this author as she's off to a great start!
This was a sweet book. I adore books with children and reading about men who fall in love with those littles, regardless of whose child it is. {who doesn't love a man who loves children?}
I will say this story was fairly predictable and the added drama was kind of unnecessary, but I enjoyed reading about Carson, Kyler, and sweet little Landry!
I gave it a 2.5 stars. I liked the concept of the story but it was hard to connect with the couple. It felt like I was just being told their story instead of experiencing it with them. A lot of wordy paragraphs that really didn't add to the story but then it was rushed when there was actually things happening.
6 months into the new year i finally find a new author that gets my attention, amazing first book, great characters, great story flow, lots of heart. looking forward to more from this author. by far one of my fav books of 2015 so far. well done.
