Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.
The Adventure of The Sussex Vampire by Conan Doyle
Yesterday, I have read in The Economist about the Sherlock Holmes copyright in America. A lawsuit has reached its end and it seems that Sherlock Holmes is in the public domain. This is what regularly happens after 75 years and various other timelines depending on the situation of the author: is he still alive and so on.
Conan Doyle was a very good writer and I have come to appreciate him more, as I learn more about his work. He is included with The Hound of The Baskervilles on the list of best books written.
The story of The Sussex Vampire has intrigued me from the start. In fact, the very name is weird for a respectable author of crime stories, who has created a reputable detective known around the world for solving tough cases of murder and not looking for vampires.
And yet, even after we start reading the mystery and the feeling that something supernatural is going on are still there.
This woman, who comes from a very different culture, seems to attack her babies and drink blood from them in the manner of…vampires.
The only question left to answer to is what happened to her?
Is she crazy? Or just “high” on some drugs or potion?
Because the reader does not envisage any other possible explanation-
There are witnesses; there is no doubt about the authenticity of the report.
The husband who has asked for the help of Holmes has seen the woman himself, after doubting reports from the baby sitter and expressing his wish to fire her, there was a terrible cry-
They rushed to see what happened and the mother was leaning over her baby, with blood at her mouth.
To complicate things further, the dog of the family fell sick with a kind of paralysis.
The great detective has found the answer to the supernatural puzzle and we are surprised of course. There is no intention to reveal anything on the matter and you can try and find for yourself, after reading the story.
Who doesn’t like a good vampire story? Holmes the ever sceptic, steps in to investigate. By following the plot and Holmes’ logic, part of the way through this story, it is pretty easy to see what is going to happen and the culprit of this story. Still a pretty good story nonetheless.
This is not the typical Sherlock Holmes story where everything is before you and you just didn't see it, but rather a mystery is presented because people are not acting normally.
The plot in this one is very near to being a masterpiece. Its so interesting and engaging. Which makes it super hard to stop reading it.
A part of me wish that this one never ended because I completely loved it. This one really shows why Sherlock Holmes and sir Arthur Conan Doyle deserve their spot in hall of fame of literature.
The characters here are okay but when it comes to Sherlock Holmes and doctor Watson they are an amazing due and I loved they both because they have something in them which makes us relate to them.
The writing style here was amazing and really shows how good author sir Arthur Conan Doyle was.

After reading The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire, a short story featuring the legendary Sherlock Holmes, it is hard to believe that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a spiritualist. It actually sounds like he was anything but, openly mocking the occult and anything to do with it in this very Halloween-like tale.
In it, Sherlock Holmes must use his detective skills to solve the mysterious circumstances surrounding one family living in the title district of England. A husband suspects his wife of being a vampire after seeing her “draw blood” by mouth from their infant’s neck. As always, Holmes and Dr. Watson find more sinister motives beneath the appearances of normalcy and tracks down the real cause of the incident.
Swift and to the point, Doyle laughs at the very idea of vampires and the notion that someone would have to survive on blood to remain immortal. As always, Doyle demonstrates that there is a reasonable explanation behind everything and that nothing is coincidental. Displaying Holmes’ signature intelligence together with Watson’s romantic overview, this rare analysis of the supernatural within the canon of Sherlock Holmes stories and novels is witty and mysterious, suspenseful and appropriately eerie.
