Freda White, author of the celebrated Three Rivers of France: Dordogne, Lot, Tarn, has written a delightful new guide to the old provinces and mountainous area west of the Rhone - Languedoc, Roussillon, and the Massif Central - together with towns on the east bank such as Provençal Arles, Tarascon, and Avignon. These regions are very varied, ranging from the valley of the great river to the wine-plains of the Midi, and the great grassy mountains of Auvergne. They are full of interesting things, the monuments of Roman Gaul, the abbeys of the Middle Ages, the strange atmosphere of the Camargue.
Miss White intends the book to serve the traveller unfamiliar with the country by giving an account of the main routes to follow and the finest things to see, and bases her descriptions on the geography and history which have made them what they are. This background lies behind and explains the modern civilization of Southern France: of which every part has its especial character.
The book includes a detailed map in colour, numerous attractive illustrations, and information on methods of travel and places to stay. West of the Rhone is written with all the sympathetic discernment one would expect of the author of Three Rivers of France, that classic among modern travel guides.

Het is voor mij onmogelijk om West of the Rhone (1964) van Freda White niet te vergelijken met
Fastness of France
(1962) van Bryan Morgan. Allebei willen ze immers Britse toeristen een stukje Frankrijk laten ontdekken. Het sterkste punt van Morgan was zijn systematische beschrijving van plaatsen en wegen. Ook White bood haar lezer dat, maar minder uitgewerkt. Zowel Morgan als White vinden bijvoorbeeld de industriestad Saint-Etienne een vreselijke plek: White schrijft niet meer dan dat, maar Morgan probeert toch de stad te typeren.
Waar White echter in uitblonk, was haar persoonlijke aanpak. Als zij vertelt (of fantaseert!), geniet de lezer. Dat deed ik toch. Haar beschrijving van een ontmoeting met enkele wijnboeren is misschien wel één van de leukste dingen die ik ooit las. Ook het laatste hoofdstuk ('Bed and Board') is uiterst bijzonder, door de directheid van het advies dat erin wordt gegeven. Doorheen heel het boek was White hoe dan ook gul met goede raad. White, die zich op het schrijven van reisboeken toelegde na een leven als vredesactivist, was een vrouw vol meningen én vol innemendheid. 'Armchair travel' op z'n best!
