Strings is my first book by Darren Gallagher and it certainly won't be the last. 33 short stories just didn't seem like enough.
"Ruby Red Slippers" was a killer of an opening. A supernatural story of how we are all connected and how evil tries to tap into that connection."

"A Hiker's Life" had me yelling at the book trying to come to the rescue. Well wasn't I fooled!

"Kumari" is a tale that has been told many times in different ways. What I take from stories like these is don't underestimate a child and always have faith in their abilities.

"A Walk To Remember" most of us at some point in our lives would jump at the idea of being able to meet a fairy. Throw in a dog and you have a five star story!

"There's Only One Good Thing About Halloween, The Pies" I was super excited to read this story being the season and it was the best Halloween story I've read in a long time. Yes, it was predictable but so much fun!

"Christmas Trees Are More Than Just An Object" a normal family outing to pick the year's Christmas tree but there are so many to choose from. The tree of choice has left me with so many questions my head is still reeling.

"A Secret Revealed At The End" perfect choice for the last story. Such a beautiful and well written tale.

Such an exciting bunch of stories and all unique in there own way - be it supernatural, vampires, werewolves, faries, monsters, ghosts - each story had me enraptured and excited to see where it would lead.

I read this book in a readalong with a great group of girls and was lucky enough to have won the book in a giveaway by Darren Gallagher.
This has not swayed my review.

I highly recommend this book to lovers of short stories and dark fiction.

This collection of 33 stories was one hell of a fun ride. If you’re in a reading slump, and need something to spark up the pleasure of reading, look no further. Fast and fun, I think the longest story is ten pages. They are short but pack a punch. I’m looking forward to more from this author!!!

I liked the stories very much. Some weren't that scary but got me hooked and I needed to know more and still do..so much more like I think there should be a next chapter.
All the stories were so different and I think that everyone will find something they will like.

I really enjoyed Strings, it consisted of 33 short stories covering a wide range of topics. I was in THE WORST slump before I started this collection and I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to shake it, this book definitely helped me out. The stories were short but they packed a serious punch.

Every story in this collection was super fun and fast paced! I had a really hard time reading just one and putting the book down. If you’re in the mood for creepy insects, vampires, werewolves, fairies or ghosts plus much more, you will love this collection. Gallagher has such an incredible imagination and he takes you on a wild ride.

There were a couple stories that I wish were maybe a tad longer and didn’t end so abruptly, but that’s my only critique.

These stories have the perfect amount of creep factor. Some had my hair standing up on end and my skin crawling. I was captivated by each story and I didn’t want to put it down. I will definitely be reading more of Gallagher’s work.

Strings by Darren Gallagher is a collection of 33 mostly scary short stories spanning different eras, worlds, themes and places. The stories encompass a variety of topics ranging from vampires and werewolves to swarms of spiders, to newly-made up creatures to cowboys even.
‘Ruby Red Soldiers’ is a ten-star opening to the Strings collection. It is highly creative with a new take on the supernatural. I’m doing an effort not to spoil this one but suffice to say I loved every bit of it. Also, the fact that I don’t think I have read – or seen – any scary stories that take place during the day. It’s always the dark and dead of night, but not Gallagher, and not this story.
‘A Hiker’s Life’ is an excellent and creative masterpiece about the things that go bump in the morning! I love how Gallagher had me fooled throughout this entire piece.
I loved the five-star piece called ‘The Wishing Well’, which was not scary at first but the ending was the scariest part. In a ’A Bag Full of Ashes’ who could have though Christmas would be scary? It’s new, suspenseful, different and interesting. It also has this sort of uniting in death theme.
‘Renovation’ is one of the stories that do not include the supernatural element but that is scarier than many other-worldly stories. I loved the image “the kitchen was an untapped pit of darkness”. This story will give every reader the notion of thinking several times and looking into suspicious investments. A ten-star piece!
‘Kumari’ is a short story hit the spot for me. It is certainly one of my favourites in the Strings collection. There is no magic involved, just a little girl with a warrior within against a male-dominated society. I did not feel it was a scary story but certainly a ten-star masterpiece!
‘Fighting the Curse’ is a dark and interesting story though a bit bloody and gruesome but nonetheless different and enjoyable.
In ‘A Secret in Time’ I felt that there was something wrong with the third person narrations of this story, like it’s too passive or too slow. Overall, the storyline is good and though the Hiker’s transformation is a big vague, the story is interesting and would be great to build up a full-length novella or novel on it. I enjoyed the fight and the constant power shift as well as the sort of beauty and the beast reversal.
Moving on to a ‘New Life, New World, New Beginnings’, which represents a new take on the sewer cliché as one character says “You mean all a criminal has to do to escape is go into the sewers?” and surprisingly the answer is “Yes!” Which is rather comical. This story is another Gallagher masterpiece that is highly creative with more experimentation on Lycans rather than werewolves.
I loved ‘Hustled’, which I felt could be metaphoric for the burdens we bear and encumber ourselves with in life. The story moves at a fairly slow pace at first but for good reason then the speed picks up with the turn of events and the speed that comes with such a shift is very nicely done. I liked Sebil’s cunning.
In ‘Till Death Do Us Part’ I loved the bit when one character asks “Why?” and the reply was “Because I want to and because I can”.
‘Akuya’ is one of the top masterpieces in the collection. I loved every bit of it, particularly how it is not about good and evil or even their notions. A must read! It is followed by ‘Flight of a Dead Man’, an action-packed story that seems to be inspired by the theme of The Transporter movies. I loved Gallagher’s use of this speech in this piece. A must read ten-star story!
Another masterpiece is the story of ‘Sinsu’, which I truly enjoyed, especially how it unfolded, how taunting bad dreams could be and I believe many can relate to having a bad day after a nightmare. The ending was perfect.
‘Too Little, Too Late’ is a heart-breaking story that is not scary and has no place in this collection in my personal opinion. It is well written but I did not like the content.
I wish I could mention and comment on all but that will make my review far longer than it already is. However, I will briefly mention a few more titles that I enjoyed: ‘Down by the River’, ‘Little Haven’, ‘Jars of Hearts’, ‘A Murder of Crows’, ‘Blood Ties’, ‘A Christmas Tree Is More than Just an Object’, and ‘Frozen Out’.
Overall Gallagher uses many children in his stories to reinforce the scary element, added to using familiar ideas like Christmas trees and contemplating at the lake and twisting the events to create something brand new. This adds a lot to his works, most of which are highly enjoyable.
There were a few stories that were er.. ok for me, but only one felt out place in this collection, hence a 4.5-star rating is in order. I realize it is almost impossible to like every piece in a collection.

Note: I received a free copy of Strings from the author for an honest review and while this post was originally slated for 31st of October, 2014, stuff happened and both my reading and post were delayed.

Strings is a very addicting collection of 33 dark short stories. I had a difficult time reading just one. I was stealing moments through out the day to read .

Daren has a very straight forward writing style. He lays out the settings and the characters in great detail and many times the ending is unexpected. Each story was very different than the one before it. There are so many topics ranging from monsters, werewolves, ghosts, insects and more. The stories were to the point and fast paced.

The Wishing Well seemed like an average story about a couple but the ending chilled me to the bone. The renovation was my favorite story. It was the type of story that made the hair on the back of my next stands up but without any type of ghost or outlandish monster. A bag full of ashes has changed the way I look at Christmas trees. These were just some of my favorites. They were vivid well written stories that were completely terrifying.

For all things bookish go on to For The Love of Fictional Worlds

Mr. Gallagher has chosen somewhat of a under-selected genre for his debut collection of short stories, especially considering this is his debut novel. Even, then he actually succeeds in holding my attention throughout the book.
Short stories, though are notoriously quite difficult to review. Only because, the moment everything starts getting interesting, the story ends. But true horror stories have been quite rare and few in between. And when I say true horror stories, I mean, which doesn't always have a love story trapped in between looking for a happy ending.

Mr. Gallagher's writing, though is absolutely engaging. Even in this short stories, he has managed to capture the essence of the horror and mystery quite well. There were quite a few stories where even I (a vertiable guesser of what's coming next in the plot!) was unable to guess what would be coming next or how the story would end. So yes, I fell in love with the writing style of this author (and no, I don't fall in love easily, except with fictional characters of course :P)
This collection has a variety of plots to spook you as well as leave you hanging for more! From shapeshifters, to giant spiders to deadly fairies to psychopathic lovers, this collection has everything for a versatile reader.

This collection of stories is perfect for whetting your appetite for more! The writing is wonderful, the settings of each story is intriguing enough to keep you hooked in, till you are done and you realize that the shadows behind you could mean that there is another person in the room with you.
A wonderful debut, all in all, and I can't wait to read more stories that horrify me from this author!

This is a perfect companion to all that horror loving readers out there (Companion only because these are short stories!). Also, perfect for those light night talks, where you can read these horror stories to scare the bajeesus out of each other. Definitely perfect for the bonfire/camp nights as well.

Firstly, I will start my review by saying that I’m not the world’s biggest fan of short stories and secondly, I've fallen off the ‘fiction band wagon’ these past few years due to a busy work schedule and study. Also, the surge of so called ‘popular’ fiction books has not reignited my fire. However, I was a big horror book fan and Stephen King fan in my late teens so I was keen to dip my toes back into it and this book afforded me an excellent opportunity to do so. For that opportunity alone, it gets an immediate thumbs up!

The key core strength of Strings as I see it, is the authors ability to write interesting, imaginative, yet completely earthed stories across a wide plethora of genres with the category of fiction writing i.e. Supernatural, horror, fantasy etc. The book is a complete mixed bag of tricks which I loved and if your imagination is a fertile as mine, then the hamster within will well and truly run off his trundle wheel! There is everything from vampires, werewolves, ghosts, fairies etc. If you’ve jumped off the ‘fiction ship’ recently or become disillusioned with the ‘popular fiction bus’ then this really is the book to whet your appetite back into the different genres of fiction. The author’s ability to conjure up such imaginative and vivid stories from simple, basic everyday life events is very skilful e.g. walking a dog, hiking up a hill etc. His ability to move from such earthed simplicity to ingenious writing is very compelling.

On the con side of Strings, I would argue that some of the stories are far too short and they ended far too abruptly in my opinion which left me reeling in that halfway house of combined pleasure and pain but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, is it?

I feel that Strings is the start of a great journey for the author. The book clearly shows the huge potential that lies within the author to write across such a wide variety of genres under the ‘fiction umbrella’ in such an imaginative, fearless yet earthed way. I think there’s a lot more to come here and I look forward to reading more unconstrained work from the author, in particular some longer stories or a novel!

Strings was a new experience for me as a reader. I have read few books of short stories so I went in with an open mind hoping it would change my typical, unfavorable outlook on short story format.

I immediately liked his style of writing. The Author lays out each scene of each story perfectly. He writes in a very straight forward style, describing things precisely, so I was able to immediately picture and feel the location, weather, tone etc. all in vivid detail. I appreciate that in a book. He writes smooth and creatively.

This book was fun! You cannot just read one story and put it down. You will easily read many in one sitting. Each story was very different and displays the Author's vivid imagination. I found myself chuckling at times at the story lines because I admired his wild imagination and had no idea how most stories would end. The stories varied in complexity and the writing seemed to get better as the book went on.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was the perfect balance of not too violent or scary for me, but just enough to creep me out, make me wonder, and keep me turning the pages, fully engaged. I will read more books from this Author and recommend this book to other readers.

I received this book in a goodreads giveaway. There are a lot of story's in this book, 33 in fact and I feel this is to many as not enough detail is given to each story. Take the first story for example, I was really getting into the main character of the story, she grabbed my attention from the start but then all off a sudden much to my disappointment the story finish without me learning anything more about her. The same goes for the second story, a little bit more about the who and whys would have made a huge difference. I read a story very like it in style not so long before but which about 50 pages and the was are satisfying experience. While this is a criticism, it's also a compliment to the author because the story's intrested me enough to want. Some of the other shorter story's do work well but there are some many sharp shock endings to be read before it gets repetitive. Overall, not a bad book but one that could have been so much better with more detail and less story's.

"Strings"
This collection of 33 short stories will have you imagination running wild and leave you wondering what is hiding in the dark. the characters are well written and believable to anyone with an open mind and a interest in all things supernatural. If you've ever had a nightmare that you can't forget then these stories are those same nightmare brought to life. This once forgotten genre is coming back in a big way and once you've read this you'll be thirsty for more. I for one will be keeping an eye out for Darrens next collection and also keeping an eye out for anything that goes bump in the night from now on.

A well written collection of thirty-three short (dark) stories. Some of the stories will chill you to the bone. There are ghosts, faeries, monsters, vampires, werewolves , the supernatural, to name a few. Strings will leave you checking under the bed, and leaving the lights on at night. I highly recommend to those who love horror, dark, and short stories. I look forward to reading more(Books) by Darren Gallagher.

I really enjoyed this! 33 stories, each one well written and a delightful insight into another world.

The stories keep you hooked and the characters and situations surrounding them are terrifying to say the least (in a good way that is..:) ). A few of my favourites were: A Hiker's Life, Flight of a Deadman, New Life New World New Beginnings & Red Alert.

This author reminded me of a mixture of Stephen King & Neil Gaiman.

This is the perfect book for someone who is on the go, or just sitting chilling in the evening. Definitely a must read!

I won this book through the Goodreads First Reads program. This was a great book of short stories and even though I wish a few of the stories were a bit longer, it was a excellent read. I didn't want to read through the book in a few days so I decided I would read a few of the stories each day or every other day. I'm glad I read it that way because I found myself looking forward to my daily reading time and getting into the stories of this book.
