J.H. Dierking’s 2014 novella The Joining is an unusual and original first contact story.

A bit slow until they meet the aliens but I loved it once they did. This story has a really cool concept for aliens and weaves their social structure and physical structure together in really thought provoking ways. 'Thought provoking' is the best description actually. it tickled my brain the way asimov's mystery series do. At the end I was left feeling a lot like I did at the end of CL Moore's 'No Woman Born' - equally horrified and satisfied and triumphant. Its an unexpected ending but it sure ...more
