H P. Lovecraft shows up in this volume, and the war among the armed detectives, the gangsters and the Northern American agent is heating up, so 4 stars.
Plus lovely to revisit this volume again!
PS: but please don't you ever get me started with all the giggling and fangirl's exclaiming I have done for all these Bungō Stray Dogs fanfics (Edagawa Rampo/Edgar Allan Poe is a thing, mind you. XD)
THIS WAS NOT IN THE ANIME This is the same man who is responsible for 136 murders, 312 extortion cases, 625 cases of fraud, and other crimes
DAZAI YOU'RE SUCH A GODDAMN CLOWN I LOVE YOU EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE A BASTARD He's my problematic fave
Also let's get some Aku appreciation because of that bonus story I don't care if he's a mass murderer he is my son (This series really has me defending several mass murderers huh)
4.5 "He was not afraid to die. He was thinking that perphaps even Hell would be a better place to live than there. He was not afraid of the pain of dying, either ".
“-If there anything you wish for? -I want to find a reason…a meaning to my life. - I will give you one”.
Ósea simplemente brillante. Siento que el manga esta infravalorado.
So we sort of got a Cthulhu attack (though tentacles in manga isn't exactly a stretch ...)
The Guild members have been a fun addition to this series but I want them to get on with the story and stop introducing more new people. The cast is big enough!
Got our Chuuya, Ranpo-san, Lovecraft going Cthulhu-style but what punched me right in the feels was the short Akutagawa story. It was so beautiful and now we can understand Akutagawa-kun's behavior towards Dazai T_T....And young Dazai...oh dear lord, you really don't want him as your enemy.
The three sides battle finally continues!!! The Port Mafia is moving forward using various sneak tactics to make the Armed Detective Agency and the Guild clash. As expected of Mori-san.. Even Dazai himself acknowledges his ability to make rational decision that benefits the Port Mafia. But, fear not! The ADA is also capable of fighting against these gangsters wuhuuuu!!!
I really enjoy this volume because Asagiri sensei portrayed more feelings on the characters. Previously, we saw that Atsushi expressing his feelings when fighting with Akutagawa, and in this volume, it's Akutagawa's turn to show his desperation to be acknowledged by the one person who took him into the Mafia. He's one of the most violent character, a mad dog with so much potential, but he was hurting a lot... My poor baby...🥺😭 And when he remembers what Atsushi said to him before (people can't live if no one tells them it's okay for them to live), his response is so heartbreaking huwaaa
A scene that I like from him: "Defeat and humiliation are part of me. I am a defeated soldier who walks in darkness. Therefore, this degree of despair cannot kill me."
ALSO!!!! There's an extra story about Akutagawa's past, of how he was recruited into the Port Mafia. As a kid, he went through a lot and even now, he's sucking it up (the pain I mean). If only.. if only he's treated better by the one who took him in... (I suggest you read BEAST because Akutagawa meets someone who takes him in and cares for him) Overall, it's really interesting to know how he views Dazai and from this story, you'll find out why he really wants his acknowledgement. I kid you not... Dazai is a demon... a demon for sure... he knows everything, he sees everything, and he manipulates you by using what you desire... This man is too strong psychologically.
This volume delivers the action-packed twists and character dynamics that I, as a fan, have come to love. From the electrifying battles to the memorable character interactions, this volume feels like a roller-coaster of emotions and revelations.
One of the standout moments is the intense confrontation between Akutagawa and Nathaniel Hawthorne, which left me absolutely shook! The fight is stunning, and it had me at the edge of my seat. The tension and stakes feel higher than ever, making it a memorable battle.
Character development is, as always, on point. Kenji, with his charming innocence, continues to be a highlight, making me cry with his genuine sincerity. His adorably naive observations, like “His hat doesn’t fall off even though he’s upside down... City dwellers are so cool!” really show the warmth that this series brings to its characters. Meanwhile, Chuya remains as captivating as ever—there’s just something about his smirk that never fails to leave a lasting impression.
This volume continues to explore the interplay between action, philosophy, and the literary references that define the series. It's a mix of deep character insights, moral dilemmas, and, of course, insane battles that have the pages quickly turning on their own. While the tone may fluctuate between lighthearted and intense, the narrative remains gripping, leaving the reader wanting more by the end of each chapter.
Overall, vol. 6 offers a blend of heart-pounding action and complex characters that keep the series at the top of its game. It’s got me emotionally invested and already eager for what’s to come in the next volume.
i’ve been following the Bungou Stray Dogs manga chapter by chapter on the dazaiscans translations for a while now, and i’m somewhat proud to say i am absolute weeaboo trash for this series. but!! omg!!! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IVE ACTUALLY HELD, AND OWNED, AND READ A PHYSICAL COPY OF THIS MANGA!!!! MY FAVOURITE!!!!!!!!
highlights: > Ranpo calls John and Lovecraft a “happy couple” > Q SHOWS UP!!! > “now, ladies, I wonder if you enjoy grapes” -John > CHUUYA SHOULD BE ELPHABA FROM WICKED BC HE’S “DEFYING GRAVITY” AYYYE > i love Yosano > TIDBITS AND FACTS AND STORIES ABOUT THE AUTHORS...THANK U....FEED ME > EXTRA ART BY SANGO HARUKAWA!!! THAT YELLOW-THEMED GUILD PRINT WAS THE MOST AMAZING SURPRISE EVER
so in conclusion. thank you so much to Kafka Asagiri and Sango Harukawa for feeding me
*Reread 12/16/2021* I want more Gin and Ryunosuke sibling interactions especially from their past. Honestly I just want to know more about Gin in general.
*Original Review 2/17/2020* I can't believe I've been blessed with an Akutagawa short story <3
How can I NOT give this volume 5 stars when there’s a short story of Akutagawa titled The Heartless Dog.
It makes so much sense why he wants validation from Dazai so bad, it’s the very reason he’s living for.
I love every fight scene in here, ones between formidable opponent Akutagawa-Nathaniel, supreme strength Kenji-Chuuya-Yosano, fighting spirit flamed by sister Tanizaki-Steinbeck
Lovecraft finally appears and shows the extent of his powers which was definitely interesting. I wonder how many more literary icons they'll rope into the series.
all of the bsd covers are so pretty, but this one is probably my favorite so far. i honestly forgot like all of this from the anime, so it’s fun reading it like it’s the first time.
these chapters were so good! i really enjoy the guild and the three way battle between them, the mafia and the agency is probably my favorite part of the story thus far. also we get to see a full chapter of both akutagawa (diablo) and chuuya in action 😻
2nd read 4.5/5 stars bro what was i thinking giving this 3.5 stars before... akutagawa my baby :( also, the heartless cur being on this volume after we get an insight into him during his fight with nathaniel makes me want to fucking rip my hair off also chuuya my darling beloved i love it when he gets a little bit unhinged and smug
Okay... getting a bit more interesting now, with a battle between Akutagawa and Hawthorne, some espionage (so to speak) by the mafia, and another big battle between Tanizaki, Kunikida, Lovecraft and Steinbeck. Seems like these are just the tip of the iceberg though, and that something serious is going to happen soon.
Chapter notes below for personal reference: (potentially spoiler heavy)
