This book should be required reading in all schools. No other book liberates the mind of dogma as this wonderful compilation of some of the greatest minds. Thank you for reinforcing so much of my beliefs that I have evolved later in life...

It's a collection of various pieces and it's focused on USA.

"Poetry is truer than history."
This was such an interesting look into possible origins of the myths of so many modern religions.
1. Mithras in 6th century Persia: born of a virgin with only shepherds present; known as "the Way," "the Truth," "the Life," "the Word," "the Son of God;" Sunday was sacred to him; communion was observed by his followers; he was placed in a rock tomb and three days later was removed
2. Babylonian writings centuries before the Israelites had their own version of creation with contained a flood, the expulsion of Satan from heaven and his descent into hell
3. Horus: baptized with water; identified with the cross; the manifesting Son of God; a child of a virgin; 12 followers; the Morning Star
4. December 25th from the Roman celebration of Sol Invictus - the Sun Unconquered - because the sun goes from being at its southern most point, to rising, or - being reborn
5. The Zend-Avesta, the sacred writings of ancient Persia, states the Supreme being created the universe and man in six successive periods of time, in the following order: the Heavens, the Waters, the Earth, the Trees and Plants, Animals, Man, and on the final day he rested
6. Persian legend tells the first couple lived originally in purity and innocence. An evil demon came to them in the form of a serpent sent by the prince of devils, and gave them fruit of a wonderful tree which imparted immortality. Evil then entered their hearts and they fell and forfeited eternal happiness.
7. The Babylonians had a creation myth with the Fall of Man 1,500 years before the Hebrews
8. The Persians supposed that a region of bliss and delight called Heden, more beautiful than all the rest of the world, traversed by a mighty river, was the original abode if the first men, before they were tempted by the evil spirit in the form of a serpent, to partake in the fruit of the forbidden tree.
9. The Greek translation of Isaiah's Hebrew "young woman" was a word than can either men "virgin" or "young woman."
10. The discrepancies about the Resurrection within the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
11. the beliefs of the founding presidents in regards to religion
It's incredibly informative and very interesting.

Full of typing errors. Many generalizations. This book was useful as a starting point for learning about the many complaints that atheists/agnostics have against religion. I wrote down some topics to research in other sources later, but it was frustrating that most essays in this book were completely off base.
And I read the second (revised) edition. Good grief!
