Don't miss this breathtaking collection of stories set in the world of the New York Times best-selling Darkest Minds trilogy. Featuring ebook original novellas In Time and Sparks Rise, and a gripping, brand-new novella, Through the Dark is a must-have for fans of the Darkest Minds. This collection contains three novellas: In Time, Sparks Rise, and Beyond the Night, as well as a sneak peek at the first novel in Alexandra Bracken's new series, Passenger.

IN TIME
Gabe's life has been devastated in the wake of the economic crash. The only option left for someone like him to escape his tragic past is to leave his small town behind and to attempt to become a skiptracer. This already almost-impossible task is made all the more difficult by his first "score,"a young girl who won't speak, but who changes his life in ways he could never imagine.

SPARKS RISE
Sam didn't think things could get worse at Thurmond rehabilitation camp. Then the Reds arrive. Everyone assumed the kids with firepower had been killed years ago. Instead they were taken away, brainwashed, and returned as terrifyingly effective guards. To her horror, Sam recognizes one of them: Lucas, the one spark of light in Sam's dark childhood. Lucas has a deadly secret--he beat the brutal training that turned his fellow Reds into mindless drones. When Sam defends herself against an attack by a vile PSF guard and faces a harrowing punishment, Lucas must risk everything to save her.

BEYOND THE NIGHT
The government-run "rehabilitation camps" have been shut down, but kids with Psi powers are anything but free. Sam would rather be on her own than put in the care of a foster family and given the "cure"--a dangerous procedure that unclaimed kids across the country are being forced to undergo. But there's more at stake than just her own safety. Sam once made someone a promise, and the time has come to fulfill it. Now that she's out of her camp, Mia only has one thought in her head: finding Lucas, her beloved older brother.

These novellas are AMAZING! Alex is great at writing short stories.

I specifically loved the last novella "Beyond the Night" SO FREAKING GOOD. It answered so many of the questions that I had after finishing In the Afterlight.

Glad I picked this up!

Oh god. WHAT. A. BOOK. I cried A LOT. Even if these novellas aren't that long, they are just perfect and I was an emotional wreck, believe me. Every novella was pure gold and the new characters are so unique and different. I can't help but admire Bracken's writing style.

I was SCREAMING when out of no where MY SWEET BBY LIAM CAME BACK. (Okay, I think I was screaming AND sobbing.) He is such a sweetheart and this book just made me love him even more if that's even possible. I hadn't even realized how much I had missed my favorite group! AHHHHHHHHHH I don't want to let go of these wonderful characters again! Nooooooo!

Mild spoilers ahead, so if you have not read this book yet, GO READ IT. You will NOT be disappointed!!

Alright then! Let's start!

IN TIME: I knew what would happen. I was so certain of it, but still I tried to deny it and have my hopes up. "Maybe this time it'll be different...." I whispered to myself. And then.... BOOOOOM. Alexandra Bracken just shot an arrow right through my heart. *ugly sobbing*

SPARKS RISE: New characters! Yay! I absolutely loved this novella. Our new characters, Sam and Lucas are BRILLIANT. But the more I read, the more I started to fear. "Okay, this has to end well. There's no way this'll end like In Time. [insert fearful laugh] There just can't be another heartbreaking novella after another, right? ...Right?" And guess what? BOOOOOOOM. Now there were two arrows sticking out of my heart. *ugly sobbing continued as my hopes died*

BEYOND THE NIGHT: This was probably my favorite novella! The old squad is BACK. And like I said earlier, my mind (and heart) went ASDFGHJJGFDSSDF when I realized my babies were included in this story! A new character, Mia, was fantastic. I loved this new trio's dynamic and if you mix the old gang and the new trio together - perfection. This was really an emotional roller coaster for me. The ending was amazing and it does hurt a bit to leave these characters behind again. *sigh*

5/5 stars. I regret nothing. Go read this book.

Review for 3.5 -

Definitely not the strongest of the stories in this series. It felt weak and slightly undeveloped. Of course I was curious about Mia, Sam and Lucas - and seeing the gang rocked - but this story fell flat for me. It didn't answer the questions I wanted answered nor did it provide that great of an insight on the world after book 3 which just leaves me with more questions. I would still recommend this if you read 2.5 and enjoyed it though!

“We will move forward as one, and in time, rise like sparks beyond the night.”

I’d forgotten how much I missed this series and its characters and the writing, and everything.

That last novella was necessary, because In The Afterlight left me incomplete and with so many questions. Beyond The Night gives you a peek at what’s happening a few weeks after the ending of the series. It’s told in Sam and Mia’s (Lucas’ little sister) POV and yes, you get to see the series’ main characters again!
Cole, *sobs forever*
I loved two of these novellas, and didn’t enjoy the other one too much, that’s why I’m giving it 4 stars.

I really enjoyed this collection of novellas! I liked that we got to see some different perspectives during The Darkest Minds (but away from Ruby and the main story), as well as seeing how the world was changing and adapting after the last book ended.

While I liked In Time, Sparks Rise and Beyond the Night are what really made this book worth it. I felt that while it was nice getting Gabe's perspective in In Time, which was so drastically different as he was not one of the kids with powers, he wasn't really likable for most of the novella. I think that was the point, to see him grow and change, but this was the shortest of the novellas and I think it was a disservice because everything happened too quickly to really care about what happened to him.

Sparks Rise and Beyond the Night were both told in alternating POVs (Sparks Rise was Sam and her friend Lucas and Beyond the Night was Sam and Mia, Lucas's sister). In Sparks Rise, we saw more of the brutality of Thurmond, which obviously wasn't enjoyable, but I liked seeing more of the camp to really drive home how horrible these camps were. And Beyond the Night takes place after the events of In the Afterlight, and I loved getting to see the gang again, although it was really interesting seeing them from a different perspective.

I wish Beyond the Night was split into more than 5 chapters. I understand that it was done to flip back and forth between Sam and Mia, but I wish each of them was separated into parts because the chapters were super long (and I like short chapters lol). Also, I wish that I had read this right after I finished In the Afterlight. I still enjoyed this a lot, but it would have been better if the events of the trilogy were fresher in my mind.

Definitely recommend for people who like The Darkest Minds trilogy - especially because of Beyond the Night, which wraps up some lingering questions from the end of In the Afterlight.

Wow…

I’m speechless…

Alexandra Bracken really knows how to write novellas. I only read Beyond the Night right now because I read the other two before. In Time and Sparks Rise were both heartbreaking and so was Beyond the Night. The writing is beautiful and I constantly felt all these emotions that engulfed me all at once. This bind-up of novellas was truly beautiful and amazing. Beyond the Night cleared up so many things and everything after the series makes so much more sense.

This entire series is fantastic and will never be forgotten by me!

Liked the first two stories, but the last one was terrible, it was far too boring and bleak and did a bad job in wrapping up the series. Mia's POV was rubbish, she was insufferable and dull, and Sam was no better she turned into a weak, uninteresting doormat.

When I heard that this book came out, I wanted to get it so badly. I haven't finished Winter, which is part of yet another series I love. And I haven't got the chance to read The Stolen Chapters, my most anticipated read of 2016! There are so many books but so little time. I really want to catch up because I am scared I am going to be spoiled and I want to discuss the books with others.

Everyone talks about all of these books and I want to join in because...

“We will move forward as one, and in time, rise like sparks beyond the night.”

I am so glad I got the chance to read this book, it was a great way to return to another beautiful world that I love. It was a great experience, and it is a really good read. But, this is a bunch of nouvellas for the Darkest Minds Trilogy.

If you haven't heard of the Darkest Minds Trilogy, it is basically about a girl named Ruby who was locked in her basement on her 10th birthday. Her parents believed that she was acting strange and a bunch of soldiers showed up at her house and took her away into a camp. This camp had a bunch of other kids who were all sorted into different colors. These colors represented a certain ability that each kid had. Kids were either Green, Red, Orange, Yellow or Blue. This camp isn't one of those fun summer camps, it was more of the type of camp where you might die any second if you make the wrong move. In order to survive, Ruby feels the need to escape and after this, her adventure will begin.

I don't know if that was the best summary because it's been a while since I read the series. I remember that it was really good so I highly recommend it if you haven't read it already. If you have read the series, I highly recommend you read this because you are missing out! It was an amazing experience and we got more from the world. We saw from different points of view that we haven't seen before and we learn more about the characters.

When I read about the characters, I was like,

It was interesting to see how different characters survive or attempt to survive. Most of the nouvellas had me crying because of how sad they were, the suffering and pain hits you hard in the feels. But it was all worth it, we get to see the characters from the Darkest Minds trilogy and it made up for all of the sad parts.

Even though it can be sad...

Right when I started reading, I couldn't stop, it was fast paced and it was hard to put the book down. Once again, I highly recommend you read this! It was really good and you will be glad that you did! Trust me.

Alexandra Bracken is legit my favorite author. She is so talented and can I please just BE HER. Her characters are phenomenal and her descriptions and style are amazing. She can create such a fleshed out and colorful world for her readers that is really incredible. She is an amazing story teller. These novellas were so great, and this world she created for TDM has been expanded perfectly. Anyone who read TDM series should pick this book up, it is so so great.

We will move forward as one, and in time, rise like sparks beyond the night.

I have been a huge fan of the darkest minds series since i first started reading them and i have always felt like i needed some more closure and i feel like this book gave me that closure i needed.

Following Gabe's story in the first one was a really great story to start off with because it's about change and he makes some throughout the novella and even more so when he meets the little girl who doesn't speak.

I really loved getting the last two novella's about sam and how she was after Ruby escaped from the camp. I feel like i got the much needed closure on what happened with Sam after Ruby and how she dealt with things during that time and i finally got the answers that i had been wanting.

Home isn’t four walls, it’s the people you’re with.

I can say that i was extremely satisfied with how this novella played out and i cannot wait to start book four knowing what i know now from reading this one.

Come see this review and more at my blog, The Scribe Owl!

Thanks to Kat Blackwood for a copy of the K to finish the DARK on my shelf!

The Darkest Minds: ★★★★★
Never Fade: ★★★★☆
In The Afterlight: ★★★½☆
Through the Dark: ★★★★☆

Wow. I wasn't expecting much from this because novellas are never quite as good as the books in the actual series, but this one fits in perfectly. In my opinion, it even beat In the Afterlight! I'm so glad I enjoyed this against all odds. Happy accidents!

In Time (1.5): ★★★★☆
The first novella took place after The Darkest Minds and before Neverfade when Zu was traveling to her family in California. We saw her meet Gabe, who wanted to turn her in for the reward. We get to see his mind slowly change because let's face it Zu is an angel. This was the shortest one, so I didn't get to learn our new character of Gabe that well, but when stuff went down it the end, oh it hurt. It hurt. I never knew how badly I needed those happy endings until they were taken away.

Sparks Rise (2.5): ★★★★★
Sparks Rise was my absolute favorite. We got to look into the life of Sam, Ruby's best friend from Thurmond, and see what the camp were like after Ruby left. This one takes place right between Neverfade and In the Afterlight. Sam meets her best friend from before they was taken by the PSFs, Lucas Orfeo. And Lucas is a Red. But somehow his mind isn't fractured like the others', and he and Sam devise a plan to escape. The ending here hurt too. Hurt more, to be honest, because we had more time to meet the characters. I won't even start to talk about, because then I know I'm done for.

Beyond the Night (3.5): ★★★★☆
Beyond the Night was like a 200 page long epilogue to In the Afterlight. Most of the loose ends from the third book were tied up neatly, leaving just enough for Zu's new book, The Darkest Legacy. Beyond the Night was told in the perspectives of Sam and Mia, Lucas's sister, though we had Ruby, Lee, Vi, and Chubs make a length appearance. It was so fantastic to see the gang again, and it was a relief to have the ending of Sparks rise cleaned up.

Overall
All in all, I'm so glad I was gifted a copy of this book. I never knew I needed it until I finished it! I would definitely recommend it. While not essential to understanding the rest of the series, it will definitely make your read more enjoyable.

Como este libro es un recopilatorio de las 3 historias cortas de la saga, voy a reseñarlas una por una. Debo decir que son las historias cortas que más me han llegado. Muy recomendables.

In Time

Sparks Rise
I'm in love <3 *sighs*
No sé qué esperar de In The Afterlight. ¿Puedo permitirme el lujo d tener esperanza?

Beyond the Night
Necesitaba esto. Necesitaba retomar la historia de estos personajes, saber más sobre "después" y poder unir los pedacitos de mi corazón que quedaron rotos en Sparks Rise.
Thank you Alexandra.

We will move forward as one, and in time, rise like sparks beyond the night.

In Time 4 stars
Loved Zu's story, what you can mean in somebody's life just by believing in them and not giving up. Very sad end though :'(

Sparks Rise 4.5 stars
You just have to read it for yourself. Extremely sad story. :''(

Beyond the Night 3.5 stars
Hmm, not a bad story but I just didn't like Sam (who to me felt like a Ruby-clone) and Mia (who came across as way younger than she was. And I mean, we all sometimes act like a child, but it was just too much for me).

It will grow as we bring others in, as we bring the lost ones together again, gather up the embers scattered from the same fire. One day, we will ignite and create a blaze that no one can put out, ignore, hurt. We will move forward as one, and in time, rise like sparks beyond the night.

In Time: 2/5
Sparks Rise: 4/5
Beyond the Night: 5/5

Wow.

Wow.

Honestly.

I had already read In Time (#1.5) and Sparks Rise (#2.5) before this, but wow. Beyond the Night (#3.5) is really something special.

I don't know how to make this review extra special but I feel like it needs to be. This series is so important to me and I love it so much, but this is the end and as much as that makes me sad, I'm also glad that it ended with Beyond the Night. It's closure, it's answered questions, and it wraps the series up nicely.

And sure, you can get away with just reading The Darkest Minds, Never Fade, and In the Afterlight, but these "inbetweener" books add so much. There's a lot of questions about the world answered in these books, and a lot of other characters are explored. It's not like they each are a retelling of the three main books but from other character's perspectives, these are actual, individual characters narrating events as they happen.

Also, be prepared to cry. Grab those tissues. Shut the door to your room and cry your eyes out. Happy or sad tears, it doesn't matter, anything is possible!

I really wish I had more to say, or, more accurately, I wish I knew how to put my love into words. These characters are like family to me and I know that sounds so cheesy, but honestly they light up my day. Chubs and Vida are so funny, Liam and Ruby are just giant sweethearts, and Sam and Lucas have quickly earned their place on my list of favorite characters. Mia, of course, is not left out, as well as Zu. They're all so perfect and I want to make sure that my review is good and solid because this is the last book!

(Is there an emoji for bawling my eyes out?)

Five hundred stars out of five, and let me just say that I'm trying really hard to think of books that are similar to these, but I can't. The Darkest Minds is pretty much the book I base everything off of.

I'm sorry, usually this is where I put, "If you liked [specific book], you'll like Through the Dark and the rest of the series," but I honestly can't think of a single book.

4.5 AMAZING stars! I'm not usually a huge fan of novellas because I typically only ever want more of my favorite characters/what happens in the future, not the last. But these novellas were beyond perfect!

In Time was my least favorite, but still heart breakingly touching.

Sparks Rise was an incredible introduction to Lucas and I'm so happy we got to see more of Sam! But again, HEART BREAKING.

Beyond the Night was absolute perfection! Seeing the old squad together again made my heart do a little happy dance. I laughed, I cried, and I didn't want it to end! I loved seeing what happened to Sam, Mia, and Lucas and I'm so happy so many of the questions I had at the end of In The Afterlight were answered. Still sobbing over Cole and drooling over Liam.

Haven't read these yet? GO READ THEM NOW!

As my best friend responded to this book: ALL HAIL ALEXANDRA BRACKEN. SHE HAS TEARED ME APART AND SEWED ME BACK TOGETHER ONCE AGAIN.

I cried so much reading these novellas. So much. The Darkest Minds is my absolute favorite series that holds so many dear emotions close to my heart, so reading about my favorite people again and the people around them just tore me apart. I laughed, I criiiiiied, and I just thoroughly enjoyed this. This band of characters will always, ALWAYS have a special place in my heart. Words can't describe my love for these characters and their story, so just go and read it. Read. It.

This broke my heart. Repaired it and then broke it again! That last story with Sam and Ruby and urg my heart cannot take it.

What I love about these Novellas is they’re actually important to the overall plot of the main series and added a lay of love and complexity to an amazing story.

My only Criticism is that it was very blocked writing. Almost always inner dialogue without any actually dialogue so it did make these stories almost feel longer than the series! But I think that’s more personal taste than bad writing or story telling.

Overall I can’t wait to dive into the darkest legacy!

Kabullenemiyorum!

Through The Dark: A Darkest Minds Collection is the compilation of all the three novellas of The Darkest Minds series. It contains In Time, Sparks Rise, and the very exclusive to this bunch: Beyond the Night.

This collection is genius! In this book, we get to see different areas of struggles for different people in the world of The Darkest Minds.

In Time
I think In Time is really short. It focuses on the life of Gabe, a young man who aspires to be a skip-tracer, who met Zu, a yellow, along his way to search for kids to turn in.

What I can say was that Gabe is one of those characters that you would want to be in the main series. I think he’s one of those you would want to see developing and changing through time and getting somewhere bigger. It would have been good to see him with a greater purpose. So, I think this novella was too short for such a good character as him.

Sparks Rise
With Sam’s and Lucas’s alternate narrations, Sparks Rise takes place after Ruby escaped Thurmond. It is about Sam and what happened to her after being left in that place when the Reds were brought back into the camp after years of “programming” in the Project Jamboree which was mentioned somewhere in the parent series.

Here’s what I think: Sam and Lucas deserve a full-length novel!!!! When I was reading this one, I was panicking inside. I was so excited for the two of them!

I don’t know if it was just me being a cry-baby but the last two sentences of the last chapter narrated by Sam made me cry! How could two simple sentences make someone cry??? Those were everything! It was the bomb to my emotions!

Beyond the Night
Thank you so much, Alexandra Bracken, for this!

Please take note that you should have read Sparks Rise and In the Afterlight before proceeding to this one. Beyond the Night is told both from Sam’s and Mia’s points of view.

This story serves two purposes: a continuation of Sparks Rise and a fuller epilogue of In the Afterlight It is a must-read!

Beyond the Night is set after the story of In the AfterLight. It focuses on what happened after the camps were taken down. This novella, that’s almost like a full-length novel because it’s pretty long, is like an extended and satisfying epilogue that wraps up the whole series. I love it so much because it has more of a closure for me. It’s not that I didn’t love the ending of the third book in its parent series; it’s just that this one has me like: “Okay, I can now depart from this world”, although I would gladly appreciate another book or novella in addition to this series.

What to expect:
1.) Cars
2.) Fairytales
3.) “snatchers” instead of skip tracers
4.) Some burning
5.)
6.)
7.) A

So, to sum this review up, all I can say is that you have to buy a copy of this bundle of good stuff and read it!
