I have had several problems with this story.
The first one is its little historical accuracy. The author takes what suits her well and forgets about the customs when they don´t suit her, like hands caresses at a dinner, to be seen in male company without carbine, to accept male visits at home without carbine... etc...
Another problem has been that the story does not correspond to the blurb that presents it. It leaves us believing that the male protagonist, of low rank, fight desperately to disregard of the female protagonist (this is true) and that she does not allow it, she does not yield in her eagerness to approach him (this is not true). She spends more than half of the book crying (or enduring tears) because he doesn't want her, while he has told her that he do want her but that due to the difference of classes that union is not possible, and she is still moping because (must be deaf) he does not want to marry her, only to kiss her and grope her a little...After a few times it gets boring…
And finally, I found the story cheesy. All the characters are perfect, loving, generous and gorgeous and in addition there is a cast of minor role that makes me lose track of the history. It must have been previous books telling their story that I have not read and that has me a little distracted.
I've found it unrealistic and shallow and rushed.
Not my cuppa.

2.5 stars because the book held my interest all the way through, even if the actual plot was unrealistic

With a competent format editor and line by line copy editor, this could have been a good story. Sadly, that didn’t happen here. Theme was beaten like a dead horse until I could not stand to read one more time how the hero felt he wasn’t good enough and started skimming.

That was a lot of fun. Next to no basis in reality for the time period, but still incredibly fun. I adored Althea. She might be more “modern” than a lot of modern women of my acquaintance, but I loved her fiery spirit and fierce independence. Ace made me want to break fragile things. He’s so caught up in his own opinion of what society and the world are, that he can’t see that what’s right in front of him is very different. The ending of this book is so sweet, and I’m so glad that this isn’t the end of the series.

Find her love

Loved the 4th book in the series! Thea a headstrong woman whose father was a Duke and know her elder brother Joseph. Oliver was a son of a coal miner, know a very powerful and rich businessman.
When Oliver meets Thea she takes his breath away. He knows he is so below her but they can not keep their hands off each other.
Someone is trying to kill Oliver and he wants to keep Thea safe, but when they are caught in a compromising position they are forced to marry.
He will do what is ever necessary to keep her safe but he didn’t realize that she has her own plans. Such a wonderful read!

Very good, as I have found all of Wendy Bella’s books to be. She takes a situation mst unlikely to have actually happened, and makes it most believable.

This book is the story of a self made man and a Duke's daughter. Ace Dillinger is an ex-prizefighter who has risen above his humble beginnings, investing his money wisely and forming business deals and lasting friendships with men like him from high society who know that to survive and thrive you have to invest in new industries and ideas. Lady Althea Ryder is a stubborn, feisty, good hearted young lady who won't take no for an answer when she wants something.

They meet when Lady Althea talks her footman into taking her to a bare knuckle fight, where no lady should ever be. Ace spots her and is furious that she has put herself in danger and knows he has to get her out of there before someone sees her and a full blown scandal occurs.

Lady Althea is fascinated by Ace, they have met before. He is in business with friends of her brothers. She is determined to spend more time with him no matter the cost. He know he is not good enough for her but cannot seem to stay away. What follows is a journey of discovery for both of them. Through scandals, life threatening perils and a love that could last a lifetime. Wendy's writing is beautiful, lyrical, sensual and so addicting. I loved this book and would recommend to everyone who loves a Historical Romance.

Love it

It was well written. Hero is strong individual who thinks the heroine is to good for him due to them being from two different worlds and someone is out to kill him and pushes her away time and again. Heroine has never found one like the hero who could stand up to her standards which she has set to those of her brothers. They are caught in a improper position and are forced to marry. They had differences they will have to overcome to be happy

What a lovely surprise! This last days I'm fortunately reading great novels, it had previously been a poor period in that regard :(
This romance is highly enjoyable, the characters are very interesting and charming and the story has a good timing, it keeps the reader interested and entertained! I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series, in fact I'm going to do it straight away!

Another one for Wendy great story though I would of love to see Thea in more action especially with her fist, but never the less fantastic book. Keep it up.

This is 1.5 to 2 stars for me. I liked these two characters, but I wish the story would have been better, more intriguing. The villain is obvious at a point and plainly stated at another so there isn’t much drama in that quarter. Ace lamenting on and on about his lack of worthiness is tiresome. Especially after you read Bella and Luke’s book and how he helps Luke change his perspective on himself. I was dissatisfied with the epilogue. It fell flat for me and is written as if it is conclusion to whole series. But there are three other books to get through.
I also feel like these books are out of order. I wish Hannah and Alex’s story would have been the fourth book and this one book five. I’m not reading their story because it doesn’t sound all that compelling due to their interactions and little mystery in book 2. I also don’t care about Ben and his story (book 6) so I’m not reading that one either. I would have read Daniel’s story, but it should have proceeded Ace’s story and not pushed to book 7 to the point I am not longer connected or care about Daniel.
My other gripes are repeated info and the lack of historical accuracy. The author takes many liberties for “historical.” One being these women who are unmarried are constantly left alone with men, no chaperones, etc. It isn’t just in this book. It’s also in the previous ones. Phoebe ends up falling under Ace in the middle of the road or sidewalk and he kisses her neck while in said position in public. How were demands of marriage not made after this incident. Wouldn’t she have been “compromised” or gossiped about for “scandal” at the very least. Ugh. Also how do these women come and go from the dress shop owned and run by Phoebe/Hannah/Alex and no one sees them or runs into them. Bizarre and not believable since there is such an emphasis of the stink of “trade.”
I’ll read more by this author, but I’m done with this series. Passing on remaining books.

Ace Dillinger is an ex-fighter & self made man that has risen above his humble beginnings by investing his winnings wisely in businesses & forming friendships & business deals with high society's titled men who know you must invest in new industries in order to survive.

A duke's daughter, Lady Althea Ryder will not be deterred from something she wants - she is stubborn to a fault, outspoken, feisty but kind. When she meets Ace at a bare knuckled fight that she talked her footman in to taking her; Ace sees her & insists on getting her of there before someone sees her & a scandal will occur. Althea finds herself very interest in her brothers' friend, Ace and although they have never personally met, she wants to find a way to spend more time with him. Ace knows he is not good enough to spend time with his friends' sister but can't seem to stay away.

The friendships, scandals, life threatening occurrences, romance & love for all times is a journey you won't want to miss! I love Wendy's style of writing & her characters are always ones you fall in love with & root for until the end. I highly recommend this book & all the others in this series.

great story of reverse snobbery

I love Wendy Vella’s stories and can’t put them down. I binge read a series and start another. She creates great diverse characters that appear in multiple stories so you get to see them over time and learn more of their life. This story is about Lady Althea who is not your usual debutante nor a shrinking flower. She is a fun, feisty, determined woman capable of many things. Oliver Dillinger is a self made man and one of the richest in England yet he feels inferior to her a Dukes daughter. The story revolves around how she educates him to get by his prejudice and falls in love. The suspense is created by a mystery person trying to kill Oliver. Couldn’t put the story down. Loved all the past characters return and how they integrated into the story. Oh yes there are typos, pronoun errors, names misspelled and sometimes misplaced but the story is great. If these bother you take off a star or two otherwise just read past them and enjoy. I did.

The lady plays her ace

This story starts out about Ace and Thea. Thea is the daughter of a Duke but Ace or Oliver, is the son of a coal miner. He is at a boxing match when he spies her in the crowd and approaches her and her footman. He is upset that she is there because it isn’t safe and ladies don’t go to these type of events. He allows her to stay but insists that she be at the back where she won’t be seen. When she gets ill at the sight of one of the opponents bloody, broken nose he takes her out, or he tries but fights have broken out around them and she gets knocked down. He picks her up in one arm and fights his way out.
She goes back to her inn with him in his coach but of course on the way they kiss. Thus an attraction begins. This was a lovely historical romance with only a small editing issue.

I was looking forward to this book after reading the previous in the series, but it felt like a lot of the plot of was recycled. A man lower in class than the woman he wants, pushing people away because he's under threat... it felt really strange because there was no reference to what happened in the previous book (where you'd think there might be some commiseration between the lead and the previous lead, perhaps?)
Also noticed that there continue to be editing issues that only the human eye can pick up that are getting missed (I volunteer as tribute?) which always take me out of the moment. Overall despite this I was enjoying myself until the ending, which had some 'peril' that was in no way satisfying in how it resolved. No emotional payoff for me. Overall, I'd still read another book by this author if I got my hands on in...

This book looked like it was going in the same direction as book 3 (Luke and Bella's story) and i was a bit disappointed about that. but just after 50% it went a completely different path and it was so good. So hang in there, it's not like book 3.

This was a historical romance story, but very different from your normal historical's where the ladies are prim and proper. I've love every FMC in this series and Thea is just amazing. She is strong and independent and very modern for her days. I love how she'd look at others of lower rank that her family, she never felt she was superior to them and would always put them at ease.

This is not a clean romance, so watchbout for the intimate scenes (they are not my think so I skip over them). The chemistry is amazing and heartwarming.

LOVED THEM BOTH : THE LADY AND HER ACE!

This got 5 stars from me because it showed the different times our heroine & her hero were together they shared love between them. Oh, they only knew it was an intense interest and longing for the other, at first. He, the son of a coal miner, who had earned his immense wealth they various things he knew made him non worthy for the daughter of a duke. She, a Lady, did her best to show him she was not snobby and did not think because of who her father was made her way to good to speak to others and love them. The two lovers go back and forth in a must read that I really enjoyed!

The Lady Plays Her Ace is a fantastic historical romance by Wendy Vella. Ms. Vella has once again impressed me with her storytelling abilities. She has provided readers with a well-written book and furnished it with outstanding characters. Oliver fought for his fortune, with his fists and his brains. Althea is a Lady and Oliver has decided she's not for him. Their story is loaded with drama, humor, action, sexy bits and suspense. I loved this story from the first page till the last and can't wait to read my next book by Wendy Vella. The Lady Plays Her Ace is book 4 of The Langley Sisters Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I TOLD YOU NOT TO LEAVE ENEMIES AT YOUR BACK! That's probably a bit over the top, but I will tell you that I practically cheered when someone finally called a magistrate!
Also I thought Will was going to be my favorite, but Oliver was a very nice temporary book boyfriend. I will say that I'm feeling a little shorted because I want more time with Joe and Penny! I thought I would get more time while we were discussing his sister, but we did get to hang out with Oliver's brother Daniel who is going to be lots of fun I can tell. I love this family and all their sniping at one another! Its so endearingly affectionate :)

This the story of Thea and Ace. Thea is the sister of a Duke, Joe. Ace Dillinger is a self made man of wealth who began life as a coal miner's son. He left home at age twelve and began fighting for money for money at age fourteen. He meets Lady Thea through Bella and Luke. He feels he is not good enough for the daughter and sister of a Duke. Thea has other ideas. When they are caught in a compromising situation, they marry. Ace finds it hard to relax into marriage because someone from his past is trying to kill him. He is afraid for his wife; she is afraid for him. Can they sort this out and have a successful marriage?

The Kindle edition is badly in need of a proofreader. The characters are appealing, although a little one-note (she’s an unusual Duke’s daughter, he’s too rough). The writing is utilitarian, with the occasional nicely-turned phrase popping up, but mostly run of the mill, with the author just churning the same tiresome “I’m not good enough for her” theme ad nauseum. I always get annoyed with authors who want to tell the reader about her characters, instead of showing the reader, by her storytelling, who the characters are and how they feel. While this wasn’t bad, it wasn’t good either, and I won’t be reading more by this author.

Another keeper.

Unbelievably excellent story that was tough to put down once I started.

Thea was anything but a delicate aristocratic woman and wanted to make decisions that SHE would be content with.

Ace was a rags to riches story, but still did not feel comfortable around aristocratic women and did not believe Thea and he should really be together.

Thea, not one to give up, fought for the man who challenged her -- not realising that it was love she felt for him.

A great story and series!

The author has the ability to take a rather predictable plot and spinning it into a full-length novel. Lady Althea, a duke's daughter, falls for a rich and successful businessman. Independent, the attraction they feel is real, but outside society's rules until she is caught in a kiss. Ace maintains his distance both before and after a forced marriage until she is endangered by one of Ace's enemies. An enjoyable read overall, but not as riveting as some of her other books.

Not bad at all!

I liked Thea a great deal, and the story held my interest. It needs better proofreading, and all-around editing; for instance, the hymen is at the entrance to the vagina, not somewhere deep inside, and that's a pet peeve. Still, it was a nicely paced tale, and worth the read.

Born to wed a lady

Ace was a hardened brawler who came up from the streets. Thea is a Dukes sister who has a heart of gold! There is smouldering chemistry between her and this self made man who thinks he is beneath her. They are wed and a enemy from the past wants revenge! This is the best in this series! There were a few typos but worth the read!

I didn't like this one as much as the others. I loved Thea. She's awesome!! But Ace was a jerk! I couldn't stand him at all. He treated Thea horribly. As well as her family and friends. He talked about the ton and nobles being snobby, but he was much worse!! Ugh! That was so frustrating. So, 4 stars instead of the 5 because it took him almost dying before he got his head out of his ass!

Feisty and Nerve Wracking

Thea is super feisty and the perfect match to Oliver. I’m so happy that they got together. I felt like my heart was going to drop from my chest at the end, but it worked out. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
