A beautiful and painful view into a world I wish I didn't know so well. I was concerned about reading a tale that centered around the role of the spouse in terminal illness, more than a little concerned. It rang true in so many ways, but now I do not regret taking the scary step, and would encourage all to read this lovely novel. I laughed and cried and felt deeply for the characters. Thank you, Barbara!

I received this book from the goodreads first reads program.
It took some time of reflection before I could decide what to say about this one. The main characters are in the awful position of watching their spouses fight cancer, and they are left to find a way to cope. The novel centers around the ways they found to cope with the cancer, their feelings, life, and death. I laughed, cried, cheered, and was appalled while reading. And I know that I will be mulling this one over for a long time.

I loved that Ferrer surprised me in Both Sides Now. I loved the range of emotions, the compassion and affection for her characters. Well done.

More attention went to Ferrer's other book, released at roughly the same time, and BETWEEN HERE AND GONE is a superb work, deservedly one of PW's top 100 of the year. However, BOTH SIDES NOW may be the superior work, a nuanced and detailed exploration of human relationships as they strain to breaking point, and where people turn for solace in their darkest hours. It's powerful, shot through with a much-needed charm, and rife with Ferrer's mastery over her compelling characters. This is a book to ...more

EXQUISITE

Life - peaceful. painful. lonely. crappy. afraid. REAL. . . but always there demanding attention. Barb captured it all in her exquisite tale. Read on, my friend, live and love.
