This book is a detailed oral history of early San Pedro punk, from 1977 to 1985, told through countless interviews with artists, locals and fans, all of whom lived there or lived through it.

The ensuing history is introduced with a short story told by Gary Jacobelly (of the band Peer Group) about his ventures around the United States in search of this new punk movement, a s

I am among many who have been waiting for this book (or something like it) for a long time. Mike Azerrad's Minutemen section in OUR BAND COULD BE YOUR LIFE and the Minutemen doc WE JAM ECONO kept hope alive and burning, but, despite having a weakness for oral histories, I was slightly disappointed when I learned this tome would focus on the whole Pedro punk scene, and beyond. I prepared to have to give it no more than four stars.

However, it didn't take long, especially with Ibarra's organization

This is a series of oral accounts of the early San Pedro punk scene and what it connected with at its fringes. The word 'punk' here may mean something far broader and less defined than what you have in mind too, that fact being a big part of the worth of reading this. The story comes together cumulatively, between the lines even, becoming more rounded and fleshed out as it demands that you make your own decisions about where the truth might lie when those accounts or the judgement assigned to th ...more

As this book makes clear, if you know anything about San Pedro, California and are not already a longshoreman, then there’s a good chance you got clued into the existence of the town by The Minutemen. Said band, who lived from 1979 to 1985, are one of the greatest and most inventive underground rocknroll acts to ever walk the planet, and they made shout-outs to their hometown one of their many stocks in trade. It’s therefore not surprising that a book that focuses its target on the San Pedro pun ...more

I've been a fan of the Minutemen for ages, but this oral history flushes out a lot of the details that were missed (for the sake of brevity, of course) in their documentary and also in Our Band Could Be Your Life. What you get here is a detailed recounting of the band's history, their records, their performances, and also all of the people and bands in their orbit at the time. To be clear, this book isn't just about the Minutemen, but the San Pedro punk scene as a whole, which is some valuable c ...more

This book was intense. D. Boon is almost a Jesus-type figure in the character-filled 1980s SoCal punk community, and A Wailing of a Town gives him his due. The story is all over the place in terms of organization, but it really gives the reader a window into a world that managed to thrive in spite of heavy adversity. Reading these stories made me feel like I was milling around at Pedro parties and barely escaping riots at early hardcore shows. If your eyes stay dry throughout the last chapter, y ...more

Focusing heavy on The Minutemen, rightly so, A Wailing of a Town is a history of San Pedro punk rock from 77-85. I knew nothing of San Pedro until I discovered The Minutemen and New Alliance Records. Both were also an introduction to Black Flag and The Descendents. The book is very detailed, almost to a fault, and relies on personal accounts and zine articles to describe the Pedro scene. A must read if you are into the history of west coast punk.

As well thought out, organized, and edited as you could hope for an oral history. If you've never been to Pedro, you'll want to see after this. As a friend said, this book connects with anyone who has been a part of a scene anywhere.
