This is one of the most important books ever to be written in regards to blacks and Mormonism. During my time as a member of Mormonism, I marveled at how the Official Declaration 2 (the last canonized document in the modern church) seemed to be the end-all and be-all of the conversation. I mean, sure it was great to know that everyone could receive the priesthood. Reading Matthew Harris and Newell Bringhurst’s book The Mormon Church and Blacks: A Documentary History helped me recognize not only the troubling history of blacks in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but also ways in which that history persists. Unfortunately, this important book is marred by some misleading representations that lead me to recommend reading this book with caution.

A tough book for any faithful Latter-day Saint, but a good history that expands our view of the 19th and 20th century views of the status of blacks within the Mormon Church that is often over looked.
