What holds me as a reader of poetry is the same thing that terrifies me about composing my own poems: truth-telling. A writer of prose has more words to hide in, more time to conjure and reshape reality. A poet confronts the truth with every single word.
For twenty-seven years I held my tongue
denied my truth
heard no love echoed in the sounds of people's voices
and I am aware now
that all those years
spent waiting for someone to come and rescue me
almost cost me my life

This is brutally honest, graphic, and heart-wrenching. I cringed and literally flinched the entire first 19 pages. Kira Lynne Allen covers absolutely nothing up. As the reader I was forced to look full on at something so ugly and disturbing that I wanted to skip through to a more comfortable place that I just had to believe was coming. I felt myself tensing up and my shoulders rising as I kept reading line after line of the horror of her childhood. My entire body was tense.

In the book Write This Second: A Poetic Memoir, the author Kira Lynne Allen uses poetry to recount the most horrific moments of her life as a victim of multiple sexual assaults.
Heartbreaking yet courageous, each poem stirred my emotions in a way I haven’t experienced in quite some time.

After reading these poems I wanted to save the little girl that suffered so much pain. I wanted to find the father she desperately needed and longed for. I wanted to tell her she is worthy and she is loved. And
