This was one of those books I added to my local libary hold list at the end of last year and apparently forgot to uncheck the "automatically borrow when it becomes available" box. Since it's less than 50 pages, I figured why not read it (and be ahead of schedule with my 2018 reading challenge, at least for a couple of days).

Not sure that was the best decision. This is the first book/story I've read by this author. It was most definitely the cute dog on the cover that enticed me to add this to my

The back story really puts the entire series into perspective. The way Peg was so many years back and the way she is now is poles apart. But then she also got the love she deserved so late in her life.

One of my favorite authors

I always enjoy books by Ms. Berenson and this was no exception. Excellent dialog, strong character building, and of course, the dogs!! Thank you Ms. Berenson for another lovely read!

Very short like a cozy mystery. This is actually a prequel, Melanie Travis is young just dating her future first husband Bob, but the author numbered it 18.5 in the series.

Normally I love the books in this series but this novella seemed incomplete. It did feel in some of the background about Melanie Travis but it still left me wondering about other things.

I've run across this series several times over the years, and the covers-- which usually have adorable dogs on them-- always catch my eye. When I saw this digital holiday short story, I decided to give it a try to see if the series might be something I want to read. I also liked the idea that it was a prequel; I wouldn't feel as though I were walking in at the tail end of a joke and not understanding the punch line.

I enjoyed "A Christmas Howl." Peg Turnbull is a character whom I would like to ge

Unlike Laurien Berenson's other books, this isn't a Melanie Travis mystery and it doesn't involve a murder. It is, instead, a prequel to the Travis series and involves Melanie's Aunt Peg and Peg's husband Max. After receiving an unexpected invitation to Christmas dinner, Peg and Max visit Max's long estranged brother Michael and his family (including a young Melanie.) Thinking that Michael had lost all his money in bad investments, and knowing that he had been cut out of his mother's will, Peg i ...more

Great back story

I have loved Laurien Berenson's Melanie Travis canine mysteries for years, and Aunt Peg is a favorite character. This novella is a prequel to the series, probably 15 years before Melanie's adventures begin. It examines the painful family dynamics at Christmas, a year after Max's mother passed away. It has some warm moments and some Poodle moments, but it really showcases Peg's natural nosiness and determination to learn the truth no matter what. It was a quick enjoyable read that

I'm not sure what to think of this book. I purchased it not realizing it was only 49 pages, not a full-length book. It states that it is a Melanie Travis mystery. However, there is no one named Melanie nor is there any mystery in the story. However, at the end of the book is a "sneak peek" of the newest Melanie Travis mystery, The Bark Before Christmas. I can only assume A Christmas Howl was a ploy to get people to see what her next book is. VERY disappointing.
Hmm a peek into Peg's Character

But this short ends abruptly and left me feeling cheated.
Not even delivering the puppies!
Coming from an Irish Catholic family that aspired to Lace Curtain acceptance, I've endured many a holiday meal like this. I had hoped to leave them behind
Was this written for a Holiday compilation? I cannot believe I wasted the last of my gift card on this.

Interesting but very abrupt ending

Nice little short story of family dysfunction and betrayal but the ending is way too abrupt for me. Would also have helped to know the timing of these events within the series

Somehow I didn't get the whole book only about 30 pages so my rating is extremely poor for the price it cost me.

Background on characters from the series. Well-written but not really a complete story.

I have read other books in this series and have enjoyed them, but this short story ended way to soon. I turned to page and nothing but a teaser for the next book.

Mel's aunt

This story gave insight into the family dynamics and Peg's relationship with her husband. She found out about her husband's family.
