Heir of the Blood King was a great read, especially for a debut novel. I was totally impressed with Mr. Cassity's ability as a storyteller. The book is well suited for pre-teen/teen readers but also holds an adult entranced as well. I see a faint kinship to the Lord of the Rings, but only because it is a group working together against evil, and that Cassity has woven such a glorious tale.
You are pulled into the struggles of Adam from the get-go. Soon you meet Talia and Donadier and the three, albeit grudgingly at first, travel together while trying to understand what is happening in their world.
The story tells of overcoming fear, rejection, peer pressure, and pretty much any other 'teen' type frustration, but not in a way that hits you over the head as a lesson.
I truly enjoyed this first offering from W.O. Cassity and look forward to the next installment.

My son really liked the look of this book so I decided to grab a copy to read together. Fantasy and warfare aren't really my thing but I thought it would be something we could do together. We took turns reading to each other, the problem was...when he went to bed I wanted to keep reading but had to wait for him to come home from school the next day. It was fun, fast faced and absolutely gripping. I loved the characters who all seemed to compliment each other although, I felt sorry for Donadeir, he always seemed to cop the worst of everything. I found the world the author created to be complex and enchanting (well as enchanting as Goblins can be) and the story was well written and easy to read and lose yourself in. My son is already nagging me to buy the next book.

I received a free copy from the author via Lola Blog Tours and this will in no way impact my review. It will be honest and unbiased.

The first thing which caught my attention was the book cover. I will admit that unashamedly and then the blurb pulled me in with the words - destiny, heir and prophecy. I can never resist a book with those elements.

There is no waiting period for the action to start in this book. I was plunged right into the midst of the chaos and was introduced to the 3 protagonists, Adam, Talia and Donadeir and the precarious situations they are in. Then on, the reader follows their journey from their village and their struggles to stay safe.

The story was too short, in my opinion. It felt incomplete though it was intense with the fight sequences. The narration was easy to follow with vivid imagery which allowed me to read it in one sitting. The views from all the 3 main characters added to the complexity with the revelation of their emotions and feelings. This is one story I feel which does well with no supporting characters. The pace of the tale was fast while the world building was good but short as far as it was shown. I am hoping to know more about their world in the next books.

The start does well with immersing us in the plot while the ending feels like a very big cliff hanger because the book is over even before the story is atleast quarter way through. That's the only negative I can point out.

I would heartily recommend this book to fantasy lovers with a penchant for sword and sorcery tales.

My one line review : A great but short start to a good fantasy series with a heir, a prophecy and destiny - all elements which capture the reader.

My rating : 4/5

My reread factor : 4/5

I was blown away by Cassity's ability to build a world that pulls you in and does let go. The story begins with Adam, a young man who is constantly hiding to save his life. He soon meets two others along the way, Talia and Donadier and at first they are not too keen about traveling together, but all are trying desperately to find out what is happening in the world they live in.
The writing flowed easily throughout the story and I loved the way that the author showed the bumps and emotional bruises that teens incur while growing to adulthood can happen in any world.

Young fantasy adventure fans will find this an enjoyable read. Adam and Donadeir are interesting, well-drawn characters that kids will relate to, and the wilderness/forest delivers the setting fantasy readers love and expect. There is plenty of drama and action, although the narrative description may be a little too detailed and extensive for the liking of those impatient to find out what happens next. I appreciated that the story, while being fairly action-filled, was not excessively gory or super-scary. The three central characters were likable and engaging, and overall it was good fantasy read. The two areas that I felt could be improved a bit were the dialog, which sometimes seemed a bit clunky, and the amount of narrative description. I would be happy with slightly less, but that is just my personal preference. Some readers love heaps of detail, so will enjoy that. This is an entertaining read which I recommend to all fans of the genre.

Lose Yourself In This Adventure

I was gifted a copy of this book by the author and halfway through the book I found out the book was going on tour and I immediately signed up to host it. I made no guarantee of a favorable review.

This was an enjoyable and fast paced read. I read this with my children and we all loved the story line as it was very entertaining. The kids were disappointed with how fast this story ended. The author captured us from the beginning and kept us in his grip until the end. Very descriptive and the imagery was very vivid. Children, teens and yes, even adults will enjoy losing themselves in this adventure.

Since we read it as a family we all agreed to give it 4 and 1/2 stars.

A great book for middle readers! Characters are ones that children can relate to, as well as bullying. An adventure filled with imagination, heart, and action. The book starts out fast-paced, thrusting the reader in a world of magic, elves, and more. Journey with the three young characters as they run from the ashes of their village and everything they have ever known. A prophecy hangs over their heads ... one that may change their lives forever. But as much as Fate rules their lives, will the bond of friendship be strong enough to change Fate itself?

I loved this book, the fantasy and adventure that ran throughout the book brought me joy and allowed me to imagine again. I for one role play a lot, and I have trouble with it, until I read the book. My role play style is as if I am writing a book because I love books so. This book was a amazing, and I recommend anyone with common sense and more than enough time on their hands read this wonderful piece of art! Talia is my favorite character :3

This adventure story was fast-paced, engaging, and fun to read. The characters are wonderful, and I really cared about their stories and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. The author’s approach to telling the story makes it easy to “see” the events unfolding. I believe younger (pre-teen & teen) readers would enjoy the story and characters, plus the themes that are addressed are done so in a natural and organic way. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

As a parent, I was pretty pleased with this book. It's intelligent and engaging for the tween age range. If there's one thing I believe in, it's encouraging kids to read by providing them with acceptable reading material.

Old school fantasy is a pretty safe bet for younger readers, and, as it opens on goblin band, you realize this story has a definite old school feel.

This story took me straight back to my old high school D&D days. It felt to me like a backstory to match three friends' interrelated characters. Talia is a strong-willed, stoic girl; Donadeir her old friend with hidden depths; and Adam, the black-haired orphan of uncertain destiny. The characters drive this story, though it is an exciting time in their world, with the Blood King's Guards on the loose and the mysterious heir yet to be found.

As an adult reader, I found the writing style somewhat basic and overly detailed; everything is described, instead of implied. However, for a younger audience I think it would be just right. The story appeals to lovers of classic fantasy adventure. I guarantee any fellow D&Ders will feel right at home!

And I have to say, it's worth the read if only for the fantastic twist at the end...

This children's epic fantasy creates a complex world with interesting characters. Kids with a penchant for magic, monsters, wilderness survival, and swordfights should enjoy this first book in the series. I sometimes found the dialogue to be a little too on the nose, violating the “show, don't tell” rule a bit too much for my taste. I haven't read a lot of children's literature lately, so maybe this is a genre issue. I also noticed a few misused words. All in all, however, I think for kids who’ve recently started reading chapter books on their own, it would be an enjoyable read.

I had a really hard time getting into "Heir of the Blood King." I am glad I got it for free as I would have been irritated had I purchased it. It is written about 13 and 14 year olds, but the language is a little mature for that age group, page after page is narrative, down to the smallest detail at times. I think skimmed a lot at the end and it never got better. As much as I hate to leave a less than stellar review... two stars, it was "OK".

My ten-year-old son read this book and absolutely loved it. He loved the characters and especially the action. He read very quickly, fighting me to put the Kindle away at bedtime. He will definitely be reading the rest of this series.
