This book seems on the surface to be your average Canadian independent lo-fi musician turned soundtrack extraordinaire biography, but the pages of this short read provide a unique and rather inspiring take on what music and sound truly are. There's a loving spirit coursing through the book, driven by Andrew Hood (whose musings on A Thousand Songs made me nostalgic for my first days listening to the album), an author who perfectly snags the necessary feel for a Jim Guthrie biography. Really wished I liked this book more. It wasn't the subject, an artist I didn't know of before I read the book, was really interesting. He went from a home recording advocate to the guy who was in the middle of a music scene to now making soundtracks and jingles. Guthrie's time writing popular jingles was fascinating and the discussion of making music for marketing needs was great as well. I would have really liked it if the book was better constructed.
