A primer on making medallion quilts with a modern flavor, this book showcases the work of eleven contributors as well as suggestions for incorporating elements to design your own and specific instructions on techniques. (One slight error found on page 114: turn that multiplication sign into a devision sign in the formula for cutting filler borders!) Fun, fresh, and instructional.

This is a lovely book. I have been making versions of the Lone Star quilt, which is sort of a medallion quilt. This book has many ideas and versions of this type of quilt, both traditional and modern designs. I especially like "Drop of Golden Sun", "Oviedo", "Wedding Bouquet Medallion", "One Step at a Time", and "Zen Medallion". Most of the quilters are new to me and I appreciate finding talented designers. I look forward to making versions of some of the quilts.

The Modern Medallion Workbook contains quilts that can be created step by step as outlined in the eleven project sections or can serve as an inspiration and jumping-off point. There are projects that have the aspects of "classic" medallions updated and constructed using today's fabrics and some innovative blocks. Other projects are modern in every sense. The photographs and color diagrams are sharp, clear, colorful and easy on mature eyes. Experienced quilters will be able to readily follow the narrative, while keeping the diagram in front of them, to construct bands, blocks and other components. Beginning quilters may need some online or in-person assistance to sew some of the blocks, but should be successful once they try a few test blocks as detailed in the tips and techniques chapter. The line drawing section of the book is invaluable for trying out various color schemes before buying or cutting or combining fabrics. I have already pulled fabrics from my stash and started playing on my flannel design board in anticipation of making my first quilt from the book.
