Over the years I’ve checked out many reference books on essential oils and how to use them. The 2016 book Healing Oils, by Schiller and Schiller, is one of the most concise and easy to use. It is no surprise that the authors have written six other aromatherapy books. It’s a pleasure to look through this book, formatted with color coding and beautiful photos. It’s easy to zero in on the information that one needs. Good use of white space, headers, and sub-headers make and the information about individual oils easy to absorb.

The book starts with a brief introduction to aromatherapy and how to find quality (pure) essential oils. There are sections on safe use of essential oils, and which oils will substitute for one another in a formula. Then, the formulas: these are organized alphabetically by products to make with the oils. Formulas for baths, skin care, body powders, breath fresheners, potpourris, lip balms, room fresheners, etc. are given. Easy how-to-make instructions are given for each product. There are also treatments for specific needs like insect repellants, travel comfort, sunburn relief and even dog-calming. The largest sections are on massage oils and mist sprays—the latter being a delightful and easy way to use essential oils in almost any environment. The formula charts are color coded, so that it’s obvious which category each formula belongs to, even if you turn the page.

The final sections are illustrated lists of carrier oils and their properties, a useful A-Z illustrated list of the essential oils and their scents and uses, and finally a list of specific conditions for which one uses essential oils along with a list of oils appropriate for each use. Again, these sections have adequate white space and photos to be both easy and pleasant to use.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a hands-on approach to learning about essential oils.
