I don't know why I didn't see this question earlier and I really apologize for not answering before now.

The second book in this series (Burning Cold) is in editing and should be out this summer (2016) sometime.

It will pick up almost exactly where book 1 left off and should answer some questions not answered in Book 1.(less)

Recommends it for: Paranormal fantasy fans
Sometimes you just need to get out of reality for a while and read a good paranormal fantasy. It is not my most favourite genre, but I really enjoyed this fun mythological/paranormal fantasy Midnight Burning by Karissa Laurel.

Solina travels to Alaska following the death of her brother, to organise his belongings and his apartment. While she is there she spends time with her late brothers best friend Val and his friends, and their employer Thorin. It soon becomes apparent that whomever killed her

Wow... this was AMAZING! I could not drop the book.

There was so much going on! I don't know how to describe the book without ruining any of the surprises.

Solina is a simple girl from a simple town. She’s comfortable working hard at the family bakery every day. When she gets news of her twin’s death, she finally leaves her bubble for the first time to take care of her brother's things in Alaska. The official reports said he was killed by an animal. The story starts with a subdued sister looking into the mysterious murder of her twin brother. She suffers from frequent nightmares after his death and feels disconnected and lonely.

She visits Alaska to take care of his personal belongings and find out what actually happened that night. People warn and discourage her from looking deeper, which makes her more determined to find answers.

After some life threatening incidents she learns that the Norse Gods are hiding in Alaska. < I love stories

I was really excited about reading this book for a couple of reasons: she's a baker (so am I), the majority of the story takes place in Alaska (a place I've always wanted to visit), and there's a mystery involving the main death of the main character's brother (I love a little mystery).

The whole story was pretty exciting, what with the twists and turns, and I love how the author writes, the words that she chooses to use. I am a fan of mythology, and it's always fun to see how different authors

I guess I'm in the minority on this one. It has really high reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, but I never felt pulled into the story. There were a ton of characters introduced early on, and yet I felt nothing for them. The plot seemed to drag and the dialogue felt "forced" to me personally. I made it to around the 40% before deciding I had no interest whatsoever to continue this one. I'm glad it was offered on kindleulimited, but it is nowhere worth the listing price of $5.99 in my

“Thorin—” Skyla began, but I signaled for her to hush.
“Like I said, I don’t want to know.” "

I would like to say that Laurel is a good writer with a lot of potential and I would definitely want to try another book by her… I always appreciate people who attempt to use the full breadth of the English language and doesn’t get trapped by the same words over and over… her story had an interesting premise and even some good twists that I didn’t see coming… and her description of Alaska is exactly how I remember it… However, and it’s a big deal, the characters didn’t add up and it made it hard ...more

The idea behind this book was great. An inexperienced southern woman traveled to Alaska to find out what really happened to her brother, and then weird things began happening. More was going on than she knew. Sounds cool, right? Unfortunately it wasn’t executed well. The writing was decent. It was well edited and didn’t have plot holes.

I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. Even a good story isn’t interesting if none of the characters are. Solina considered herself to be a prim and

This book was awesome! It’s definitely on my list of ones I’m recommending to folks right now. I was nervous the book would be more along the lines of horror when I read the cover, but instead it’s a delicious mystery with a great fantasy twist that you won’t realize until a little ways in. Set in Alaska, it had me itching to finally make my way up there because the imagery is gorgeous.

Solina goes to Alaska after her brother is killed in what can only be described as a crazy animal accident. Once there she looks deeper into his death even though most of his friends tell her to leave it alone.

This book started out a little slow for me but it quickly picked up speed. Between Solina's weird dreams of her brothers death and the way his friends acted once she got to Alaska, I knew that this was going to turn into a good mystery but I wasn't prepared for the creepiness that flowed

Wow! When a review starts off with that three letter word you know it was a good book! There she meets his co-workers whom seem to know more than they are saying. Only one co-worker, Skyla, who admitted to being interested in Mani, is willing to help Solina discover the truth. Midnight Burning is Book I of Solina Mundy’s paranormal/fantasy journey into the death of her brother, Mani.

She travels from a small town in North Carolina to Alaska and back again, seeking answers.

I love her new friend, Skylar, and think she will become a big part of Solina’s life. She’s an ex-Marine and backs down from no one.

The characters have distinct personalities and they shine through in the dialogue.

The dialogue is witty and snarky and I love it.

Having read the short prequel, Moonlight Falling, I knew I was already enchanted by some of the characters in this series, and trusted that I was in good hands with Karissa as my storyteller. Not being super knowledgeable about the Norse background, I was delighted to jump in and learn new stuff, but I admit to holding my breath for quite a while before the clues fell together, and the moment Solina’s true identity became clear, I was all in.

I really liked this book! Norse mythology and suspense enthusiasts, you'll get a real kick out of this book!

let's dive into the plot!

How did I go from a simple girl who works as a baker to being hunted all in a matter of days?
Solina Mundy is as normal as they get. She wakes up, bakes, craves for parent approval and loves her twin brother Mani with all her heart.
He's always been there for her.

Solina Mundy thought she was just an ordinary North Carolina baker. But when she goes to Alaska to investigate her brother's murder, she finds out there's much more to her, her brother, and her brother's friends than meets the eye.

Midnight Burning has a good hook: I am always a fan of starting with a dead body. Solina is easy to like and sympathize with, and her attempts to find out more about her brother's death—and how it relates to the terrifying nightmares she's been having about it—provide

I went into this thinking it was going to be a werewolf/urban fantasy novel. Because she literally dreams about a wolf eating her brother. And to an extent it was, but there was so much more happening here. And it all related to Norse Mythology. Which was great, love me some Norse Mythology, but at times it seemed a little too forced.

Thoughts: This story was told from Solina's point of view so we know as much as she does, which is nothing, other than her brother seems to have been killed by a wolf. There are so many questions that arise that remain unanswered until close to the end, which leaves you with a cliffhanger. The build-up to that cliffhanger was brilliantly written. Even with all the unanswered questions
