About the author

Margaret Tempest was most known for illustrating Alison Uttley's Little Grey Rabbit books. She studied at Ipswich School of Art and then the Westminster School of Art. She died in 1982.

A charming story beautifully illustrated by Margaret Tempest.The dimensions of the book are well suited to little hands.My only quibble is that the editor did not spot the misspelling on Page 11 where ‘though’ appears instead of ‘through’.

Wise old owl likes to sit in bed and read, and very little else really - unfortunately a dreadful storm blows down his tree and his books are ruined. He seems totally inept when it comes to house-hunting, and so the other animals set out to help him. Rabbit, Hare and Squirrel find a lovely empty tree, and set about helping Owl to move in. His books are dried out and he settles down happily.

Charming illustrations, including Owl in bed with a rather fetching nightcap.

I have been trying to identify this book for years. I remembered a book, gifted by my librarian aunt to me as a child, that contained an illustration of a squirrel with a red bushy tail and a necklace of berries. I found another of Uttley's Little Grey Rabbit books at a recent Friends of the Library sale, bought it, and searched to find and purchase this title. I couldn't be sure until it arrived but this is it! The illustrations are lovely. As with other books from my childhood, this one is not ratable by the adult me. Meaning I have a sentimental attachment and can't be objective.

Poor wise owl, his house has blown down in a storm and he is lost and wet and cold. LGR and friends find him a new house, mostly because he has taken up residence in the woodshed and might eat them. Quite the saddest and strangest of Alison Uttley's Little Grey Rabbit books.

Children's literature as antidote for a cold, cruel, grown up world. This is a good snuggly bed time story for when its raining. Except that it is ominously unclear whether or not Wise Owl will eat the Little Grey Bunny. There's some kind of moral but I can't quite grasp it. Wise Owl is the boss so you can either respect him or he's just going to make a nest in your woodshed without your permission? The illustrations are great.
