I finished this some time ago but...well...frankly I haven't felt like reviewing for some time. Thus my poor completed books just set there, pining for a review.

Sad huh?

Any way (anyway?) this/these books are surprisingly good. I mean I did go 5 stars. (By the way, please forgive any typos. I need to get a new key board, the letters are worn off the keys on this one and I'm a self taught typist so you know...)

So we are now up to book 3 and things are getting stickier, more dangerous and possibly

Book 1 was great. Book two was even better. And book 3? AWESOMENESS.

I can't tell much about the plot without giving things away, so let me say - Vince is even more badass than you can imagine. Alice is truly coming into her own. Roy is turning into a decent human being (!) Mary is still the Den mom, and Nick... I love me some Nick. He is slight more amoral than before but nonetheless a necessary part of the group.

I laughed at some parts so hard I snorted water out my nose. And I cried at other t

Another excellent addition to the series that made me stay up far too late reading (there was no way I could sleep with more of it to read)
This book had terrific surprises. There are twists in here which I really wouldn't have picked. You think it's going one way and it changes in an entirely different direction. I have no idea where the series is going to end up, and I LOVE that. I'm so sick of books that are predictable.
That ties into the mos

This series keeps getting better with every book. This book finds our heroes in training in year three at Landers and so much has changed for them since their freshman year. I love the way the author doles out the bits and pieces, character background and new revelations.
The audiobook is 41+ hours long and there is never a dull moment. The narrator continues to keep the characters voices separate and true to the characters. When listening to a story and I hear an unexpected voice and shout in d

I could count on one hand, how many multi-character books I have read that work so well you enjoy the POV of every character in the story. This series and especially this book is one of those. Usually you end up skimming through the chapters about some characters to get to the sections on the character/s you enjoy reading about. Very well done.

Very nice superhero prose. Interesting take on the coming of age of people with powers and how they interact with the world around them. Good characters and plot with some surprising twists. Very recommended.

Just listened to his one again on audiobook. The whole year is awesome. Not just the tests and the challenges overcome in the tournament that is midterms. But the way the people come together, support and sacrifice for each other.

Knowing the powers of their opponents, it is quite entertaining to watch how the characters figure out ways to solve the riddles their fellow Supers represent for the examinations.

But, the climax is just phenomenal. The final battle is epic and the Sons of Progress wil

short note, I have powered through the series back to back. Saying that I will say one thing about all the books as whole and which I hope continues into the last book. There is a set of how the book always plays out. get to school, classes, winter break, mid term, classes, spring break, final. Then between that the build of the over all story that's happening through all the books. Drew Hayes does an amazing job of writing about how these college kids deal with everyday normal school life, and ...more

Still a very good read but I think there was a little fall off from the last book. The first book was enjoyable but a little simplistic. The second book added a layer of depth to the fun read, which I found fantastic because it really added to my reading experience. This book was a little less fun. Things have become more serious in their world and so the tone has changed a little. In reality I know this is what is supposed to happen when people start growing up or have to deal wi

We’re back with the gang from Melbrook. And this year is going to be harder for them on more levels than just trying to pass their exams. Some learn the truth about their families. Some learn the truth about their friends. They all learn some hard truths about themselves. But this year seems to be more easy going for all of them with the exception of Nick. His rival from Vegas seems to be determined to send him sleeping with the fishes, despite Nick’s efforts to the contrary. All this culminates ...more

All the Super Powereds books are fantastic.

All I can really ask is why is this not a Netflix series? Drew Hayes has come up with a hero universe that could be on-air with DC and Marvel with 0 illustrations and much more realism. As you begin to understand the Super Powereds world, I think you can't help but nod and say, " Yeah, that's probably how it would work. "

Mini-Review:

This book had the best action that I have read by far. The story has become a tangled maze in a good way. I'm pretty sure that I know exactly what is happening but I am hoping to be utterly surprised by a different set of events. I am totally okay with being wrong. =D

Drew Hayes does a decent job of making clear lines and then smudging the lines in subtle & blunt ways. I am enjoying the journey, being a part of the growing experiences that develop and mold the core group of Super

This book still suffered from a lot of the same issues as the previous installments such as misused words and head hopping but the lead up the the big finale was really well done, unlike book one, and the characters, story and world left me wanting more. Hayes definitely took a bit of a darker turn with this book which I actually appreciate as the HCP kids are getting older and are now dealing with more serious issues than who is the strongest and who has a crush on who. All the kids are as great to follow as usual. Some characters are given more space than previous and the plot keeps thickening. So far nothing seems to be forcefully added, except maybe the reference to Corpies but even that made sense given the summer of training Hershel/Roy that really affected Owen/Titan emotionally.

It's junior year for the inhabitants of Melbrook dorm and they are down one man, although he's working on getting back. Another is under surveillance after the revelations about his father last year. A third is getting stronger, after a little guidance from an estranged father. A fourth is also getting stronger and more determined. And Mary is just trying to figure out how to keep them all together.

There is so much story in the book, I don't even know how to begin with a story summary. As every

I have to confess, this series has me thoroughly enthralled, and I am finding it hard to put down. The literary world is complex and interesting, the story line is suitably intricate and well spun, the characters are endearing and well developed, as are their growing and shifting relationships. This third book was a little more choppy and at times a bit more contrived than the second installment, though I still found it fascinating and enjoyable from start to finish. On the positive side, I'm ve ...more

Absolutely amazing! Drew Hayes keeps up the story/saga in brilliant fashion. Only negative/confusion is how, given what was said in previous books about how their free time would disappear in later years, some of the primary students somehow are now managing to hold jobs (kinda part of the program but not really). Oh, didn't care for Nick's nemesis or Ralph Chatman. Annoying!! But that is my own pet peeve.... especially in movies but also in literature. All that aside, and without spoilers reall ...more

Another Excellent Book

It’s hard for most authors to write well about the daily minutiae in a story. Heck, even Tolkien gets dry in spots. Somehow that never seems to happen in these books, which is amazing in itself, but couple that with great characters, excellent action, sweet editing, and adroitly handles POV switching, and you get a very well crafted work. Even the micro chapter format works well, as it gives you nice bite-sized bits to chew on whenever you have the time to read.

Outstanding!

Outstanding! Out of the three novels I have read so far this is by far the best one. Can't wait to read the fourth. Drew Hayes has quite the imagination. There are so many plots and sub plots I don't know how he does it all. Again another very long book but very enjoyable. I hope he continues with the Lander group after the fourth novel. This should just continue on and on for years like the Avengers and Justice League. If you love superheroes and lots of them then pick up the first

so I tried and tried to wait to finish this book, but I just couldn't put it down! Book 4 is on the horizon and I can't wait to read it! The author does a fantastic job developing the characters and you really end up getting attached to them. Great story and keeps you guessing which is always great. I still haven't figured out the overall mystery in the book, the author has given some small clues, but there is a lot still unknown! I've come to truly enjoy these books for what they are. The writing itself is by no means phenomenal, however there stories are engaging and the characters are unique and over all quite entertaining. He's created a world that is fairly unique even though the overall premise has been used many times.

That being said this book is fun while also taking a few unexpected turns. This book is very much character driven but as I said before his character are well swirled out and as a result I didn't mind

I really enjoyed this one also and am really loving the character developments along the way. They really are long books and this one took me about 40 hours to read. The author spares no detail and it really does build for an awesome climax. I recommend reading Corpies before reading this one which is a spinoff telling the story of Titan, Roy and Hershel's father. It just makes everything make more sense and helps slide a few extra pieces of the books into place. It was a great ending and you ca ...more

“Focus,” Mary muttered, chastising herself and her wandering mind. From her stereo came the soothing sounds of monks, vocalizing an ancient hymn meant to bring one closer to enlightenment. Credit where it was due, they were pretty good. Mary couldn’t remember ever hearing a bad singing monk, though. Was it just a byproduct of monkhood that one gained a great singing voice? Or maybe they had auditions before one got in. “Great, great, you want enlightenment, but I’ll need to hear you belt out some show tunes before we let you in.” Were there scouts out there scouring the vocal talents of a new generation and recruiting them to top-notch monasteries?” 4 likes
