This captured my attention from the beginning and didn't let go; I was almost sorry to finish it. I both liked and sympathized with both the H and h, even though I didn't always agree with them.

The H should have been honest about his entire life from the start and clued the h in, especially knowing how dangerous things could get. (AND THEY SURE DID!) What he went through was horrible but he kind of brought things on himself by not stopping what he was doing, especially when the h was pregnant. He should have quit after they got married. Despite how young and vulnerable the h was, she was still his wife, and he owed her the truth.

The h was letting her their five-year-old son become her whole life (She took over the antiques business and made a real success of it, but it was more a case of having to, not really wanting to, and she kept other people at a distance, friendly but not too close.) Her newfound strength and independence were really a shield around her heart and only her son got past it. She was actually dependent on him and if the H hadn't returned, eventually the kid would have been either a real mama's boy without a life of his own or else a real rebel causing all kinds of trouble.

As it was, he kind of stole the story from the H and h, he was adorable, smart, funny and at times a real riot! He was also brave and quick thinking for a little kid going through what he does toward the end.

The author gives you the POV of both the H and the h, which is always better because too many stories with only the h's POV make readers too inclined to take her side no matter what. In this case, you can see both their sides, and neither was totally right or totally wrong.

I fell for the "red herring" and though I knew who the villain was and didn't think about the old "hide in plain sight".

The story has a token OM (the buyer for the antique store), though there was nothing between him and the h, except an occasional business dinner. She didn't date or even want to during the time the H was gone.

As for the changes in her character, they would have happened anyway. Once she became a mother, whether on her own or with the H, she would have grown up, become more responsible and mature. Even if she hadn't worked, she still would have become a woman, not remained that clingy, insecure girl who more or less hero worshipped the H, because, thanks to her foster care background, she'd never felt wanted and always felt rejected. (Being orphaned young and having her older sister dump her and her brother at an orphanage sure didn't help. I would have liked a conversation between the h and her brother about that, but with everything else going on in the story, there was no time for that, I guess.) Had she remained the same, their marriage would never have lasted.

The H changed as well, after all he'd been through. His background as well made him who he was (self-centered parents who had him by accident, always regretted it and pretty much ignored him) and being a "secret agent man" gave him purpose as well as action and adventure. That was his top priority, but afterward he realized what really mattered.

I liked reading how their life together fell back into place slowly and with difficulty and setbacks, but there's no keeping soulmates apart, no matter what.

Worth reading!

Jessica Kincaid has rebuilt her life after her husband's sudden and inexplicable disappearance. She has raised her five-year-old son, Max, as a single parent. Life isn't bad. She's coping and her antique business is doing well. Then, one day, her supposedly dead husband, Pierce, shows up in her kitchen. He thinks he has just returned from the grocery store. He remembers nothing of what happened to him in the five years since he went missing. And then there's the complication of who Pierce really is and the possible danger his past poses to Jessica and Max.

I enjoyed this story. It was filled with emotion and interesting characters.

Five Years Lost...

Ex-secret agent Pierce Kincaid couldn't understand why his wife nearly fainted when he came home from the shops. Then he took a good look at Jessica - no longer pregnant, shorted haircut - and watched in horror as his five year old boy asked his mummy who the stranger was.

Events slowly revealed that pierce had been abducted. But that didn't change the facts for his wife. Her trust in him had been shattered. She couldn't understand why such a thing had happened; what hadn't Pierce told her - then and now?

Suddenly the search for the truth becomes a race to stay alive as his family were threatened. It was the race that could make or break his marriage...

This is one of my top books on my keeper shelf. It's about a fellow who goes out to the store but doesn't come back to his wife years later...and he believes he's only been gone for a few minutes! Great story! Highly recommend!
