When Emma Walker wakes up to what can only be described as the crappiest day of her life, she has no idea that the series of unfortunate events that unfolded that day were going to pave the way to her new destiny. Emma's recently engaged best friend, Brynn, calls for Emma to ditch her life in Chicago, and to come immediately out to the Big Apple to perform her maid of honor duties. What Emma doesn't expect is to find the man of her dreams in Brynn's social circle. Not only is he taken, but he lives in a very different world than Emma is used to. Will Emma be able to fit into this new life, or will she return back to where she started?
In this witty romantic novel by Katherine May, you will follow Emma on a life-changing adventure to New York City. Will Emma snag the man of her dreams, or just a really cute pair of red high heels?
*This is book 1 in the 'Those and That' series. Both books are stand-alones, and you do not need to read them in order to understand the storyline. There are no cliffhangers.
Katherine May is the romance author of light, HEA stories that tell about that first spark of love and the journey that came along with it. She currently lives in a small rural community in Colorado. Her life has an abundance of cows, laughter, love, and the sound of little feet pitter-pattering across her kitchen floor.
I read several of the reviews here, and to be honest I wondered if I was reading the same book? I got to 12% and had to give up after making numerous notes on my Kindle. I could ‘cop out’ and simply leave a rating, but I think that is unfair to an author, so here goes.
Page 1 Please. Not the dog poop. Exploding dog poop at that. I’ve had a lab – several in fact – and even now the memory of the stench (and it IS a stench) makes me nauseous. In two pages we were assaulted with: smell of poop, I-ate-something-inhumanely-gross exploding diarrhea, massacre of shit, deadly fart, exploding poo. Too much. I nearly dnf’d at that point but I took a deep breath (not easy when thinking about the smell of dog poo) and carried on.
Page 2 Typo. Surely someone – one of those ARC readers perhaps – should have spotted the … exactly fo6rty-five minutes…. typo?
Page 3 A change of tense from past to present. Damn men. I was done. Who needed a man anyway. I mean look at all these single Hollywood actors. I could do this. I hate it when that happens. It throws me right out of a story.
Page 5 Still more of Sadie’s poop.
Page 7 This was a really great picture of me, and I was keeping it. Oh god. She sounds like some vain, idiotic teenager, primping herself. And another change of tense – I mean, how many amazing hair days do you have?
Page 9 Emma is on the phone to her friend – her BEST friend – who has called her to say she (the best friend ) is engaged and she wants Emma to be her maid of honor. ‘ She laughed again and made kissing noises on the other side. Puke. Really?? Your best friend and you are puking because she is excited about being engaged and is blowing you a kiss? Emma is coming across as vain, selfish, exceedingly spoilt and immature.
Page 11 I openly admit to being OCD about certain things. Like numbers in stories, or people getting dressed. Emma goes into a shoe shop, lusting over a pair of very expensive shoes. We are told that she doesn’t even know how much they cost because she knew she would be crushed. But then she says to the sales woman.. I’ll take them Size eight please.’ AND SHE DOESN’T TRY THEM ON!! Okay, maybe she does, but in that case why doesn’t she say ‘Can I try these in a size eight?’ and we could have experienced the way the shoes felt on her feet, how she felt, standing there wearing them. But no. It reads as if she buys them without trying them on. DUH
Page 13 Punctuation: Maybe it was that ninja who missed me earlier, but ninja’s aren’t that loud.
Page 15 Emma has just broken up with her boyfriend and … all is fine. Hunky dory in fact. There is no sense of loss, or of regret. Nothing. It’s as if she didn’t care about him anyway. The dialogue has no depth, or realism. And another change of tense. Greg may be an ass, but he loved that dog more than anything.
Page 18 … my phone vibrated on the bathroom counter. I picked it up and wiped off the dew that had formed during my relaxing hot shower. Ignoring the poor writing there (dew?? It's condensation) WHO takes a mobile into a bathroom and lets it get wet???
Page 19 ‘Is this Emma Walker?’ No. It should be: ‘Is THAT Emma Walker?’ It definitely wasn’t Brynn. ‘Yes it is. With Whom am I speaking with?’ I asked in my most professional voice. Read that again…. With Whom am I speaking with? !!!!
I was given this ARC in return for my honest review. Now with that being said, you can always tell a story is going to be good when the author references Sex in the City. I mean who didn't love that show and secretly wanted to be Carrie Bradshaw or any one of her highly sophisticated friends. It made every small town girl want to reach for the stars and head to New York and conquer the Big Apple. Our story starts out with Emma, a twenty something year old who just had the worst day of her life. Being canned from her job and coming to the realization that her relationship with her boyfriend is now totally over, all Emma wants is to catch a break. With throwing caution to the wind, she decides the best way to cheer herself up is to breakdown and buy a pair of red heels that have caught her eyes many times. Once Emma makes her purchase her luck soon starts to change. She receives a call from her best friend Brynn, asking her to help plan her wedding in New York. With nothing holding her back, Emma decides to take the plunge and flies out to help.It seemed that our heroine's luck really did change when she landed in New York. With a little help from Brynn, Emma landed a interview for a prestigious marketing company and was quickly introduced to New York's faced paced life. Emma soon lands the job of her dreams and also is in the middle of helping Brynn plan her wedding but the last thing she thought she would find was the handsome Greyson Lyons. Greyson is everything Emma always wanted in a man, good looking, smart, has a powerful job and will be the best man in Brynn and Collin's wedding. But the one thing that he has that makes Emma cringe is Nora, his equally beautiful and powerful finance. However, sparks soon start to fly between Greyson and Emma. Greyson feels he can open up to Emma and be his real self. He has always been guarded and reserve but something about this Midwestern girl is making him open up his eyes to a new life. Emma starts to have feeling for Greyson but she refuses to be "That Girl", so reluctantly she backs off. Maybe it was brought on by a little threat from Greyson's father to stay away but Emma knows that backing away is the best thing to do.However one night Greyson finds Emma and tells her he left Nora and that his feelings for her are strong. Our couple spend one magical night together laughing, drinking and getting down to business, but in the morning Greyson receives some life altering news. Once again Emma must be the better person and let Greyson go. Can these two ever be together or will both characters have to settle in the romance department? I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book. Ms. May had me laughing withing the first few chapters. I mean who doesn't love reading about the main character having to deal with a sick and pooping dog? This book was witty and super romantic. I especially loved the epilogue because it was from Greyson's point of view. Oh and I loved how the red high heels played into the story. How you ask? Well I guess you will just have to read the book to find out. Hopefully there will be a second book featuring this crew. I would love to see Cade get his HEA and I am kinda curious about Emma's nerdy co-worker too. Well done Ms. May, I am a fan.
Emma really has woken up to one of the worst days of her life. She is facing a mid-twenties crisis and then to top it off, she almost has to force herself to be happy for her best friend who has landed on wedding roe. She is ready for a change in her life and as much as there is fear for the change it brings excitement as well.
I love that this book really portrays the notion that everything happens for a reason and that you are never given more than you can handle. The witty banter in this book is adorable and I love the innocent flirts that happen.
This book will pull a lot of emotions from you as you read. Anger, irritation, sadness and ultimately happiness. Everyone will get what they deserve. I can totally see this book turning into a series if the author wanted to go down that road. I want to hear more about Cade and his life in Cali.
Great story. This author has come a long way since her first publication.
I feel conflicted over this book. Two certain elements I really enjoyed: first, the idea that a killer pair of shoes could set off certain events that formed the premise of the story, and second, the main character's zest for living in New York (I have fantasized about that more than once). Other things I didn't really enjoy: the predictability of the plot, and even more than that, the poor editing/proofreading on display. The book was a quick, light read and good for a lazy winter day.
Katherine has done it again!!! I couldn't put this book down. I love that she has a steamy romance with a lot of wit and humour. How do you turn your life completely around? Just get a very expensive pair of red high heels and move from Chicago to New York for your best friends wedding!!!! I would definitely give this a read if I were you! Can't wait to read more from this wonderful author!!!
I'll be honest: If I ever wrote a book myself, it probably wouldn't be as weighty as this mousse of a book. But, hey, she's a much-published author (several books listed). I know well-respected authors that I don't think any more highly of their writing. And she introduced me to a term that made me laugh out loud--"panty-dropping smile." (Made you laugh, right?) My NOOK seems to be quite full currently of meaningful, meaty, nonfiction books. Not what I really want to read right now. This chick lit book fit the bill for today. What can I say? "Boo way, reality!"
Those Red High Heels is by Katherine May. It is a cute romance that makes you want to keep reading it. The setting is romantic New York City among the rich professionals. The characters are realistic as are their actions to a point. Small country girls generally do not have their dreams come true in New York City. Emma was having a very bad day and she hadn’t gotten out of bed yet. She could smell that her dog, Sadie Lou, had pooped all over the living room. Therefore, she must be sick. Now within an hour, she had to arrange for a cleaning crew to come in and clean and get Sadie Lou to the vet’s to be checked out and still make it to work on time. She managed to get two of the three accomplished, but she was fifteen minutes late for work. She had just sat down to check her email when she received a text. Hoping it was from the company in New York City where she had put in an application, she looked at it. It was from her friend Jess and was a picture of Emma’s boyfriend with another girl. She threw her phone across her office. How dare he! Even if they were taking a break, he wasn’t supposed to be out with someone else. He was supposed to miss her so much he would propose to her! Before she could digest this and get her phone, her boss came in and asked her to step into his office. Bewildered, she did and found to her complete dismay that she was being fired. This was so not her day. Instead of going home and moping, she headed for the shoe store and the red high heels she had been looking at. She felt she owed it to herself and bought the sexy shoes. Emma’s life began to get better when she flew to New York City to be with her best friend Brynn and her fiancé Colin. They were to be married shortly and Brynn needed Emma’s help. It didn’t hurt that Colin had his own production company and Brynn was making a name for herself by screenwriting. They swept Emma off into the society scene she wasn’t use to being with. She enjoyed it thoroughly. She managed to get a job and immediately began working on promoting a new novel. She worked with a marketing company and worked with Greyson Lyons. There was definitely a chemistry between them; but Greyson was engaged and to be married in a year. Greyson’s father warns her to stay away from Greyson as does Greyson’s fiancée. Is it Fate that they meet? Will they get together or will Nora win? Can she keep this turmoil away from Brynn and her wedding?
I read this book, start to finish, in less than a week. It would've taken me less time but I had everyday things take up time, like work. I enjoyed this book and that why I was able to get through it quickly.
Meet Emma and the worst day of her life - her dog gets sick and makes a mess all over her apartment, she gets fired, she finds out that her off-again boyfriend has been out with another woman... What else can a girl do to make herself feel better than to partake in retail therapy? Emma splurges and buys herself a pair of high-end designer red high heels. So when she gets news that her best friend has gotten engaged and wants her to come to NYC to help with the wedding planning, she realizes that she has absolutely nothing holding her back.
Emma packs up and moves to NYC, leaving Chicago in the dust. Upon her arrival, she stays with Brynn, her best friend, and her ridiculously rich fiancé, Collin. Brynn and Collin have a lot of contacts in their business world and are able to help Emma secure a job interview at a publishing house. On the day of her interview, Emma accidentally runs into a gorgeous man who makes her heart pump wildly out of control. After she thoroughly embarrasses herself and chalks up to never seeing her beautiful stranger again, she does - and he's best friends with Collin, not to mention the best man at the upcoming wedding. She's undeniably attracted to Greyson, but he's engaged and Emma is tempted to taste the forbidden fruit.
Through a series of events that can only be described as fate and the ultimate fairytale, Emma and Greyson are thrust into one another's lives. Without giving anything away, the story eventually had an HEA and is a standalone novel. Emma wears her red high heels, which help her feel fearless and confident, and they take her on adventures that forever change her life.
If you're the mood for a fun, light and good read, you should read this book. I was pleasantly surprised with this fresh rom-com and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more book by this author.
Those Red High Heels by Katherine May is a must read for all. Katherine May has beautifully written a story that is both realistic and stunning. Her main character, Emma Walker, is called to come out and be a maid of honor. But what she didn't expect what the double hit that fate sent her way. She ends up meeting a man within her friend's circle's who is the perfect man for her, but then there are major complications. Such as him not being single and that his world his a lot different than what anything Emma Walker is use to. Can she make it in this new part of the world or go back to where she originally started from and what does fate have in store for her?
Katherine May's novel, Those Red High Heels, is a contemporary romantic comedy that readers will enjoy. The story itself is highly unusual in that a small country girl has her dream come true in a big city. An everyday girl who has the typical life style that most readers can easily relate to such as being late to work, a pet dirtying inside the house, and a cheating boyfriend. The main character's life completely tumbles for the worse until her friend messages her to come help her out by being a maid of honor. This is where the novel gets interesting. And where things start to heat up. I loved reading the life of a normal girl and how real life can be tough as ever only for it to get better in the end. I would definitely recommend this brilliant yet funny story to readers everywhere. Readers without a doubt will fall in love with Those Red High Heels by Katherine May. I look forward to reading more by this talented writer and rate it a five out of five stars.
There are some book covers that make me want to read the blurb for a book, and I have to admit, this one did it for me. I loved the cover, and the name of this book. From the heels, to the backdrop of New York City! Super adorable, cute and fun! The main character is Emma, who is having a rather difficult day when we meet her. Her poor dog is sick all over the apartment, and she loses her job, all in the span of a few hours. Living in Chicago, she has always dreamed of moving to New York with her best friend Brynn. Who has already made the move years ago, Emma however opted to stay in Chicago because of her boyfriend Greg. Who is now, just a friend. So when the opportunity arises, she decides to make a go of it in the Big Apple! Her best friend is getting married soon and she sees a golden opportunity to make her dreams come true. What she doesn’t expect is to fall in love, especially with someone who cannot return that love. I love Emma and her red high heels! She purchased them in Chicago before leaving to start her new life. They are what she always told herself were too much, but they end up being more than anything she could have hoped for. They are one of the things that bring her closer to the love of her life, and she will never regret that purchase. This is a cute love story, with some twists and turns but I really enjoyed reading about Emma and how things turned out for her!
I am a sucker for love stories, but , wow! This novel goes beyond just a love story. From the first paragraph I was hooked. The heartache of Emma's break up in the beginning saddened me. But, after she buys her red high heels, I pushed my fist up the air whispering "yes"! She made me feel empowered. Connecting with the characters, picturing what they look like, hearing their voices, feeling their every emotion...that is what I look for. Her life had changed completely and for the better. I knew from the very second she met Greyson, he was the one. They had to be together. The ups and downs of her "love" life had me going crazy. Happy one second and sad the next. It felt like she was never going to completely be happy. But Greyson, oh Greyson! She had changed him. Made him realize he wasn't actually living, just going through the motions. By the end I'm pretty sure I was in love with Greyson! My favorite part was the tension of their love. My heart was pounding by the end! My one and only complaint...why wasn't it longer?! I could read their love story for the rest of my life! Seriously though, will their be another book?!!!
I was delighted to read this new novel by Katherine. Her first book, Blackhill Ranch, was set in the rolling hills of Montana, so I figured we would have a similar story but boy was I wrong! Red High Heels is centered around a young woman who is set off on a new adventure to New York City. It's a fast-paced, fun read, that will have you laughing out loud, but also have you questioning if Emma will have that happy ending. The storyline was thought out very well, and I also enjoyed that there was a book theme within the book. I love reading stories like that. The characters were well developed, and it was fun to walk around Manhattan through Emma's eyes. It reinforced the idea to follow your heart, and to do what is true to you. Not to do what others expect you to do. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fun, fresh read that will have you turning the pages until the very end.
Emma Walker woke up one day to what could be considered the worst day of her life. What does she do to turn the day around? Purchase those expensive Red High Heels she has longing to buy for a long time. In the midst of trying to turn her day around, Brynn her best friend from NY calls to say she is now engaged and needs her to come to NY to help her with her wedding. Emma sees this as a Win-Win since now she has nothing to tie her to Chicago. Little does she know that in the process of wedding planning she may lose her heart to someone who is in Brynn's circle of friends. Will it be the very taken best man or maybe the very manwhore brother of the groom? You will have to read to find out but on her way to discovering what Emma wants also requires both men to decide what they desire as well.
Note:I was given an ARC for an honest review. This book has a HEA and no cliffhanger. Its a very quick read and made me smile as I read it.
I have had this book from the beautiful Katherine May for the past few weeks, and haven't had the time to read it, with the kids in a gazillion things. So this was my go to read Saturday over Mother's Day weekend. I just want to say this was a great one Katie! You did a wonderful job of mixing simple country bumbkin with classy New York City to make it the real deal not just NYC on the ritz. I enjoyed the characters and the whole story kept me interested the whole way through. You can completely relate to these two girls and the men in their lives. And who doesn't love a book with a nemesis like twist. I couldn't put it down until I was finished, not even for a Mom moment. LOVED IT! The only thing I can say bad about this is that I wish it was longer.....or a series!!!! Would love to read Those white high heels...life after the engagement ;) Thank you Katherine May for another great chick lit!
Those Red High Heels is a funny light hearted book that everyone could enjoy once in a while. Having a book hangover and need something to lighten up your day? Read this book. Had a busy week and need something to relax with you with hilarious characters? Read this book.
Because that’s exactly what this book is, it’s one of those that relaxes you and makes you forget the stress of your week or day. It’s one of them where you need a laugh, this is the book for you. If you need a hot male lead and a strong female despite everything happening to her at the beginning of the book? This is for you. I literally can’t say this enough, buy this book and when you need one of these light hearted stories, read it. Or read it straight away, I guarantee you’ll feel a lot better once you do.
After Reading "Blackhill Ranch: A Lifetime Love" I couldn't wait to read her next book! This was fun, witty, emotional read that had me laughing on the very first page! I couldn't put it down, until I my Kindle froze up and I had to! I adored all the characters, and the drama too! This book will definitely have you on an emotional roller coaster ride, I will definitely have to read it again, and pass it along to friends and family!
I'm can't wait to read more of her books in the future!!!
I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
I think everybody needs that one pair of shoes that make them feel fearless. Those Red High Heels were the shoes for Emma, after a horrible day, she buys them to give herself a pick me up. This was a fun book, with witty banter. The characters were delightful for the most part, the one that was supposed to be the villain, was indeed a villain.
Those Red High Heels was an easy read and very well written but, it didn't have much depth. Every once and a while that is what you need, especially when you have book hangover. I would have liked to see more into Greyson's head. It felt like the author was telling me most of the situations, instead of showing me.
I really enjoyed this story. It was a very light hearted read with a predictable but happy ending. The story was easy to follow along with as I could only read in 10-15 minute times during my break. At no time did I ever feel compelled to stop reading the story. I found myself caring about the main character and wishing for her to find her own happiness. This book left me feeling happy and content.
I'd recommend this book to anyone that just needs a quick happy book to put a smile back in your heart and to feel that all is right with the world.
I did received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Katherine for sending me a copy of your book and I look forward to reading more of your books in the future.
**I received an ARC for an honest review**. I was so happy to get a book that I could really relate to the characters and the wonderful story line. I met my husband - my soul mate - in a similar fashion. Our connection was a box of CDs that were similar, including a limited release double CD that sealed our fate. I could totally relate to the crazy Nora and many of the other characters. I really loved the passion the author put into the characters. The way Emma didn't let herself get taken away by fame and fortune but stayed true to herself. And I enjoyed Emma's love with her Red High Heels. What women wouldn't feel invincible in fabulous shoes!
I loved this book. As a reader I always try to guess where the author is taking their story. Katherine May put in many twists I was not expecting. I loved the friendship between Emma and Brynn. They left me laughing. I read this book in just a few hours because I could not put it down. I want a pair of red high heels myself. I can not wait to find other books written by Katherine May. I did received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
My regret with this book was that I started it too late at night and couldn't put it down until I finished it! I loved Emma's character. She is not your typical lead character in a romance book, pining after her ex or desired lover. She had a strong sense of self and independence that is so admirable that I kept cheering her on with every choice she made. I was worried that there would be some annoying cliches but it was so well written with many twists that kept me guessing. It was such a wonderful, feel-good read that I will definitely add it on my "to re-read list".
I was given a PDF of the book for my honest opinion.
I LOVED it!! It had a nice fast pace that kept me engaged. I finished the book in one sitting. The characters where down to earth and were easy to get interested in. You wanted to see where the story was going because it's an easily believable story line. It made me want to go out and by a pair of red heels, hopefully I would have the same kind of luck to turn my life around. Buy the heel and the world will come. Definitely a good read one that easily a re-read.
This was so much fun to read! It was witty, captivating, and relatable - well, at least aside from the billionaire boyfriend and Manhattan best friends! Honestly, there were enough situations that you can see yourself having in this one and there are plenty of occurrences where you'll literally laugh out loud! While I love a good series, this author wrapped it up without a cliffhanger! This is definitely one I recommend, especially for those who want something to read in one night (yeah - I read it that fast!)!
Those Red High Heels is a delightful, funny, romance story that sucks you in. It is an easy read and the story line is easy to follow. The story makes you want to keep reading and the relationships between the characters are fun to read about! It is interesting how something as simple as a pair of shoes is important in the story and keeps re-appearing! The book is definitely worth reading and will make you feel good in the end! Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC eBook in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book I have read by Katherine May and it definitely won't be my last! This was a delightful romantic comedy about discovering your soulmate in a gorgeous pair of red high heels!! I don't want to spoil a second of the plot so I will just share that I loved it! Many plot twists and funny moments mixed in with steamy passion! I highly recommend this book!
I won this book at a book party online, and it was a very light and fun read. It's one of those books that you need to remind yourself that not every single book out there has to have some major angst in it, and that everyone has been hurt as a child and needs help. I loved the simpleness and sweetness this book had! Yes there were dramatic moments, but they were dealt with and ended up with a lovely ending.
This book definitely goes into my "favorites" list!
While the story is a romance, it was very down to earth and even serious at times, while funny at others. I can't say enough about how awesome this book is, so you'll just have to read it yourself!
I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This story is an easy read and at times funny. The story starts out with the worst day of Emma's life. What we learn is that those bad days can lead to something wonderful. I really enjoy the author's writing style and look forward to her next book.
So I finished this in one sitting if that tells you anything. I really enjoyed this book. I was at a place where I needed a feel good book with just the right amount of drama/angst to satisfy. I recommend this book. I'm hoping to see a book for Cade (Cough cough, hint hint...)
Downloaded this book yesterday and finished it last night! Loved it. This is the perfect book to read when you're looking for a great read that will have you flipping pages in one sitting. One of the first books I finished where I literally did not skim at all!
