First, a disclaimer that the author shares his personal experience, rather than a professional opinion. If you or someone you know is depressed, seek professional advice in addition to reading this book. Having said that, I greatly appreciated McNaughten sharing his deeply personal experience in spite of the shame that often accompanies mental illness. Since so many misunderstand depression, even well-meaning Christians, this book is a necessary reminder that depression can strike anyone, and that likewise, anyone can rise from it. McNaughten shares practical tips for soul-searching and self-care, and resources for relatives and churches. I especially appreciated his bold call for churches to address mental illness.
