This book got me through situations i had a hard time understanding as a freshman in highschool. Im grateful to have come across it! I truly believe it's a great book for highschool students who may struggle with anxiety or stress. It will help to better understand themselves and their body reactions. I found out a whole lot and ended up surprised by how stress truly affects us. I loved it.
“Stress 101: An Overview for Teens” by Margaret O. Hyde and Elizabeth H. Forsyth, M.D. is all about stress. This book is a well-balanced report looking at stress in our lives and how it affects our body in a countless number of ways. The book begins by explaining what stress means to us and then digs deeper. The book goes on to states what stress does to our bodies. It does so by putting the terms and new knowledge into a real life situation. By doing this, the authors are helping us understand stress in layman's terms. This book also covers how stress can affect the young brain. It digs into how an infant can be affected by their mother’s stress and how stress can affect the development of a child. “Stress 101” also explains that stress can affect the way our bodies operate. Affecting our heart, immune system, and stomach, stress can be deadly in some circumstances. This book also explains how stress can cause mental disorders such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and learned helplessness. The book also includes ways to spot these mental disorders and how to treat them or where to get help. Hyde and Forsyth explain how stress can occur from events not under our control. This might include natural disasters, terrorism, the loss of a loved one, bullying, abuse of substances, or being around substance abuse. The book concludes by giving multiple ways how to reduce stress and how to avoid stress. This book has provided me with a bulk of information regarding my topic. It gave me many more ideas for what to research and different directions for my topic. This book gave me a better insight to stress. It allowed me to understand that there is more to stress than what we commonly believe. Overall, “Stress 101: An Overview for Teens” by Margaret O. Hyde and Elizabeth H. Forsyth, M.D., was a quality choice for a book to expand my knowledge of stress.
I honestly think this book was terrible. I learned a couple of things from it, but it was mostly just saying the same thing over and over again. The book talked about how there is different types of stress, how to deal with it, and examples of each type of stress. When I picked this book out in the library I was hoping it would be a lot more interesting, but it was almost like a text book about stress, and just stated facts. It honestly did not help me see a different look on how to deal with stress like I was hoping.
Great explanations, some good remedies, but overall it was very beneficial. I have a lot more answers and several things wanting to research about more.
