I liked this one. For those who don't like books where the H/h have a sexual encounter almost before they exchange names you should avoid this one. They in fact have a one night stand the first time they meet and really don't know each other. This is not usual behavior for either of them and as the h, Ellie is masked as it's a masked ball she refuses to tell Sam, the H, her whole name and doesn't remove her mask. She also makes him promise that if they ever meet and he recognizes her that he must never acknowledge they've ever met. As she knows he's likely to take over the bank she works at she knows that they may meet again. As it turns out Ellie becomes Sam's P.A. and she works for him for a month with out him ever aknowledging that he recognizes her, which frankly is beginning to irritate her. I like Ellie. She's strong, intelligent, good at her job and well liked by her friends and coworkers. I like the chemistry between Sam and Ellie, I like Sam's match making mama, and I like that the nasty OW (Sam's ex-wife)isn't really that bad. I thought this was a fun, fast read with just enough angst to make it interesting.
A "Greek God" in every sense, Sam is proud, very much the alpha but he has a well "hidden sensitive side" when it comes to Ellie his personal PA. You see, they actually at one time were two `Strangers in the Night" who shared an incredible night of passion. Months ago, they met at a company masquerade ball and they were so drawn to each other and acted on that attraction. However, Ellie made Sam promise not to remove her masque and if he in the future were to recognize her, he was to never mention their night of passion and Sam agreed because he knew Ellie would run!
Ellie has worked for the bank for years, promoted several times and her main goal is to have enough money saved to quit her job and have a child before it is too late. As far as relationships, Ellie's success rate is "zero" so she plans to have a procedure in order to achieve her goal. However, when she is given a promotion to be Sam's PA with an increase in salary she accepts. However, he is a threat to everything she wants and she's scared. Sam pulls Ellie like a magnet; it is actually painful and a couple of times she gives in to her desire and throws caution to the wind. However, it all backfires for both of them.
This was an incredible love story and at times hard to read as you watched Ellie and Sam's struggle. Sam in a way lives by the old Greek ways, at one time he was married and hurt so he has trust issues and his strong feelings for Ellie confuse him. Whereas, Ellie is hurt by Sam's comments, actions and yearns for him to see her as the person she really is and she feels "used" and decides to move forward, which means leaving Sam and the bank she loves.
Heart breaking? Yes! However, you will not want to miss this wonderful romance and you will want to read more of Anna Clary's books. Congratulations Anna on this spectacular book; I can't wait to read your next Presents!
This started off great -- several times it looked like the plot was going to be stupid and then it wasn't! Unfortunately, everything went off the rails eventually.
Ellie and Samos share a passionate night while she's masked and incognito. A month later, she's working as his PA, and pissed that he doesn't seem to recognize or remember her. But Sam is merely respecting her demand that he never acknowledge that night in any way, while desperately trying to think of a way to get her to release him from his promise.
It's kind of a rambling plotline, with lots of headhopping, and the main characters are very frustrating. Ellie keeps making strict demands on Sam and then being angry when he complies. She's impulsive and irrational and refuses to take responsibility for her her actions. And she lies for no other reason than to keep the plot going.
Sam's got issues too. He's supposed to be extremely ethical, yet allows Ellie to resign her job over their relationship, and gets ticked at the slightest sign that she might put her career ahead of him (while offering her nothing concrete in the way of a relationship). I still liked him better than Ellie, because he seems to genuinely care about her, damned if I know why.
Despite its flaws, there was a freshness and emotionalism to the story that I liked; it's close to 3 stars.
The “meet cute” at a masked party turns into (as the heroine thinks of it) the “Night of Nights”! Would this be OK in real life? Well, it *happens* in real life but maybe wouldn’t be celebrated. However, in the fantasy world of HP-landia, it works out wonderfully. I’m not sure if I’ve read other output from Anna Cleary, but I may look for more, since I enjoyed this one. One thing, I don’t think salubrious means what this author thinks it does. Or maybe it has an extra-dictionary meaning in Australia!
Ellie breaks loose a bit at a party and sleeps with Sam, having the best night of her life. But she makes him swear not to discuss it ever again. 4 months later and Ellie is now Sam's PA and Sam is still holding true to his promise, even though he'll do whatever it takes to get Ellie back into his bed. He finally gets his cue and goes about breaking down those professional barriers and getting to know her on a personal level. Ellie can't quite believe that a man like Sam, wealthy and sophisticated, could really be interested in a relationship with a woman like her...which is why she's sure it's not a relationship she wants. And then when their passion gets in the way of their professional working relationship, something's gotta give - and Ellie doesn't appreciate that it's her. But Sam's beginning to see that that might have been the last straw for her and that he might have lost his chance for a future with Ellie.
This has good starting potential and was going along quite swimmingly until things kinda went crazy with Sam's over-reaction to their passion in the workplace. At that point it became a bit too frustrating. The angst was great because of it, but the frustration with the two of them lashing out at each other because they're each trying to protect themselves (it's mostly their pride they're protecting btw) was a bit much. Ellie was more frustrating than Sam, but he gets absolutely pissy in his rants. And I honestly couldn't figure out his reasoning...at first I was sure he was secretly in love with her, then I realized he just wants her til they get the passion out of their systems, then he claims he was in love but afraid of pressuring her too soon... And I really couldn't understand how he could apparently love her so much as to buy a bank in order to be with her but then force her to leave the job she loves so they can be together. I'm honestly surprised she took him back after that little maneuver. Ellie just keeps coming up with reasons not to give Sam a chance, watches him get angry, wishes she could go back and then does it again. And she'd be all mopey and upset that he was angry with her after she rejected him. Again. I will say that the two of them had some fantastic chemistry and a tendency to just go at it wherever they were...and the scenes were well written to where the passion leapt off the page. It was also rather refreshing to see a OW/ex who was not an evil person, but definitely misguided maybe. I do wish the book had a bit more closure time in it...maybe some time for her to explain the nature of her concerns about pregnancy, Sam's intentions for the bank, maybe him reiterating how sorry he is that he got her sacked...

I got this in a bundle and wanted to review it here. Samos is the newest owner of the bank that Ellie works as PA. Their chemistry ignited fast. He ended up releasing her, i.e. fired. She was devastated. She had been working there for a very long time. She was left with insecurities that had her turning him away. He wanted to continue the affair but she rebuffed him. Can he win her back? Will their fire become more or just a flash in the pan?
