If, like me, you loved Murdoku Volume 1, then this sequel will be right up your alley! In fact, I consider “Murdoku Volume 2: Back in Time” to be superior in every way to the first volume. (I’m already clamoring for the third volume of puzzles, to be released in October.)
Murdoku Volume 2 is a significant improvement over its predecessor. Several shortcomings from the original volume were fixed and new features were included to add spice, variety, and challenge to the puzzles.
To begin with, one of the shortcomings in Volume 1: The puzzle grid did not have any squares blocked off, requiring the reader to block squares that were occupied in the puzzle. This is fine, except that on more than one occasion I overlooked a potted plant or a desk and failed to block the corresponding square on the grid, with the result that I was either unable to solve the puzzle without peeking in the back to discover my error or that I tricked myself into a logical contradiction. This could be remedied by taking more care and exercising more attention to detail, but was still inconvenient. The second shortcoming is that the reader also had to invent notation for chairs and cars and other “special” squares, which could look sloppy or become confusing. Both of these problems were fixed in Volume 2: the puzzle grid shaded in non-occupiable squares and had a notation system for the various types of “special” squares. This made the puzzles much more convenient and user friendly!
The final flaw from Volume 1 was that the puzzles progressed in difficulty from easy to quite hard over the course of all 80 puzzles. This is all well and good— variable levels of challenge are absolutely necessary. But the way this was done meant that the first 45 puzzles were almost boringly easy, and the last ten or so puzzles could be maddeningly difficult back to back to back. In Volume 2, the puzzles are broken into thematic “chapters,” and the difficulty progresses from easy to hard in each chapter. This means that the really tricky puzzles are spread out, and then the difficulty level resets at the end of each chapter, giving a little mental breathing space. This made the puzzles much more engaging.
New features in this volume include the aforementioned thematic chapters, which add a sense of cohesion and unity to the puzzles, and make it possible to include an overarching story arc in the same vein as the Murdle puzzles. (In this case, a detective solves a crime in a lab with a Time Machine and gets thrust backwards in time, navigating through the millennia trying to find his way back to the present.) I like the overall concept; it added a taste of the exotic and some atmosphere, which made the puzzling and reading experience much more enjoyable… but I’m a sucker for the right kind of atmosphere. I especially adore ancient Egypt, the European Medieval period, and all things pirate, so this was a much appreciated touch.
Finally, each chapter (and this was a stroke of brilliance!) introduced a new rule. In one chapter, there were special “glyph” squares that, if occupied, made certain demands. In another chapter, characters were restricted to Noble areas or Peasant areas (except for the Knights who could be anywhere). In another, there were a certain number of unknown “outlaws” amongst the suspects who needed to be identified to solve the puzzle correctly. These fun new additions kept the puzzles interesting and stopped them from becoming repetitive.
In short: “Murdoku 2: Back in Time” is a blast! It’s even better than the original both in terms of setting and the in the diversity and quality of the puzzles. I can hardly wait for Murdoku Volume 3 to be released! I’ve already pre-ordered my copy.

July 16, 2026A este, até o mais novo se juntou. Gostei que tivessem adicionado temas e enigmas extra (descobrir os bandidos, por exemplo). Tirando dois ou três puzzles que me enervaram por parvoíce minha (depois de ler dezenas de vezes a mesma pista, não tinha ainda percebido que não estava a ler bem 🤦🏻♀️), foi um excelente exercício mental e neste segundo volume já estava muita mais oleada.
Continua a haver um ou outro detalhe que se perdem na tradução, além de que nem sempre os nomes são perceptivelmente de homem ou de mulher. Aparte isso, espero que haja mais volumes deste vício.

If you know me, you know I love a puzzle book! I enjoyed Murdoku Volume 1, but I LOVED Murdoku Volume 2. The theming for each section, plus additional challenges and roles used to satisfy each series of clues, was a delight. The subtle changes from era to era helped keep the puzzles fresh. It's also nice that the answer key explains each solution clearly so you can easily check your work.

Some good brain training! I did not do them all or all the time periods, as at a certain point, it became too difficult for me. Will return to it in quiet evenings.

Toen de eerste Murdoku uitkwam, had ik deze uitgepuzzeld voor ik het wist. Ik kon dan ook niet wachten om dit tweede deel, Murdoku: Terug in de tijd, op te pakken! Murdoku is een soort sudoku meets Cluedo. In dit boek zijn er weer 80 nieuwe crimescènes waarbij het aan de puzzelaar is om de dader te vinden. Extra leuk aan deze versie is dat we letterlijk terug in de tijd gaan. Van de Middeleeuwen tot het oude Egypte: alles komt voorbij in dit boek.
Het boek begint met een duidelijke uitleg over hoe je de puzzels moet oplossen. Zo bevindt iedere persoon zich in een andere kolom en rij, kunnen zich geen personen bevinden op vakken waar iets op staat (bijvoorbeeld een boom of boekenkast) en ligt het slachtoffer in het laatst overgebleven vak. De persoon die met het slachtoffer in dezelfde ruimte ligt, is de dader. Stapsgewijs word je in een voorbeeld meegenomen waarin wordt uitgelegd hoe je de puzzel kunt oplossen. Daarnaast bevat het boek een lijst met objecten en een trefwoordenlijst.
Het leuke aan deze editie is dat we sprongen maken in de tijd. En met ieder tijdperk komen er ook weer nieuwe aanwijzingen bij. Zo gaat het eerste hoofdstuk over de Middeleeuwen en is elk personage een dorpeling, edele of ridder. Deze personages hebben weer hun eigen regels (zo kan een dorpeling zich niet in het gebied van een edele bevinden en kan een ridder zich overal bevinden). Dit zijn alweer extra aanwijzingen waar je als puzzelaar mee aan de slag kunt. Ieder tijdperk heeft andere regels, waardoor de variatie in het boek aanwezig blijft.
En dan is het tijd om zelf te puzzelen! In totaal staan er 80 puzzels in het boek, die eenvoudig beginnen maar steeds moeilijker worden. Aanwijzingen die je bijvoorbeeld kunt krijgen, zijn: Adam zat op een paard, Bram bevond zich in een hoek van de tuin en Cora stond in een modderplas. Al puzzelend kun je personen plaatsen en daardoor andere posities uitsluiten, tot er uiteindelijk nog één vakje overblijft: dat van het slachtoffer. Als het goed is, heb je dan ook de moordenaar te pakken. Achter in het boek zijn de antwoorden te vinden, met nog een korte tekstuele toelichting voor het geval je vastloopt. Naast de daadwerkelijke puzzel bevindt zich een ‘kladpapiertje’ waarop je de mogelijke personen die in een bepaald vak kunnen horen, kunt bijhouden.
De eerste versie heb ik verslonden en ook met deze editie ben ik al aardig op weg. Ik vind de extra spelregels en tijdperken een erg leuke toevoeging. Helemaal opgaan in een spannende thriller is mijn favoriete manier om te ontspannen, maar ik maak ook heel graag verschillende soorten puzzels. Onlangs kreeg ik van Uitgeverij Lannoo de kans om kennis te maken met de puzzelboeken van Murdoku.
Tot mijn grote verbazing kreeg ik zelfs beide puzzelboeken toegestuurd, samen met een heel leuk paar sokken. Zoals de naam het al zegt, los je moordmysteries op als een sudoku.
Beide puzzelboeken beginnen met uitgebreide en duidelijke instructies. Op het eerste zicht lijkt dat misschien veel, maar eigenlijk is de theorie logisch en helder uitgelegd. Na enkele puzzels was ik er helemaal mee weg.
Vanaf de tweede puzzel is er plaats voor notities zodat je niet meteen in het grote vak moet noteren en eventueel corrigeren. Bij sommige puzzels is het meteen duidelijk waar je een verdachte kan plaatsen en die initialen kon ik wel meteen in het grote vak noteren.
De puzzels zijn enorm verslavend. Het is super leuk om de mysteries op te lossen en wanneer je er enkele na elkaar goed hebt, wil je blijven verder puzzelen. Dat ze leuk en verslavend zijn, betekent niet dat het ook makkelijk is om ze op te lossen. Naar mate je vordert, worden de puzzels moeilijker en werd het notitiegedeelte bij mij heel wat rommeliger.
Bij het tweede Murdoku-puzzelboek (Terug in de tijd) vond ik de puzzels sneller moeilijk worden. Zo heb je daar per deel trouwens een speciale regel, wat natuurlijk een extra uitdaging vormde. In dit puzzelboek werden de niet beschikbare vakjes trouwens al grijs gekleurd in het notitiegedeelte. Hierdoor weet je in één oogopslag waar je geen personages kunt neerzetten.
De meeste puzzelboeken die ik heb zijn zwart-wit geprint. Dat doet uiteraard niets af aan het puzzelplezier, maar ik vond het leuk om ditmaal eens puzzelboeken in kleur te hebben. Daarnaast is de vormgeving heel erg origineel en mooi om naar te kijken.
Puzzel je graag? Dan kan je aan de slag met de uitdagende moordmysteries van Murdoku. En zijn ze met momenten net iets te uitdagend, dan kan je toch even bij de oplossingen spieken om verder te kunnen puzzelen. Zelf heb ik al heel wat gepuzzeld in beide boeken. Een aantal mysteries moeten nog opgelost worden, ideaal om dat tijdens deze warme dagen af te wisselen met lezen!

Si os apasionan los juegos de lógica, los acertijos de detectives y queréis poner a prueba vuestras neuronas de una forma súper divertida, tenéis que subiros al tren de la «murdokumanía». No estamos ante una novela al uso, sino ante un librojuego interactivo que fusiona de manera brillante la mecánica lógica del sudoku con el suspense de los enigmas.
☀️ Es una propuesta absolutamente ideal para el verano. Todos esos nostálgicos que de pequeños esperábamos con ganas aquellos míticos cuadernillos de Vacaciones Santillana, vais a disfrutar con este formato como auténticos enanos. Tiene ese puntito adictivo de los pasatiempos estivales de toda la vida, pero elevado al siguiente nivel. El compañero perfecto para devorar bajo la sombrilla de la playa o junto a la piscina 🏖️
🕰️ La premisa es súper original: una máquina del tiempo nos arrastra a través de cinco escenarios históricos (la Edad de Piedra, el antiguo Egipto, la Edad Media, la Edad de Oro de la piratería y el Lejano Oeste). En cada época nos esperan pequeños casos y ambientaciones donde nuestra misión será colocar a los sospechosos en la cuadrícula correcta para descubrir al asesino. La regla de oro es la del sudoku: solo puede haber un personaje en cada fila y en cada columna. Me ha encantado que, aunque sea un libro de pasatiempos, cada uno de los 80 acertijos incluya pequeñas píldoras narrativa humorística que te sumergen por completo en el misterio.
📈 Es un desafío fantástico que va avanzando de forma gradual, empezando por retos más sencillos hasta llegar a auténticos rompecabezas que te obligan a exprimir el cerebro al máximo. Ha sido un aliado perfecto para desconectar un rato cada día.

I had high hopes for this book, as I like puzzles (but not Sudoku) and this book has beautiful color illustrations. The easier puzzles were quite fun, but then they became more complex and the characters were often placed in locations without adequate explanation of why they were there and not in 2 or more other possible locations. This volume had better instructions than Volume 1, but I found it just as frustrating. I won’t be buying Volume 3.

I was so surprised to not only see volume 2 but volume 1 included in my giveaway. Thank you to the publishers!! That was too kind. I worked my way through book 1 and I’m hooked. I started volume 2 and am obsessed with the 80’s theme. I hope that they continue to create these! Perfect before bed puzzles!

Such a fun brain book. My daughter loves doing them with me. Sometimes we do them as a family. It’s like sudoku and clue mixed together.
