Captures life on a South Carolina sea island before the arrival of resort culture. This documentary includes photos of family gatherings, ox-carts, crabbing, children at play, church services, and the toils of everyday existence independent from many conveniences of modernity.
Alexander Murray Palmer Haley was an American writer. He is best known as the author of Roots: The Saga of an American Family, and of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, the latter of which he wrote in collaboration with Malcolm X.
I find these photographs very inspiring on different levels, especially when knowing some of the story behind them. I was privileged to have the opportunity to interview the photographer and spend the better part of an hour chatting with her after listening to her lecture. She is an amazing person and so is her work.
Knowing that these photos were taken when I was alive and of a culture that no longer exists really makes this a hard hitting book with a strong impact. An inspiring work. I would love to have met these people.
