I love this book because it give me hope for all those who have not saved for retirement - look it up, its a lot - and I want to send them all this book. I read this book in my 20s so it may be a bit early to begin applying all of these principles but most of them still apply to me and can be practices as I continue to save for retirement.

What I really appreciate about this book is the focal point of being prepared for anything when many are going to feel vulnerable. It helps explain investing

It is very wise to start planning for retirement as soon as possible, because there is no too early when it comes to that.
This is a very good guide precisely for that. The author lays out some great strategies, lots of excellent tips and advice on investing money, saving up and building what you need for the retirement. It is easy to follow and understand everything he writes about and a lot of it is really common sense advice. But, sometimes you need someone to point it out, even if it is just

The “All-Weather Retirement Portfolio” must be read by all! It is absent of hype and full of practical explanations and examples. I liked that the author – R. Thurman – uses his clients (little old ladies) to help in illustrating real life scenarios.

Thurman simplifies the lingo and clearly spells out the recipe to make up a strong retirement and investment portfolio. The advise that he gives is delivered in a clear-cut and humane way that is very helpful. The research is there and he also provid

The author, an American CFA, provides some useful advice on how to structure your investment portfolio to provide a stable income through even the most turbulent of markets. The book is well-researched and includes detailed instructions about how a 5.7% safe withdrawal rate can be achieved through variable asset allocation tables which are based on historical stock market studies. Personally, I'm not as confident in the American stock market performance continuing to match the last 100 years. ...more

Retirement Guide!
The book is based on the topic of investment for retirement, but it focusses on the novice or untrained investor. It explains the difference between investing while you’re working and while you are retired. It answers many questions like how much you should invest, how can you protect your investment from economical changes, life changes and be prepared for the worst in your life. A good resource for anyone and highlights key questions and provide reasonable answers.

Really Good Strategy for Making Your Money Last

Very well explained. The concept of the perfect storm, especially the fact that the first two years of the retirement period are the worst 2 stock market years since the Great Depression, gives you confidence that the strategy is sound for just about any scenario.

Slow start but solid, specific advice

An interesting book in that it deals with very basic entry level investment advice (e.g defining what a mutual fund is) but also provides very specific guidance based on thorough research for asset sllocations in a post-retirement portfolio.

some good information. For many this points out mistakes that a lot of novices make and should avoid. It informs you of the need for growth so that your portfolio will last, but definitely not for an avid or advanced investor.

Good ideas

This book has some good ideas for retirement planning. It did seem to be thin on some details, so the list of further resources to explore was a welcome addition.

I started out in banking in the mid 80s in Oklahoma City. I had saved up $6000 from college and had a stock broker call me up. He had a stock that was "poised to move." Silly me, I thought he meant up. I told him to send me the financials to analyze, which he did. It looked pretty good. I invested half my life savings ($3000) in a stock called Kelly-Johnsons. In 6 months, I lost it all. He called ...more
