This book, though marketed as a novel, is heavily based on real historical events so it doesn’t feel right to rate it. From a reader’s perspective, it took me awhile to get into. Historical fiction is not my typical genre, especially when referring to a time period/event I know little to nothing about. From a human’s perspective, this book is absolutely heartbreaking and I still cannot fathom the fact that the Mountain Meadow Massacre is not more widely known and discussed in American history. As the author makes clear in her afterword, it is not a story that needs to be told to further an us versus them narrative. However, it is a story that needs to be told as it’s one of the deadliest mass slayings in U.S. history and it shows the long-term effects of a corrupt leadership. I absolutely cannot believe people thought it was okay to choose silence or blame rather than accountability at such a large, hurtful scale! While I truly hate such a horrendous event ever happened, I’m glad I learned about it through this book and applaud the author for sharing a long-silenced story!

Enjoyed the historical element of this novel. A lot I didn’t know. I live Noelle Ihli’s Books, but this one was a bit harder to get through- just content wise. I wasn’t as engaged. But overall another great read!

Got half way through and realised I had no idea what I had already read. Really disappointed in this as ALL of Noelle W Ihli books have been brilliant.
Also lent to a friend to try and she also passed on finished it as again she found it boring
The first quarter of the book is extremely long winded. I was struggling to remember characters and kept having to re read chapters and was still confused.
I did not finish this book and have no intention of trying. 😢

Incredible story, sad and unbelievable until you take a step back and look at the cruelty of war happening on the planet today. Fear of things they don’t understand cause men and women to become animals. Reminder to be kind.

This book made me emotional. It breaks my heart to know that it is actually a true story. Never heard of the mountain meadow massacre before. I’m happy I read this book.

Hard to read at times but such an interesting historical thriller about an interesting time period in US history
