Great for any artist, very educational from Picasso to De Chirico, and from German expressionism to Cubism, has a great variety of artists and works collected, i would recommend this art book to anyone getting into Twentieth century art (especially late century art) , other than that a very educational book for anyone really.

a great introduction to 20th century painting. i bought this little gem some 30 years ago and i would still put it at the toppermost of the poppermost on my list of books for people who are interested in learning about modern art.

from impressionism through expressionism, it leaps into cubism. then thrusts the reader headlong into dada and surrealism and emerges out into pop art, but not before taking you through the bauhaus, constructivism and a whole lot more. it's all here baby, just waiting to turn you on to a dazzling world of not only the imagination but of a reflection of ourselves.

this is part rwo of a set of...yup that's right, rwo. no not rwo. i meant to say two (sorry, it's these new dentures). the first one is a "comprehensive historical survey and reference work including biographies of 500 artists" but i'll be danged if i could find it here on goodreads.

oh well, at least we have part two. and a swell two too. get it? tutu. ballet. that's a joke son. i keep pitchin' 'em and you keep missin' 'em.

I found this to be an excellent intoduction to 20th century painting. It is a little dated, but with more pages of pictures than writing you can hardly go wrong. 1011 reproductions with 50 of the plates in color, it is a great resource. The text is also very relevant and insightful putting the artist in context of major art movements but also cultural contexts.
