This sexy emotional romance is the story of Olivia and Dave. Dave was there when Olivia's marriage finally fell apart after years of emotional abuse while at a summer camping trip with her husband's friend, and one year later they are back at the same camp with mutual friends but under new circumstances. Newly divorced, Olivia just wants to enjoy her vacation and figure out her future path. Dave, permanently injured in a tragic accident that forcibly ended his smokejumper career isn't the same carefree playboy he was when they met the year before. Both working on healing, they discover that being together is a way to forget all the pressure and stress and just be. But when their idyllic week is over and it's time to go their separate ways, will they be able to take the seeds of a new relationship and help it grow into something worth fighting for?

After being introduced to Dave and Olivia as characters in the previous story Clear As Day, I was really hoping to see them get a happy tale for themselves and it was with delight that I started this story. The author has a knack for pulling the reader in from the first page and while Olivia and Dave have been through some hard knocks in the run up to this week of summer fun, the simmering attraction between them is there, and ready to be acted upon. Dave is no longer the same man as a year ago though. While still friendly and charming when he wants to be, the bitterness and stress of his accident, recovery and realization that he will never be able to go back to the one thing in life he loves have taken their toll. He suffers from PTSD, he is physically challenged by his injuries and with women he no longer feels that he is a worthy player. Olivia on the other hand has grown into a more mature and self-sufficient woman, having gone through a divorce to her husband for whom she was only a trophy wife and realizing that she can now pursue her own goals, not those of her parents or her ex-husband. When she and Dave spend some time alone, they give into the attraction that's been beneath the surface and the love scenes between them are tender, sexy and emotional ( and plentiful for only being together a week!). Establishing this sexual connection means that when the week ends they have to decide what to do next. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that I really liked how the story continued, the struggle for both of them to decide about their futures and the way everything unfolded. It's not an easy trip to a happy ever after for them, but the work involved in making a relationship secure means that it's all the more worthwhile when it happens.

A key part of the story besides the romance between Dave and Olivia is the enduring friendships of the rest of the characters who gather every year for their summer vacation. I love seeing the whole group together again, the banter, the friendships and the obvious love and affection they have for each other. I hope there will be several more stories for this group of friends. Overall I found this to be a lovely story with a steamy yet tender romance. 5 stars.

LOVE BURNS takes a look at what happens when the life that you have planned-or was planned for you-falls apart. Dave is a macho smokejumper who enjoyed living on the edge, skirting danger all while reaping the benefits of being lusted after by admiring women. After a life changing incident Dave has to learn to cope with both physical and emotional challenges that leaves him reeling and unsure of how he will get back to being the man he wants to be.

Olivia has done what is expected of her all of her life. Allowing control over her life to first her parents even into adulthood and then turning that power over to her husband leads her to nothing but heartache, disappointment, and general displeasure with the way her life has turned out. Now that Olivia is set to find her own way she has to decide if finding herself can also mean loving a man who is strong willed but struggling as well.

Olivia and Dave have no problem with their attraction to one another. The physical attraction between the two burns fast and hot. What neither can comfortably deal with is the desire deep down to have someone that they can lean and depend on. They both question their ability to become the individuals that they once saw themselves becoming so they are hesitant to take on the expectations and needs of another person.

LOVE BURNS was a good honest look at how even two damaged people who are wavering can find their way together. Olivia and Dave eventually figure out that they are getting in their own way by not opening up to each other. Some of their obstacle are beyond their control but some of them are of their own making too which makes their problems realistic and relatable. LOVE BURNS has a steamy attraction that slowly builds into a trusting relationship that they had to fight for. Although this is book 3 in The River series I had no problem reading LOVE BURNS as a standalone story. LOVE BURNS is a well written enjoyable contemporary romance with enough steam and drama to keep the pages turning.

Dave Knight is a player, a bad boy. He’s a love-em-and-leave-em-no-commitment kind of guy. He wasn’t always that way, but a past relationship has made this his philosophy, which is why he runs away from anything that smells of commitment. And that’s how he copes. However, a problem with that philosophy arises and is put to the test when Dave finds himself saving Olivia from a potentially violent act at the hands of her husband. It is then followed by an intense, heated moment between Olivia and David. That latter incident leaves its mark on both of them. Dave, however, is also marked by his family background and a life changing incident with his job.

Olivia Benedetti-Harper is a good girl. Everything she has done is because of the control others have over her, that is, her parents and her husband. Her job is a result of pleasing her father. Her marriage is a result of pleasing her parents. Her marriage consists of playing the part of the good little wife. All of that changes when Dave intervenes on her behalf as her husband becomes violent. It’s then followed by an intense moment between her and Dave, which leaves a mark on both of them. Olivia is already marked by her controlled life, as well as a life changing event that comes her way.

Love Burns is a story of how these two people take events that have marked them and use them to begin making changes in their lives. Those changes will affect the relationship that begins between them. I love the way their relationship grows. I also love how they each find the strength to change the negatives that have marked them and turn them into positives. The support they gave each other as they worked through their own issues while helping the other with theirs was another element that made the story enjoyable. But if you are thinking that theirs was a smooth relationship, think again. There were plenty of ups and downs in the relationship, and the author does a great job of getting you to feel what they are feeling. From tears to smiles, you will feel it all as you read and get to know Olivia and David. The author has also been faithful to the genre of sexy, contemporary romance stories by including an abundance of intimate scenes that complement the story. As you read the story and see how all of these elements come together, you’ll find that Love Burns is quite an enjoyable read.

I was a little confused at the start of the book as Love Burns doesn’t start out quite like I am used to seeing books begin with a nice slow introduction of the main characters. It started during a friends weekend wedding in Las Vegas. We are introduced to the two main characters Dave and Olivia right in the beginning and they truly light up the pages of this book right from the start. There is an attraction there between them that is undeniable, but their timing couldn’t be worse. Olivia has just had to go through a life changing event and isn’t in the right place to be able to explore things with Dave. Dave can’t fight the attraction or the unbelievable need to protect Olivia but he won’t listen to the voice in his head that tells him this could be more. After an inevitable encounter in the hotel hallway Olivia is so lost she runs to the only place she knows, home to her parent’s.

The development of the Dave and Olivia throughout this story is amazing. Dave goes from a guy with a frat boy mentality who doesn’t want to grow up to being in love and willing to change everything to make sure that the woman she loves is happy. The details of the story are amazing and the connections with all of the characters is heartwarming. I truly felt like I was welcomed right into their family. Throughout all the ups and down’s their friends are always there to give them a swift knock upside the head to let them know they are crazy.

Dave and Olivia’s love story is one that will stay with me for awhile. This is the first book that I have read by Babette James and it has me clamoring for more. The way the author mixes together the romance, drama and family is amazing. I will be going back to read the first two books in the series. The reading order for the series is Summertime Dream, Clear as Day and Love Burns.

I didn't read any of the previous books in this series.
I did meet them here and got a little description of their past, not to much though. This book is about Dave and Olivia.
Dave was a smoke jumper. He jumped out of air planes to fight fires. Olivia just got out of a bad marriage. Their chemistry was there but they fought it.
They both were invited to go camping with the rest of the group. As in Kay, Nate, JoAnna and the kids.
Dave being grumpy because he suffered an injury on his last jump tried to ignore Olivia. Olivia who couldn't keep her eyes off of Dave the whole time was weary that he didn't want her or the same things she wanted.
Summer flings happen! That is Dave's #1 rule though DO NOT GET ROMANTIC! To bad his inner voice didn't listen. See they shared a kiss months before. That kiss would of gone on to better things if the elevator door didn't open up.
Being in close proximity of each other they spent most the day together. As their camping trip winds down Dave does the unthinkable. Yeah he lets her go. Gasp!!
Olivia sets her mind straight and goes to help out her Uncle Jack in Florida. She begins a new life.
As she gets her life on track Dave walks right back in. He has no idea what on earth he is doing. He has no job due to his injury. He traveled and the road took him to Olivia.
They manage to work well with one another but they can't seem to spit their feelings out. I mean come on you two. You like her, she likes you how hard is it? Finally they talk and things get going well enough for them. However there is a tragedy. OH NO!!! It brings them closer together. By the end of the book they are right where they need to be. WITH EACH OTHER.

I felt that this book went too slow for my taste. I know that it was nice to have a slow build up but at times it just seemed to drag a bit. Just my opinion of course. I did like both of the main characters, Dave and Olivia and they sure did come from different backgrounds. They each had their own different pain and insecurities.Dave had quite a nice group of friends that met as a tradition at their camp, where they relaxed and caught up. They ended up becoming friends with Olivia as well. A nice group of people. Dave and Olivia first meet in a pretty dramatic way and just kept slipping back and forth into each others life. It was cute how in the beginning Dave called Olivia "Florida", he would greet her like, "Hi, Florida". About that slow pace of the story? It was like you got to see into each of their lives slowly, then they would re-connect and there would be sex, sex, sex. Then because of all the baggage Dave (in particular) had, they would separate. I did like that Olivia went from trying to please everyone else to trying to build a life that pleased her. Her father thought he knew what was best for her, her just didn't seem to understand what he thought was so polar opposite of what she wanted. Her new mantra became, "Be brave, bold and honest".

I loved Olivia's Uncle Jake, while her father was a bit harder to like. Two brothers who loved Olivia but put it into practise in totally different ways. Royce Maguire turned out to be quite a good friend even with all the family problems he seemed to be having. He sounds like his life would also be a good story to read.

Slowly, steadily, warmly…

This is the third installment of the River series but don’t worry if you haven’t read the first two stories. The author provided enough back story that I was able to enjoy Dave and Olivia’s story as a standalone as well.

Olivia Benedetti-Harper was learning to live again. Recently separated, she needed to find her own way after years of living in a controlling relationship. She met Dave Knight on one of the worst days in her life but that unhappy incident introduced her to a circle of friends she would come to cherish. It was the wrong place, wrong time for the duo but there would be more meetings and more chances. Were they destined to be together or would there ever be the right time for them?

I loved the slow, steady buildup of Livie’s and Dave’s relationship. Insta-attraction didn’t meet insta-love for this likeable pair especially when Dave’s pain translated to him acting like a real jerk. They both had faced life-changing events and, once they got past the awkwardness and misunderstandings of their initial encounters, seemed to grow stronger together when they faced even more challenges. They couldn’t seem to catch a break as they both struggled to move forward against pressure from both family and friends. Well-written, this was a heart-warming read which has me eagerly looking for the first books in the series. I wonder where I can take fishing lessons?

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. This is the third book in the River book series. I have not read the first two books in the series. The author did a great job of providing enough background information that I did not have any problem getting into the book. The weekend of the wedding of Olivia's friends Nate and Kate she finds out her husband is having an affair. Dave is also friends with Nate and Kate. Olivia and her husband to get into an argument. Dave steps in to protect Olivia from her husband. The night of Nate and Kate's wedding Dave and Olivia have an intense sensual moment in the hotel hallway. Dave and Olivia are both going through difficult times in their lives when they meet again. The story is of a sensual and steamy romance. The author does a great job of making you feel the emotions of the characters. This story involves not just normal relationship stuff but divorce, PTSD, and family issues. I really enjoyed the book and the romance of Olivia and Dave. I look forward to reading other books by Babette James.

Dave and Olivia have both faced heartache and pain within their lives. Each has used running away as a coping mechanism. Dave through his smoke jumping career and Olivia by trying to block out years of emotional abuse. When Dave is injured ending his career he begins to realize he must face his painful past in order to gain a future with Olivia. Love Burns by Babette James is heartbreaking inspirational tale of two people trying to face pat mistakes and get over painful experiences. An emotional read that will leave you spellbound.
