I was lucky enough to receive a pre-release copy of STILL WATERS by F.E.Feeley Jr. and I have to say, it was great. This is the third installment of the Human Wraiths trilogy and every one of the three books was a gem. I love the way Mr. Feeley writes. His prose is crisp and clear, his construction of a story line deftly charted, and he's got the spooky stuff down pat. While the ghostly part of the story was nerve rattling for sure, I have to say I was equally impressed with the romantic parts of the book. The way Jeff and Bret came together wasn't sexed up just to be scintillating. Instead it felt like an honest progression of sensibilities leading to a gradual awakening of love. Does that make sense? I don't want to give anything away, but let me just say that the person who started this whole clusterf**k of terror in STILL WATERS was properly and justly disposed of in the end. When it happened, I was sitting on my sofa with a cat in my lap as I read. When I yelled "Yes!" the poor cat flew straight up into the air and took off for parts unknown, leaving most of her toenails in my crotch. Note to self. Never read a ghost story with an undeclawed cat in your lap. Pick up STILL WATERS if you love ghost stories and romance and rightly deserved revenge. Or if you just enjoy seeing a writer who is at the top of his game and knows how to put a good book together. And try the other two books in Mr. Feeley's trilogy if you haven't read them yet. THE HAUNTING OF TIMBER MANOR and OBJECTS IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. You won't be disappointed. And let me just add one more thing. Seriously now, isn't that one of the best book covers ever?

This is NOT scary and the writing is excellent. I also didn't read the first two books because I was told it wouldn't affect my enjoyment of this book.
Five years ago, Bret Williams and his fiancee Adam Woolsey were planning on spending the rest of the lives together when tragedy struck. Despite the pain, Brett continued to keep in touch with Adam's family, after they adopted him as one of their own.
When FBI agent Jeff McAlister comes to town to investigate some homicides, he is drawn to Brett even though Brett is a potential suspect. Even though the circumstances aren't ideal, there is an undeniable attraction. But in order to to move forward, Brett has to make peace with his past promises. Who is the murderer and what is their connection to Brett?
I couldn't stop reading this one once I started. The actual writing was fluid, smooth and clear. The story and characters were well developed and the folklore was interesting. I loved that Brett found comfort with Adam's family, I loved that they affirmed him and that last fight was heartbreaking. From the beginning, I had hoped that the perpetrators of violence would meet justice and their deeds exposed. The journey towards that end started out sad and painful but ending with hope and peace. I kept expecting to freak out from fear, but this book was more love and redemption that spooky ghost story (though it was a tad creepy). I

Another excellent ghost/romance story from Mr. Feeley. Very well written as usual. I'm just a huge fan and looking forward to reading the next book from this author. I love this series!

The rating is based on my enjoyment of this book. The review… I have to come at it from a few angles.
The writing? The writing was great. Every time I picked up the book, I could get right back into the scene with no problem. You can tell that the author could see exactly what he wanted to portray as he wrote this. Little details abound, making the story come to life.
The characters? The characters were good. They were… warm. I don’t know how else to explain that, but it was what made Adam’s character so tragic for me. You wanted to reach through the pages and pull him out of the cold. There’s not a whole lot of backstory, just enough to get a good grasp of the dynamics of everyone’s relationship. I loved the bad guys… real awful pieces of shit. I cheered every time they got what was coming to them. Very satisfying. The good guys were really nice folk. Small-town friendly-like. I thought I had a bead on them, but I was thrown for a loop when Margaret reacted the way she did to Bret suspecting you-know-who. It was a complete 180… but, let’s chalk that up to my own deficiencies when it comes to figuring out why people do things.
The horror plot? That was a shitload of fun. I’ve got a soft spot for the spooky-things-happen-because-natives thing (Pet Sematary is one of my fave books) and this was a good take on it. I only wish that dude was called anything but Chief. Overall, it felt like an old school horror flick. Loved the premise of the promise. The descriptions of the acts were great… especially the last one. I think I actually said “nice!” out loud when I read it.
The romance plot? It was pretty straightforward. I realized as I was reading this that this is the first romance book I’ve read that isn’t a bit kinky. While the romance feels like it’s half the book’s plot, it’s pretty angst free and… sweet. Too sweet? Nah. I actually liked it and was happy about what happened. The sex scenes, though brief and none-too-explicit, were well written.
Overall? A fun read. I enjoyed it, and I’m going to check out the other two (standalone) books in this series.

Si può senz'altro dire che siamo ad una marcata evoluzione del lavoro dell'autore che già ci aveva conquistati con indubbia capacità di intrattenimento mescolando la trama del libro a fatti terribili reali stimolando una riflessione sulle relazioni umane tramite la metafora e l'àncora del soprannaturale.

Yeah! Prima lettura del 2021 andata bene ❤️❤️ speriamo mi porti fortuna!
Uuuu me ne sono innamorata! Ammetto che in un primo momento ero un po' scettica, non perché non conoscessi l'autore e la sua bravura ma perché mi sapeva un po' di storia già sentita con il solito fantasma incazzato e desideroso di uccidere tutti e tutto ma poi la curiosità e la necessità di doverla recensire ha avuto la meglio e Wow! Amore puro. Ho amato ogni cosa. Rispetto alla storia precedente l'ho trovata più matura e ricca di dettagli. I personaggi sono caratterizzati meglio e la storia del fantasma/essere sovrannaturale rispetto agli scorsi libri è più coerente e ben inserita nella narrazione. Il fantasma è caratterizzato benissimo e si può assaporare tutta la sua angoscia, il suo dolore, il desiderio di vendetta e giustizia e infinito amore per quello che ha dovuto lasciare indietro, per l'amore mai dimenticato. Non è un mistero la sua identità ed è proprio questo che rende ancora più intricata la narrazione, riesci a capire fin da subito che è Adam. Ti viene praticamente buttato addosso e il mistero diventa non tanto scoprire chi è il fantasma killer, pazzo ma capire perchè è arrivato a quel punto nonostante fosse un giovane dolce e gentile che non avrebbe mai fatto del male una mosca in vita e chi sarà il prossimo a cadere nelle sue mani. Un cattivo non veramente cattivo intrigantissimo e che mi ha fatto commuovere in più occasioni. Ovviamente non è l'unico che ho amato. Anche Bret e Jeff fanno la loro bella figura. Bret (che per oscuri motivi ho sempre chiamato Brent XD) è un tesoro, la morte del compagbo lo ha spezzato, non può credere che si sia suicidato soprattutto dopo che gli ha promesso in modo super dolce e romantico di sposarlo... Non ha senso che si sia ucciso e questo lo uccide a sua volta. Sente che è stato ucciso eppure tiene tutto dentro. Non si concede una relazione e anche se desidera un contatto umano schiva qualsiasi opportunità per non mancare di rispetto a quell'amore che ancora sente. L'unico conforto per lui è la famiglia di Adam. I Woolsey lo hanno accolto come un figlio e per lui è un dono. Non ha mai avuto un rapporto con i suoi genitori, bigotti, omofobi e ossessionati con il prestigio sociale e quegli abbracci, quelle carezze sono oro. Si sente per la prima volta un figlio. Il rapporto con i Woolsey è speciale e nonostante abbia un po' storto il naso per un piccolo dettaglio nelle parti finali (che evito di spoilerare ma vi assicuro che quando arriverete a quel punto capirete e come me direte WTF?!) alla fine mi è piaciuto molto. L'esempio perfetto per cui una famiglia non deve essere per forza di sangue ma debba e possa essere scelta con il cuore e l'amore. Jeff anche è perfetto. È un agente dell'Fbi incaricato di occuparsi di indagare dei misteriosi delitti/suicidi che stanno avvenendo nella cittadina e fin da subito ci appare come un uomo più vecchio di Bret ma anche ricco di esperienza. Il suo lavoro sul campo lo ha reso sensibile e compassionevole al dolore altrui, lo ha reso paziente e desideroso di ottenere giustizia ed è perfetto per Bret. È un uomo supportivo che capisce il dolore del ragazzo, nonostante inizialmente si avvicini solo per indagare il caso di Adam e i possibili coinvolgimenti nei nuovi delitti ben presto si affeziona a lui, vuole proteggerlo, aiutarlo, salvarlo dal dolore che si porta dentro. I due sono dolcissimi e rispetto ai libri precedenti il loro rapporto è curato molto meglio perchè più spontaneo. È ben strutturato per non essere nè troppo rapido, nè troppo lento, insomma... Perfetto. Ho amato quindi i personaggi e i rapporti tra tutti loro.... Come non citare pure il rapporto tra Bret e Adam... È dolcissimo e straziante, dettato dalla loro giovane età e spensierato, i due si amavano e nonostante fossero forse un po' troppo ingenui da non capire il pericolo che si annidava nella crudele cittadina di bigotti era comunque... Puro... Sincero... È straziante sapere come è stato spezzato prematuramente... Immaginare infatti Bret e Adam adulti e felici.. Mi mette molta tristezza... Avrebbero meritato un lieto fine. Ho amato la loro storia e il modo in cui non sia solo un escamotage per raccontare una favoletta paranormale con un pizzico di horror ma qualcosa di più reale. Mi è piaciuta la crudeltà e il realismo. Una storia che ahimè potrebbe essere di cronaca vera. Quanti sono infatti i casi di omofobia e di violenza? Quante le vite spezzate dal branco perché viste come impure e immorali? Questa storia tragica rappresenta uno spaccato tristemente noto dei giorni nostri e anche un monito importante. Un bel messaggio contro la violenza e l'intolleranza. Una storia che insomma mi sento di consigliare caldamente perché ci dimostra che non serve per forza inserire sbudellamenti, sangue, creature inquietanti alla Stephen King per terrorizzare le persone. Sinceramente mi ha spaventato molto di più di tante altre storie super tenebrose e sanguinolente che ho letto perché questa usa una cosa semplice eppure così spaventosa: la crudeltà umana. Una crudeltà che la storia ci ha insegnato essere spesso senza senso, senza un motivo. La storia di Adam e della sua morte è spaventosissima perché senza senso, perché vittima della crudeltà, perché potrebbe succedere a ognuno di noi, perché ognuno di noi potrebbe cadere vittima di pazzi moralisti solo perché ha avuto l'occasione di vivere la propria felicità pubblicamente e non c'è nulla di più horror degli esseri umani e dei loro atti scellerati. Un libro bellissimo e che vi terrà incollati fino alla fine. Un finale di serie straordinario e coinvolgente. Un inizio di anno con il botto ❤️

A promise is a promise. Bret Williams and Adam Woolsey love each other. They have a plan, and they look to the future together. But someone has other plans. Two seemingly different plotlines begin the story; one about a vengeful ghost and the other about a young man healing from a tragic loss in the bosom of a welcoming family.
FBI agent Jeff McAllister comes to Promise, Michigan, to look into a bizarre drowning, and gradually gets drawn into the culture of the town. As he gets to know the handsome, grieving Bret Williams, Agent McAllister becomes increasingly aware of the disturbing truth behind the picture-perfect facades of an idyllic lakeside community.
At the center of it all is Promise Island, sitting quietly in the middle of the lake, a place accursed or blessed, or possibly both. “Still Waters” is a ghost story, a love story, a tragedy, a murder mystery and a romance. It is about good families, bad families, good cops, bad cops, gay cops and good dogs. Feeley’s prose gets a little overwrought now and then, but his heart is so big and so full, it just drags you into the words.
He’s not quite at the fever pitch of TJ Klune’s “Into this River I Drown,” but he’s in that same ballpark. F.E. Feeley is a romantic soul; and that soul opens itself up to his readers in this third volume of the Memoirs of the Human Wraiths series. If you’re not a romantic, these books probably won’t grab you. But if you are…hold on to your hat. It’s been a while since his last book, and it’ll probably be a while until his next one. No problem; he’s a writer worth waiting for.

This book was amazing. I am a M/M Romance addict and I often read the debate about M/M Romance versus Gay Fiction and now I understand. This is Gay Fiction. M/M Romance are crack, especially to a Fujioshi like myself. But this... this is a work of art. A compelling, eerie story about tragedy, despair and ultimately, love. The romance takes a backseat to a gripping story that leaves you at the edge of your seat. I have now found a new favorite author.

Well written and edited. Really nice prose, decent world building, characters with depth. Great secondary characters. A good ghost story for those who like the subgenre.

FE Feeley has written another beautiful and genuinely creepy book. I was drawn in even within the first several pages. From the beginning we are introduced to Bret and Adam. Their love for each other is obvious and just makes the tragedy of what happens to Adam all the more heartbreaking. There was a satisfying amount of justice meted out throughout the book, but not without consequence. I kept going back to Death Cab For Cutie's song, "Black Sun" throughout, thinking the lyric "how could something so fair be so cruel". Even the innocent can suffer when that justice is realized. Seeing things throughout the story through the wraith's eyes just adds to the sense of loss and heartbreak. The relationship between Bret and FBI agent Jeff was appropriately slow and gentle in development. I could feel the tension developing and the care they had for each other throughout the story. As a horror fanatic I love that you get the John Saul or Dean Koontzish world where still waters in a community can hold untold, unjust horrors just begging for retribution, while at the same time getting a tender and even sexy romance. Highly recommended!

Prosegue la serie “Memorie delle ombre umane” e ogni libro diviene sempre più intenso del precedente, manifestando chiaramente la brillante evoluzione del suo autore che, mi auguro, continui a coltivare la sua musa.
Questa volta ci troviamo nella classica cittadina di provincia, in apparenza simbolo della perfezione, in realtà piena di segreti.
Tutto inizia 5 anni prima con l’improvvisa morte del campione di nuoto locale trovato, guarda caso, affogato nelle acque del lago. La sua morte lascia distrutta la sua famiglia e il suo compagno, legato a lui da una promessa: avrebbero dovuto sposarsi 5 anni dopo.
Brett dopo la morte di Adam, trascorre la propria vita trascinandola, ancora prigioniero di quell’amore che lo rende incapace di interagire con il mondo, chiuso in un dolore che non lo abbandona. Come ogni anno all’anniversario della morte di Adam raggiunge la famiglia del compagno, che è anche la sua, visto che il suo essere gay lo ha allontanato definitivamente dalla sua famiglia d’origine, soprattutto da sua madre che lo vede come un abominio.
Sono quindi trascorsi 5 anni da quello che per tutti è stato un suicidio e nella cittadina si verifica una morte assurda, quasi irreale a cui ne seguiranno altre. Chi ha letto i libri precedenti sa che i fantasmi sono i veri protagonisti delle storie, nel bene e nel male. Questa volta posso ben dire di tifare spudoratamente per il fantasma di Adam, tornato per consumare la sua vendetta.
Questa serie di morti è seguita dall’FBI, da due agenti molto sensibili e ricettivi, capaci di cogliere gli aspetti più nascosti della storia. Mentre l’indagine lascia le vie tradizionali e viene a capo dei misteri legati alla morte di Adam, il giovane Brett e l’agente Jeff scoprono un legame, un sentimento che li unisce.
Per la prima volta dopo la morte di Adam, Brett pare tornare a vivere, ma solo per poco, schiacciato anche lui dalla forza di quella promessa, quel giuramento d’amore che lui e Adam si erano scambiati.

Tra leggende indiane, storie dimenticate e morti orribili si districa tutta la vicenda che come sempre ha un ritmo adrenalinico, lasciando ben poco scampo al povero lettore, coinvolto quanto i protagonisti nella storia, incapace di fare altro se non leggere e arrivare alla fine.
Come sempre i particolari sono curati e i personaggi corposi, tanto che riescono a non venire schiacciati dalla storia stessa, riuscendo a tenere sempre a galla i loro pensieri e sentimenti.
Il romanzo è un MM ma, come scrive lo stesso autore, non è fondamentale questo aspetto, qui si parla di razzismo, di non accettazione, di preservare le apparenze preferendole alla verità. Qui si parla anche di come un amore, che dovrebbe essere sopra ogni cosa, si trasforma in odio.
Una nuova storia da leggere e se sentite dei brividi beh, non siamo soli…

Acque tranquille è l'ultimo capitolo della serie horror Memorie delle ombre umane, una serie che attraverso vicende inquietanti ha raccontato storie di passato doloroso, vendette e rimpianti, ma anche di amore, speranza e vita.
Per lo stile fluido e semplice queste sono storie che si leggono praticamente da sole, scorrono sotto i nostri occhi, catturano l'attenzione, danno quel giusto pizzico d'inquietudine senza essere mai eccessive. La parte romance stempera le atmosfere da brividi e trasmette dei messaggi che fanno riflettere e emozionare. Acque tranquille non è da meno e, nonostante la rapida e semplice intuizione del mistero che avvolge la vicenda e nonostante abbia trovato la parte paranormale e le reazioni dei protagonisti a essa a tratti semplicistica, mi sono goduta pienamente una storia delicata e molto sofferta. Una storia nella storia dove ho empatizzato con i sentimenti di perdita e rimpianto, di dolore e vendetta. La vendetta è ciò che scatena gli eventi di morte a Promise, ridente cittadina da cartolina sulle rive del lago, dove la ricchezza e lo status sociale sono tutto. Una promessa è stata infranta, una maledizione si è abbattuta su chi ha distrutto il sogno di una vita. La vendetta sarà terribile, la promessa deve essere mantenuta, a costo di ogni sacrificio. Cinque anni sono passati da quando Brent ha fatto la promessa al suo primo amore, cinque anni da quando Adam non c'è più. Bret cerca di andare avanti e di costruirsi una vita ma il legame con il passato lo tiene bloccato in una sorta di limbo. L'unico sentimento che prova è verso la famiglia del suo amore perduto, a cui è legato dalla sofferenza per la perdita di un figlio, un fratello, un amante e un amico.
Tra sogni e eventi inspiegabili scopriamo la profondità di un sentimento che neanche la morte è riuscito a cancellare, ripercorriamo la bellezza del primo amore fino a commuoverci. Jeff è un agente dell'FBI dedito al lavoro, solo e disilluso, durante il caso per gli omicidi a Promise si ritrova ad affrontare forze inspiegabili e un'attrazione irresistibile per Bret. La parte romance non è propriamente un insta-love, ma è più un'apertura al futuro, al cambiamento per entrambi, nonostante la sua velocità. E' molto tenera e delicata e dona una sensazione di speranza per il futuro in contrapposizione al dolore del passato. La storia mi è piaciuta molto nonostante alcune perplessità sopra citate, ma ciò che ha alzato la valutazione del romanzo e mi ha colpito profondamente è un altro protagonista: l'ombra che con la sua presenza costante, le sue azioni e possessioni ha enfatizzato il significato e il messaggio del romanzo. Il mio pensiero e cuore vanno ad Adam. Consiglio questo libro e tutta la serie a chi ha voglia di storie belle e dolci con quella leggera sfumatura horror che regala brivid

4.5 stars- A hauntingly beautiful testament to undying love
I cannot really pinpoint what it is that sets this author’s writing apart, but every time I pick up a book by him, I have the hardest time putting it down. The way the characters’ experiences and feelings are described make you feel as though you are standing alongside them. Likewise, the scenery and imagery never fail to transport me. Perhaps it’s the author’s poetry background, but Mr. Feeley can convey so much in so few words, that I can’t help but feel involved in the story. Still Waters was a testament to that. I thoroughly enjoyed both the e-book and audiobook of the first story in this series. However, I hadn’t gotten around to continuing the Memoirs of the Human Wraiths series just yet. Luckily, these are all standalones, so I was able to jump ahead and listen to the audiobook for Still Waters soon after its release. I was quickly drawn into the story and captivated by the characters and unique plot. Still Waters proved to be more of a mystery with a paranormal twist than some of this author’s other works which have made me jump. So if you’re holding back because you don’t want to be spooked, there’s no need. That said, the story was wonderfully different and hauntingly beautiful at times.
The narrator for Still Waters was new to me and overall, I liked his delivery. He had a good voice for the characters and story and his rhythm fit the book’s pacing well. I did think his performance of the big suspenseful moments wasn’t as crisp or exciting as the scene playing out, but I certainly won’t hesitate picking up books he narrates in the future. Mr. Feeley has a propensity for matching the voice in his books with a narrator that can deliver that tone and I think this narrator’s quiet strength in his delivery fit Jeff and Bret perfectly.
I loved the characters of Still Waters and how they were woven together. The pacing is measured but up tempo and the flow between the narrative and dialogue very smooth. Though Still Waters is definitely a romance, the relationship is really the only aspect I thought wasn’t spot on. The author routinely writes quieter romances- they aren’t the star and there isn’t a big tada moment, but rather a palpable bond and love between the main characters I appreciate. That was true in Still Waters, but something was missing. I liked Bret and Jeff together and thought they were sweetly supportive of one another. However, the progression of the relationship felt odd- not so much rushed as underdeveloped or as though the warming up period was skipped. I wish I had seen the feelings build a bit between the men so the romance was as memorable as the story itself. That said, Still Waters is a fantastic book I’d recommend to any reader who enjoys suspense and mystery with paranormal and angsty elements.

Nemmeno la terribile morte di Adam infrange il voto, anzi, mette in movimento qualcosa che nessuno può fermare: qualcosa di terribile e inquietante che è deciso a chiedere vendetta per un’ ingiustizia che ha segnato la vita di molti.
Bret, cinque anni dopo la morte del suo amato, torna a Promise, tra le braccia della famiglia di Adam, l’unica che l’abbia mai accettato veramente. Il suo cuore ancora chiama quello del suo defunto fidanzato, nonostante in quel periodo abbia avuto rapporti con altri uomini, per lui era solo la ricerca di un contatto, ma nel cuore la presenza di Adam è inscalfibile.

This was a good spooky read. I have read the other books in this series but these can be read as a stand alone books. I loved the supernatural scenes in this book. They’re intense and vivid. Just the kind of thing to make you question that noise you heard. I found myself wanting justice just as strongly as the spirits although that vengeance has consequences to good guys. I enjoyed the struggle this caused me to feel throughout the book. I do enjoy conflict! I have to mention how amazing the cover is. It’s so striking and once you read the story it has that much more of an impact.
The book revolves around the horrible death of a young gay teenager in a town that features the haves and have nots. It’s all about where you live or who you know. How much money and where you are on the social ladder. Where town politics rule and the ones in charge aren’t exactly good people although they like to pretend they are. The town, Promise, has a legend or a curse brought about from old native stories. If you visit this little island and make a promise you’re bound to keep it. Years before Adam took his lover Bret there to ask him to marry him. When Adam was found floating in the lake the promise was broken. Now someone has to pay.
I’m not a huge fan of love triangles and maybe this isn’t exactly one because if I wanted an HEA there was only one real option. I do think personally I had a harder time connecting with Jeff and Bret as a potential couple because I was so firmly consumed by Bret and Adam’s relationship. Bret and Adam had this beautiful strong meant to be love built on friendship. The first couple of chapters had me tearing up as we learned what happened and about how they fell in love. I found this particularly impressive. To bring so much emotion to me as the reader so quickly had me fully invested very early in the book. Adam is dead and Bret is still mourning five years later. He just can’t move beyond what he lost with Adam. Until he meets Jeff. Jeff is an FBI agent sent to town to investigate the strange murder of the town sheriff and keep the media from learning the very strange circumstances of the death. This brings him into contact with Bret and for Jeff sparks fly. He learns Adam and Bret’s story and makes a connection with Bret. Both men initially struggle with the developing attraction between them. For me, Jeff’s feelings developed very quickly. I get his need to protect Bret because he certainly needed it but it felt fast and hard. I just didn’t ever completely jump from Bret and Adam to Bret and Jeff. I was sort of in limbo right along with the guys.
What I did love was the paranormal thriller aspect of this story. It was creepy and awesome. There was corruption and injustice. I was screaming for vengeance so I probably enjoyed the murder scenes more than I should have. There’s just something about a seemingly perfect little lake side town that has this evil dirty little secret that appeals to me. There were some very likable and entertaining secondary characters. At times they frustrated me but made it all seem more real I suppose. I’d absolfutely recommend this book is you like paranormal thrillers. Good characters. Lots of suspense. Intense and spooky. The bad guys lose. Good book!

I get his need to protect Bret because he certainly needed it but it felt fast and hard. I just didn’t ever completely jump from Bret and Adam to Bret and Jeff. I was sort of in limbo right along with the guys.
What I did love was the paranormal thriller aspect of this story. It was creepy and awesome. There was corruption and injustice. I was screaming for vengeance so I probably enjoyed the murder scenes more than I should have. There’s just something about a seemingly perfect little lake side town that has this evil dirty little secret that appeals to me. There were some very likable and entertaining secondary characters. At times they frustrated me but made it all seem more real I suppose. I’d absolfutely recommend this book is you like paranormal thrillers. Good characters. Lots of suspense. Intense and spooky. The bad guys lose. Good book!

Anyone out there who reads my reviews know that I LOVE books that make me "feel". F.E. Feeley has the wonderful talent to write books that always make me feel :)
This is the story of the aftermath and consequences of the death of state-champion swimmer Adam and what happens to those left behind, not the least is his boyfriend/fiance Bret.
The writing is great and keeps you pulled into the story and turning pages. I didn't finish until 3am, but couldn't put it down.
The "paranormal/suspense" aspect of the book is fascinating and really leaves you with something to think about (enough said, I'm not going to spoil it).
The m/m romance aspect of the book is warm, tender, funny and parts of it made me cry like a baby (still not sure whether I want to smack Freddy or hug the crap out of him).
The good guys are good and the bad guys are bad. I cheered every time one of the bad guys got what was coming to him!
The secondary characters, especially Adam's family, are warm, wonderful, funny and best of all, not perfect.
If you've read the previous two books, you have an idea of what to expect.
If you haven't read anything by F.E. Feeley yet, don't worry that this is book #3, they are really all stand-alone books, just linked by subject matter.
Grab this one if you like paranormal/suspense and you too will be a F.E. Feeley fan :)

With each novel of his I've read, author F.E. Feeley Jr.'s prose style becomes noticeably more polished. When I read the prologue of "Still Waters" I felt I was reading something beautiful and artistic. I didn't lose that feeling as I read on. This is the best novel F.E. Feeley Jr. has published to date.
There were two elements of the novel I particularly liked. The first and most obvious is that the author managed to capture the feel of classic horror novels and films from the 70s and 80s -- Stephen King, Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Stuart Gordon. This was a frightening novel, with great visuals that put me in the middle of a horror movie
The second element was the romance, which is, I think, much stronger in this novel than in his previous novel (though I liked that one, too). There are, in fact, two romances being expertly balanced in this novel. I was completely caught up in it.

Uuuu me ne sono innamorata! Ammetto che in un primo momento ero un po' scettica, non perché non conoscessi l'autore e la sua bravura ma perché mi sapeva un po' di storia già sentita con il solito fantasma incazzato e desideroso di uccidere tutti e tutto ma poi la curiosità e la necessità di doverla recensire ha avuto la meglio e Wow! Amore puro. Ho amato ogni cosa. Rispetto alla storia precedente l'ho trovata più matura e ricca di dettagli. I personaggi sono caratterizzati meglio e la storia del fantasma/essere sovrannaturale rispetto agli scorsi libri è più coerente e ben inserita nella narrazione. Il fantasma è caratterizzato benissimo e si può assaporare tutta la sua angoscia, il suo dolore, il desiderio di vendetta e giustizia e infinito amore per quello che ha dovuto lasciare indietro, per l'amore mai dimenticato. Non è un mistero la sua identità ed è proprio questo che rende ancora più intricata la narrazione, riesci a capire fin da subito che è Adam. Ti viene praticamente buttato addosso e il mistero diventa non tanto scoprire chi è il fantasma killer, pazzo ma capire perchè è arrivato a quel punto nonostante fosse un giovane dolce e gentile che non avrebbe mai fatto del male una mosca in vita e chi sarà il prossimo a cadere nelle sue mani. Un cattivo non veramente cattivo intrigantissimo e che mi ha fatto commuovere in più occasioni. Ovviamente non è l'unico che ho amato. Anche Bret e Jeff fanno la loro bella figura. Bret (che per oscuri motivi ho sempre chiamato Brent XD) è un tesoro, la morte del compagbo lo ha spezzato, non può credere che si sia suicidato soprattutto dopo che gli ha promesso in modo super dolce e romantico di sposarlo... Non ha senso che si sia ucciso e questo lo uccide a sua volta. Sente che è stato ucciso eppure tiene tutto dentro. Non si concede una relazione e anche se desidera un contatto umano schiva qualsiasi opportunità per non mancare di rispetto a quell'amore che ancora sente. L'unico conforto per lui è la famiglia di Adam. I Woolsey lo hanno accolto come un figlio e per lui è un dono. Non ha mai avuto un rapporto con i suoi genitori, bigotti, omofobi e ossessionati con il prestigio sociale e quegli abbracci, quelle carezze sono oro. Si sente per la prima volta un figlio. Il rapporto con i Woolsey è speciale e nonostante abbia un po' storto il naso per un piccolo dettaglio nelle parti finali (che evito di spoilerare ma vi assicuro che quando arriverete a quel punto capirete e come me direte WTF?!) alla fine mi è piaciuto molto. L'esempio perfetto per cui una famiglia non deve essere per forza di sangue ma debba e possa essere scelta con il cuore e l'amore. Jeff anche è perfetto. È un agente dell'Fbi incaricato di occuparsi di indagare dei misteriosi delitti/suicidi che stanno avvenendo nella cittadina e fin da subito ci appare come un uomo più vecchio di Bret ma anche ricco di esperienza. Il suo lavoro sul campo lo ha reso sensibile e compassionevole al dolore altrui, lo ha reso paziente e desideroso di ottenere giustizia ed è perfetto per Bret. È un uomo supportivo che capisce il dolore del ragazzo, nonostante inizialmente si avvicini solo per indagare il caso di Adam e i possibili coinvolgimenti nei nuovi delitti ben presto si affeziona a lui, vuole proteggerlo, aiutarlo, salvarlo dal dolore che si porta dentro. I due sono dolcissimi e rispetto ai libri precedenti il loro rapporto è curato molto meglio perchè più spontaneo. È ben strutturato per non essere nè troppo rapido, nè troppo lento, insomma... Perfetto. Ho amato quindi i personaggi e i rapporti tra tutti loro.... Come non citare pure il rapporto tra Bret e Adam... È dolcissimo e straziante, dettato dalla loro giovane età e spensierato, i due si amavano e nonostante fossero forse un po' troppo ingenui da non capire il pericolo che si annidava nella crudele cittadina di bigotti era comunque... Puro... Sincero... È straziante sapere come è stato spezzato prematuramente... Immaginare infatti Bret e Adam adulti e felici.. Mi mette molta tristezza... Avrebbero meritato un lieto fine. Ho amato la loro storia e il modo in cui non sia solo un escamotage per raccontare una favoletta paranormale con un pizzico di horror ma qualcosa di più reale. Mi è piaciuta la crudeltà e il realismo. Una storia che ahimè potrebbe essere di cronaca vera. Quanti sono infatti i casi di omofobia e di violenza? Quante le vite spezzate dal branco perché viste come impure e immorali? Questa storia tragica rappresenta uno spaccato tristemente noto dei giorni nostri e anche un monito importante. Un bel messaggio contro la violenza e l'intolleranza. Una storia che insomma mi sento di consigliare caldamente perché ci dimostra che non serve per forza inserire sbudellamenti, sangue, creature inquietanti alla Stephen King per terrorizzare le persone. Sinceramente mi ha spaventato molto di più di tante altre storie super tenebrose e sanguinolente che ho letto perché questa usa una cosa semplice eppure così spaventosa: la crudeltà umana. Una crudeltà che la storia ci ha insegnato essere spesso senza senso, senza un motivo. La storia di Adam e della sua morte è spaventosissima perché senza senso, perché vittima della crudeltà, perché potrebbe succedere a ognuno di noi, perché ognuno di noi potrebbe cadere vittima di pazzi moralisti solo perché ha avuto l'occasione di vivere la propria felicità pubblicamente e non c'è nulla di più horror degli esseri umani e dei loro atti scellerati. Un libro bellissimo e che vi terrà incollati fino alla fine. Un finale di serie straordinario e coinvolgente. Un inizio di anno con il botto ❤️

✔ Letto! Il primo libro di parlava di un'ombra umana cattiva e egoista. Disposta a uccidere tutta la sua famiglia per gelosia. Il secondo libro di parla di ombre così sommerse dal dolore e del pentimento da farsi immergere in un loop continuo dei peggiori momenti della loro vita.
Ma questo libro invece, parla di un ombra che mi ha fatto soffrire di più. Un ingiustizzato, qualcuno a cui la fine è arrivato troppo presto. Una essere umano bellissimo.
Ci sono un gruppo di persone che si mettono una maschera di perbenismo in faccia, ma che in realtà sono dei mostri con l'anima marcia. Capace di uccidere un ragazzo con un futuro brillante davanti a sé, innamorato e corrisposto e con una famiglia amorevole. Un fortunato in questo brutto mondo.
Adam e Bret si amavano, era due giovani ragazzi con un futuro insieme interrotto per sempre. Si sono giurati amore eterno su un'isola in cui le promesse erano sacre. Per colpa dei mostri, la promessa non era stata mantenuta e loro dovevano pagare.
Ero d'accordissimo con Adam e la sua vendetta. Per ogni colpo inferto, non vorrei mentirvi, non mi è dispiaciuto neanche un po'. Li avrei fatto soffrire anche di più. Sarei l'ombra cattivissima me.
La persona che aiuterà Bret dopo 5 anni dalla morte di Adam a non morire sarà la persona che anche Adam avrebbe scelta come possibile sostituto di sé. Un uomo coraggioso, solitario e che farà di tutto per prottegere Bret ed è proprio quello che Adam desidera per lui.
No so dirvi quale libro dei 3 mi sia piaciuto di più, ma forse perché sia l'ultimo, perché la memoria dei fatti sia più fresca, non so dirvi. Ma mi ha toccato il cuore. La vita per la maggior parte delle volte è ingiusta, ma ogni tanto la bilancia equalizza i fati.
Già dalla dedica, ringraziamenti e nota si capisce il quanto F.E. Feeley Jr. Sia una persona sensibile e speciale. Un bellissimo esemplare di essere umano e che nei suoi personaggi, come Jonanthan, mi piacerebbe pensare che ci sia tanto di lui. Libri bellissimi, traduzioni impeccabili e questa copertina di questo libro è un capolavoro.
Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ e spero vivamente che potete leggerlo e sconfiggere la paura delle ombre.

"Acque tranquille" è l'ultimo libro della serie Memorie delle ombre umane, scritta da F. E. Feeley. Lo scrittore ha scelto di scrivere tre storie autoconclusive, indipendenti tra loro, con il filo conduttore dell'amore m/m e una buona dose di horror paranormale.
Questa volta i protagonisti sono Bret e Jeff. Due uomini diversissimi tra loro, che incrociano le loro strade a Promise, un'isola misteriosa al centro di antiche leggende, bagnata da un lago dalle acque gelide.
Il giovane Bret torna ogni anno a Promise, dopo aver perso tragicamente l'amore della sua vita, Adam.
L'agente dell'FBI, Jeff Mcallister, invece, deve recarsi a Promise per un'indagine molto complicata e particolare. I due incroceranno i loro destini, uniti nella risoluzione del caso più difficile della loro esistenza.
Anche questa volta, l'autore scrive una storia accattivante e fa perdere il lettore nell'identificazione dei buoni e dei cattivi.
La vendetta, le promesse, l'amore, ma anche l'affetto famigliare e l'amicizia, sono segni distintivi di questo libro.
Ho adorato la famiglia di Adam, tutti i suoi membri, uniti e forti nel dolore della perdita, ma anche terribilmente umani, racchiusi soprattutto nella figura di Margareth, madre nel significato più vero della parola.
E poi, un'altra donna, Reggie, amica e partner di Jeff nell'FBI.
Entrambe donne forti, ma anche buone e gentili.
Le scene di violenza e terrore descritte nel libro, vengono sempre accompagnate da momenti di tenerezza, amore e speranza, equilibrando l'animo della storia.
Per leggere le storie create da Feeley, bisogna buttare via la razionalità e calarsi in mondi paranormali. Solo così si potrà vivere appieno all'interno della lettura.
Il mio voto sono 4 coccole e mezzo!

What a great story. As a lover of mystery and paranormal stories, this book appealed to me from the start. The smooth prose, the relentless rhythm of the narration, the undeniable chemistry of the characters… it all combines to create an intriguing story, one that is really difficult to put down once you’ve started it. Marek Montoya’s narration provides the right amount of creepy, and his masterful use of pitch and intonation provides a further dimension to an already compelling story. I’ve enjoyed it to the full

What an amazing story... it twisted and turned and laid me open raw. Feeley definitely has a way with words, whether he's painting a bucolic town rotting from the inside or the grief of a teenager aged into an adult before his time. When the wind blows in this story, you feel it on your skin. You smell the lake, the storms and you can hear the thunder when it rolls across the sky.
The main characters, Jeff and Bret are easy to relate to and feel a rapport with. Like had they been real, I would have been friends with both. At times, I just wanted to hug Bret, to keep him safe from the acidic hate in his life. Jeff's anger and despair became mine. When they laughed, I did and when they hurt, my soul broke for them.
The supporting cast of characters pop off the page into full technicolor avatars in my head. Even the dog!
The story itself is tightly woven even if the advancement of it is a little choppy. That's technique, which can be honed and smoothed out. Feeley has the one thing that can't be taught and that is talent. I look forward to whatever stories are in his head and to the ones already out there!

F.E. Feeley Jr. does another amazing job writing a story that will grab hold of you and not let go! This story was beautifully written and well told. The mystery here kept me in suspense almost to the end and I can't count how many times I got chills down my spine while listening to this.The past love story here is so very heartbreaking and will honestly rip you to shreds all while you are being sewn back together with the present day happenings. This author does what not many can do in that I felt like I could feel everything these characters were going through and it was like I could visually see all that was being described around me. I'm looking forward to more from this author and the narrator.
The narration was very well done and really brought this story to life. I will be looking for more books narrated by Marek Montoya.

Usually when books involve a vengeful spirit, it's evil, malevolent and the antagonist, but as soon as I realized what was going on, I was rooting for the wraith to get his revenge for the injustice that had occurred. This book was really well written with a plot that seems incredibly realistic even with the wraith... the evil of man is much more twisted than the supernatural! I'm also happy it did not end they way it was starting to look.

A paranormal mystery that grips you and takes you on a haunting journey. Suspicious deaths, a broken promise, a vengeful wraith, and mysteries solved. Brilliant story telling and well developed characters help capture the reader's attention and keep you captivated. A definite recommendation worthy book.
