Diego Rivera the Red
Cultural Writing. Biography. Art History. Latino/Latina Studies. Translated from the Spanish by Dick Gerdes. In this English translation of the colorful recreation of the childhood and early adulthood of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, his daughter Guadalupe Rivera Marin explores the ideological and artistic development of a revolutionary painter. Rivera Marin begins with a pivotal trip that Diego took with his father at the age of six and continues through his travels in Europe, prior to his return to Mexico, where he would later marry Frida Kahlo and found the muralist movement. Originally published in Mexico but never before available in English, DIEGO RIVERA THE RED also features portraits of significant historical, political, and artistic figures.

I was SO disappointed by this book--it had all of the possibilties of being wonderful but I quit reading after 100 pages--I'm not sure if it was poor writing or poor translation or lack of editing that is the problem...at any rate the content was there but the way it was presented was terribly uneven...ranging from strictly almost Victorian style English to very modern, slangy conversation..."Hey, what's happening bro" between 9 year old Diego and his friends.
