An Unexpected Encounter

A young apprentice wizard discovers a huge secret behind a hidden door. The story seems intended for 10 to 15-year-old fans of Harry Potter. The adult reader will probably find the writing a tad too simplistic, and there were several inconsistencies and unexplained holes in the story. Still, the plot shows potential and the story could be significantly improved by a little editing and rewriting.

This is an interesting fantasy short story with a likeable main character who is an apprentice wizard and a very cool dragon. I hope the author plans to write more about this character and situation, because I want to know the history of the dragon (and if there will be more about her) and if the apprentice wizard completes his training.

Synopsis:

Teslanar, a recently graduated college student at a magical college, has received a apprenticeship helping the head of sorcerers at the college he graduated from. While he was looking out of the window admiring the flowers, he goes outside to see that the gardener has gone missing. An explosion from no other than a powerful dragon. Teslanar must take care of this dragon, but he doesn't have to knowledge to do so. What could possibly go wrong?

Review:

Let me just say that I don't read many short stories whether that be stand alone or a collection of short stories. This story has made me want to read more short stories.

I was constantly at the edge of my seat. Would Teslanar be able to take on the dragon himself?

The ending was great too. I definitely wasn't expecting that. Oh my gosh.

I love how descriptive and gripping this story was. Tyler did a great job of describing Teslanar's high fantasy world as if we were experiencing it ourselves. I wish I could write that to be completely honest.

There wasn't a lot of dialogue which I was a little disappointed. I didn't think that Teslanar would fight the dragon with little dialogue. Shouldn't he try to lure the dragon away with something? I'm not sure, but I felt like it was sort of missing dialogue.

I was very happy with how well plotted out the story was and how well structured it was. Tyler got his message across.

Overall I thought the story was great and fans of sci-fi and magical elements will definitely enjoy this short story.

Apprentice Mistake by Owen Tyler

Apprentice Mistake is a short fantasy story which is action packed and very well written!

“Teslanar noted the location of the secret passage as he tried to figure out what the old man was doing. Was the gardener afraid of getting caught doing something wrong?”.

Meet our main character; Teslanar. An apprentice wizard who has recently graduated from a magical college.

“A massive explosion shook the ground”.

This is a creative sci-fi short book, which I would have loved to have been longer as I felt even more could have been packed in. I tend to feel like this about most short stories so this is not the fault of the author.

“Where was he? Would he be able to get out of here alive?”.

Brilliant ending, which leaves the reader wanting more. A quick, fun, enthralling read suitable for most ages! After all, who doesn't love magic and a dragon statue that comes to life?

“Whatever he had thought about surviving this encounter, it was clear he was wrong”.

Overall, Apprentice Mistake is well written, fully packed for a short story and I really liked the main character too!

Entertaining short story

Teslanar is a sorcerers apprentice who on his free afternoon discovers a hidden cavern where, as his curiosity leads him to enter, he accidentally awakens a dragon. Now he has to put it back into its stone form, as he found it... Having little magic left, will he manage to do so?
It's an entertaining short story, although too short for my taste, I'd really like to know how it goes on. The end invites the reader's imagination about how the story might go on and what secrets might be revealed about the situation Teslanar just experienced and what happened to his own magic. The environment and events are lively described and the writing style is easy to follow.

Quick, entertaining read

I received this short story in exchange for a review. I read it over a cup of coffee this morning, and it was a fun way to start the day! The story is told from the perspective of Teslanar, a student studying magic who stumbles into a perilous situation and has to use quick thinking and magical skills to survive. Being the magic lover I am, I was naturally drawn to the story. It wrapped up a little too quickly for me, but all in all it was a fun read. Those looking to add a little magic to their day without committing to a novel-length story will enjoy this.

Owen Tyler knows how to keep a young reader enthralled (and an older one too)! In just a few pages, a young wizard in training gets himself into a literally hot spot and uses his ingenuity to get himself out again. Teslanar’s adventures should definitely be added to the library of the 11 year old age group and up.

I found this to be a delightful story, well written and gripping. The young Wizard has a fine adventure, a dragon is discovered and we are entertained thoroughly. I was offered the chance to read this short story in exchange for my review and am pleased that I agreed.

Great Fantasy with a Superb Ending

Even though this was shorter than the first story, it is even better than the first one. It contains lots of action and ends on such a humorous note that one can't help but like it. The first story should be read first, however, to appreciate the second.

The book reminded me of Harry Potter series with a great adventure, ventured into, unknowingly by Treslaner the main protagonist. A small tale narration of an incident where the main protagonist gets stuck in gets out of it by sheer luck.

The book is undoubtedly a gluing story of the adventure with many nail biting sequences. You can complete the book in just one sitting. The book has all the elements of a good narration where you can actually visualise the scenes occuring right in front of your eyes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the reading. A great magical reading.
