On a post-apocalyptic Earth, humans are not alone.

Joachim is a hunter. Though generations have passed since the Great Death, something has evolved in the trees beyond the giant glowing mushrooms, mutants that want to see human entrails spread along the jungle floor.

And now they've taken Joachim’s wife.

To get her back, Joachim will have to give the leader of these demons so

After the Great Death humans are now living in small hunting communities. Next to the weird glowing mushrooms people have evolved into something alien. Murderous and alien. To get his wife back, Joachim must find the Black Oracle and the ingredients for some weird immortality potion. But not before he travels to the realm of ZALM.

(This review may contain spoilers).

The blurb of this book was one that caught my attention when I originally read it. I liked the fact that it seemed to be a mix of apocalyptic and fantasy… and it definitely did live up to those expectations when I started reading it.

I could really empathise with the villagers and the awful situation they were in. I wasn’t sure exactly where and how the mutant creatures had sprung up and I would have

This was such a unique and well written book! The author had the story jumping between realms and several storylines, all of which were effortlessly combined into a fantastic read.

I found the plot of the story very interesting. It was unlike any of the reads I have read recently. I liked the alien factor and that they were the ones wanting immortality. The fact that the author threw in the travel between realms was excellent, and gave it a wee bit of a sci-fi read. I also liked that the main rea

Joachim is back from a hunt and has missed his pregnant wife, Darcie, his Mother and his village; he is glad to be back home where life is relatively simple. Just as all the other hunters are. They are happy to be back with their families and loved ones. Everything is good; that is until the creatures attack. An unwarranted attack and a breach of contract, the village is destroyed, and the demons take Darcie as prison

I enjoyed this book, although I do have a soft spot for dystopian tales. I finished it by reading casually over two days. The story was gripping and interesting throughout all of the different character perspectives and locations.

There was a good range of characters, male and female, young and old, brains and brawn etc so there was always a character or motivation that could be sympathized with. Both the setting and the characters are well-described throughout the book, and it was very easy to

The Black Oracle by Michael Cristiano is a wonderfully written piece of YA fiction with a plot that will keep readers of all ages at the edge of their seat. The post-apocolytic world Cristiano creates draws the reader in, introducing them to thrilling and original sceneries and creatures. The reader grows engrossed in the story of Joachim and his quest to save his pregnant wife from a race of human-devouring demons. The tribulations Joachim and his companions face in saving not only his wife, bu ...more

This is Michael Cristiano's debut novel which features a post-apocalytic setting with different communities and creatures roaring the world. Joachim is a hunter in his village and he must set out on an adventure through the Kingdom of Zalm once his wife is kidnapped by the creatures. Through his adventures, he meets to the Black Oracle and a back story connects different issues about the Kingdom of Zalm.

As the storyline follows Joachim and his adventure, it follows other villagers as well. Trent

THE BLACK ORACLE is a fantastic debut. Cristiano brings to life a truly unique world in genre fiction. THE BLACK ORACLE is a fun-filled, adrenaline-rush of a ride from the very beginning, with terrifying, intriguing creatures, compelling characters, an intricate plot, and phenomenal story-telling. And that ending. I basically just LOVED this book. Joachim is so easy to root for, and following him on his journey was everything. I've been reading a lot of contemporaries lately, and this was the pe ...more

Review: THE BLACK ORACLE by Michael Cristiano

Fans of epic fantasy are going to love this one, because even though its setting is post-apocalyptic [and who ever promised the After-Apocalypse wouldn't be like the Dark Ages?], there's all the great tenets of fantasy: character, setting, theme, adventures, in a well-composed framework.

I reviewed a digital ARC generously provided by Curiosity Quills Press for review and tour purpose, without remuneration.

A Jungle of Juvenile Literature

I recently received a free copy of Michael Cristiano’s post-apocalyptic fantasy entitled the Black Oracle as a prize during a recent book release party I attended. The only redeeming aspect I could conclude after this transaction once I finished reading it was that it was free.

This is a story of a group of villagers who have settled along an undisclosed coastline, beside an unidentified jungle, of an unknown continent. The book is peppered with ambiguous pronouns,

Got an ARC from Net Galley courtesy of Curiosity Quills.

Thank you.

This is a post Apocalypse book. Most of the world has been wiped out by the Great Death. Zupay is the big bad of the neighborhood. He kidnaps one of the women from the village so a couple of the hunters go out to rescue her. A deal is struck between them and Zupay.

I did enjoy this book and liked the runestone picture at the start of each chapter. It was a nice but little touc
