She has been banished from the city to a remote area and a murdered girl lands on her doorstep …

Danielle has always been 'linked' to others so when her links were cut and she was banished from the city it was a shock in more ways than one. She no longer had fast access to information, food, friends … anything. Now she will fend for herself and she is notorious for having

I found this really interesting, not because of the vampires (ugh - even if this WAS written before they became cool) but because of the fascinating futuristic setting, which was really imaginative and well-thought-out. The writing was great, particularly the descriptions of all the Outlands communities, which were so real and detailed that I felt like I was there. The plot was quite unexpected and unique; it moved along fairly slowly, but not in a bad way. I prefer a slower pace to constant bre ...more

Above average vampire novel, but it is unnecessarily crass at times. There is a cameo from Wombat, a genetically engineered Animal. (Jackie French's bio as at 2001 notes that her writing career spans 10 years and 32 wombats).

3.5 stars, and I would consider reading the rest of the trilogy.

Ahh, vampires before they were popular, by one of my two favorite childhood authors.

I lost this book after reading it once, and I dearly wish I could return to it - but it's so hard to find a copy of it now.

Australia is captured very well in this book. I wonder if Jackie French and Sean Williams have ever had coffee together...

Surprising how well this holds up, particularly if you suspend your disbelief a little bit regarding science and the internet. The fears and challenges still ring true, although possibly not as much as they did when I first read this book.

I've always loved Jackie French's books, and this vampire novel, written long before twilight, stands a head and shoulders above the rest of the genre.

While I believe it is YA, it does get quite bleak and gory, and the main character is not really a cardboard c

It was enjoyable read. I like the concept of the Forest and how the story looked into Danielle's impact on losing it. I did find the vampire / castle aspects a bit weird.

More genitals than I was expecting but otherwise a good mystery with decent world-building.

Really interesting book, its not the typical vampire stories that we see these days. A good book to read for a change. A mix of dystopia, the supernatural and a bit of romance.
