The opening chapter of Veronica Phoenix by Jim Proctor grabbed me and catapulted me into a great and glorious journey with Carl Wilkins, captain of a deep-space salvage vessel. Early on, it becomes clear that poor Carl has not yet learned the lesson that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. However, Carl is a believable character with whom I became invested almost immediately upon meeting him, and I enjoyed this book for its nail-biting adventure and Carl’s personal development as h ...more

I fully enjoyed the entire feel of this book! It was a great sci-fi adventure. The characters were really well written. Is it weird that I related best with the hologram? LOL.
The storyline was written in such a way as to give you a 360 degree experience of the world and the people in it, bad or good. You would think that kind of writing would kill the suspense, but it does the exact opposite. Jim gives you just enough of a view behind enemy lines to get the gist of what's going on and a taste o

Calling all space science fiction fans!

I would love to see this made into a movie. I felt the pulse of engines. Smell the burning ship. I could hear the screams. Exciting read!

Great book! I'm not going to spoil this one because I could say too much here. But this goes way beyond what I first though. This one did indeed keep me up reading last night and I almost came down and fired up the computer to put this review on. A man with apparently everything going for him is conned. The cost is incredible and only his interaction with a program in the old freighter, Veronica Phoenix gives him a hope in hell. Great read with a real twist at the end.

This is not my usual genre, but I loved this story. It was well written and managed the sci-fi technical elements well without being overwhelming. The plot was gripping and had me reading into the early hours of the morning. I felt for Carl throughout the book and loved his interactions with the other characters. I won’t say anything further to avoid spoilers, but it’s a great book, nice easy (but gripping) read, minimal errors, and left me feeling good. I look forward to the sequel!

If you enjoy books regarding space travel such as Firefly, then I think you've just found your next read.

Veronica Phoenix will definitely please any bookworm who favors the sci-fi genre.

There were bots, AI with holographic breasts, battle scenes, crashes, and much more.

Interested yet?

Yeah, I bet I had you at holographic breasts. :) JK

Speaking of Veronica/Billy (AI), five minutes alone with the AI and I'd be one bald momma due to

Bad judgement by Captain Benjamin Segal, ordering the space cruiser Callaway to turn and face a Xetian attack, begins the sequence of events that brings Carl Wilkins, reportedly the best salvage operator around, to sign a contract for one million credits, changing his life forever.

The characters in this book are well conceived, I especially liked Lansing and Forbes, and the story is crafted beautifully, allowing the reader to feel themselves upon the ships as they forge into space. Carl Wilkins

The novel started out fast and enjoyable, SACOM the military and police force for the galaxy, I guess, was ambushed and the entire fleet and was decimated. The captain of one of the ships was completely incompetent and made all the wrong choices during the battle. His final act as captain of his vessel was to falsify information about the status of the ship before abandoning it. Jump forward. Carl a salvage expert with a thriving business is hired by SACOM to salvage specific items from the deci ...more

One of the questions I found myself asking after completing Jim Proctor's Veronica Phoenix is “What would you do if it seemed that suddenly everything was stacked against you?”

Carl Wilkins is an unfortunate man who found himself in this very situation, and I think he was formed in such a way as to be a very sympathetic character. There's plenty of conspiracy, and most of it revolves around SACOM and the mission that Carl is selected to undertake in a space salvage operation. Carl has a reputati

Veronica Phoenix is a science fiction story with a healthy dose of some of my favorite ingredients: adventure, suspense, greed, and love.

The Protagonist, Carl, is easy to like and Proctor's development of this character was outstanding. That isn't to say he doesn't have some flaws, but don't we all?

World building in the book was simple, yet creative, and completely believable and easy to understand, and therefore very satisfying. Some sci-fi books have you lost in the minutiae and checking back

After a SACOM fleet of spaceships fend off an ambush by Xetian spaceships out beyond the asteroid belt, Carl Wilkins’ salvage team is hired by a SACOM department to head out and recover valuable pods and materials from the damaged ships at the ambush site. However, he is unaware that he is heading off with false information and a shady contract, which winds up killing four of his team and sets him up under a false conviction that closes his business and leaves him bankrupt. I had read and thoroughly Jim Proctor’s Novella ‘Made in the Stars’ and on the strength of it, got ‘Veronica Phoenix’ the first book in the ‘Phoenix series to read. I was not disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed it. The storyline was very good, as was the main character, Carl Wilkins, a successful businessman who loses everything and has to start all over again from scratch. I won’t spoil the book for potential readers by giving the plot away, but will only say that I was engrossed in it. I can t ...more
